They are shutting down tu

Welcome new fam! I had been somewhat active on TuD a number of years ago, but moved over to FUD, with occasional TuD searches for specific information. I hope you’ll agree that we have a great group of people here. So much helpful information and a caring group of members. Welcome! JessicaD (type 1 for 33 years; live in Boston; mom of 2; vegetarian; …..!)

I haven’t been as active at TuD in the last few years as I had been in the past but I’m looking forward to finding new and old friends here. One of the things that was especially useful for me was that the average age of TuD skewed older. Those of us who are retirees need a place to hang out that isn’t designed for short attention spans.

Well met. I have a newly created login on BeyondTypeX (as I prefer to call it), the name is obvious, I think the profile picture is the same as on TUD (or is it TuD, reminds me of twiist, or not.)

@Terry-minus-the-number welcome also.

Maybe. The same comments fill my mind, I shall repel them. NO: DOWN Cynical Comment, AND You. I think their engine might be ok; it’s not Discourse like FUD (or is that FuD) and TuD and it is commercial (as in Money, Money, Money), but it looks OK. YDMMV

I recognize ya there John. As good of a writer as you are, no one is gonna beat this post. It’s one of the best pieces of diabetic writing I have seen in some time. I laughed out loud when I read it. It’s really good. Really well written. I want to bring it with to the new forum. I love it.

@mohe0001 I believe that MapleSugar’s post is the reason they closed that thread. Maybe I beicoming a conspiracist, LOL

Here is a thread on how to access the TuDiabetes archive when the site goes down. I don’t want you guys to feel like your whole life is being deleted.

Sadly that was my conclusion as well.

I tend to believe otherwise. BT1 before TuD was a site for type one. There was no BT2 until after they adopted TuD. TuD was never their cup of tea, they never interfered with TuD, they never did anything with it at all. I always thought that to BT1 TuD was a redheaded stepchild. They paid the bills and handled the backend as tech support. The forum community content was always community generated, they gave no direction to TuD at all.

I don’t know why they are pulling the plug but separating T1 from T2 is not the reason, They were already separate on their Beyond Diabetes websites and have been forever, I look at this as them shedding of excess baggage.

That all makes sense. It implies that the TuD admins are independent and could, perhaps, archive the whole thing or transfer it to another host. The problem is that hosting using discourse.org itself is quite expensive, at least $20/month.

That’s only $240 a year. I don’t have any money, but I would offer to pay for that. I might get a job soon. I have a bunch of interviews lined up. There’s been a lot of hold up because they will only let me work for Medtronic, Abbott Labs, or UHG. The diabetic in me hates those companies and wishes them nothing but ill will. That means they are not a good fit. Plus, UHG only pays software engineers $2.50/hour. Other industries are coming forward now. Something shifted.

Yeah, but it’s for life, and it’s not just that. There’s no support, just hosting; there have to be admins (“staff” as Discourse seem to call them  I think you meant $25/hour, not $2.50/hour (because that’s way below minimum) and that is the real cost. On the “pro” plan, costing $100/month, there up to 5 admins (“staff”) working for free. It gets wearing after a while.

So it’s a community and it can be done; FUD has demonstrated that but I think it is really hard and I’m not sure TuD has the involvement. I’m not saying it doesn’t; I love to be proved wrong.

I don’t know who would sponsor us. I sometimes realize how the network of all these diabetes organizations connect, but over time I forget. Maybe I can put out a call. Don’t get your hopes up.

We had plenty of support early on. Not sure if that support is still there, but we don’t need it much anymore - all the challenges we had early on were addressed. I was part of the backend / dev team that built most of the behind the scenes functionality, but I had support from Discourse during it to make sure I was doing it correctly.

Now whether or not @Michel was paying for that support, you bring up a great point. lol. I don’t know! Michel didn’t tell us what stuff was costing him. He still doesn’t. :stuck_out_tongue: And he doesn’t need too – it’s greatly appreciated. But again, I stress that if something happened with Michel being able to pay, I’m fairly certain that myself and others could take care of whatever the costs are, even if that means for life. I’m in this for life because I want this to be Liam’s safe space he can learn, grow and help as he continues getting older.

Are we gonna flood FuD with users and drive their cost up?

FUD – all caps. We aren’t a clone / spin-off off from TuD even though we all (most of us co-founders) came from there. FUD = “For Unlimited Diabetics”

Can’t stress that enough…we’re all caps FUD, not “FuD”.

If FUD gets flooded with users and costs go up, we’ll deal with it…@michel will reach out to moderators, admins and co-founders to see how we want to proceed. No one in FUD need worry about the future of FUD.

How generous of Michel to keep footing the bill despite not being very active on the forum these days!

Agreed. @Michel should be put up for FUD sainthood

That is a new one for me @elver!

If we get a big input of people we may need some help on the moderation side.

We have a ton of very senior and reliable members who have gone through a good number of forum crises, so I think we’ll do OK!

I am really sorry to see TuD closing. They have been a stalwart. We have always been a bit more supportive of aggressive treatment here.

FYI I don’t post much these days but I still lurk plenty!
