The daily life of cats

Our Gilbert is the quiet one at home, but take him to the vet and he turns into Frankenstein and the Mummy rolled into one. I think animals instinctively know a trip to the vet is not going to be fun time, but Gilbert takes his distrust and reaction to the next level. I’ve considered a concierge vet visit as an alternative, no white coat or other trappings. We took both Gilbert and Sullivan in for shots and blood work two weeks ago; Sullivan didn’t like it, but took it “standing up”. Gilbert was a different story; he took the shot OK, but he drew the line at getting poked for blood work! We decided to try again later. This morning, the wife gave him a heavier dose of Gabapentin in prep for a retry. She just got; still a no go. She left Gilbert at the vet, they’ll give him a shot to sedate him to some degree and try again. We’re not a fan of this approach, but deferred to the vet. Sullivan doesn’t like that Gilbert isn’t here, neither do we. We’re thinking of no more bloodwork attempts unless Gilbert has physical signs of an issue. It’s not like we blindly follow the vet guidance; we make our own cat food (follow Dr Pierson’s recipe and its been validated by our vet with university), treat Sullivan for drippy eye and ear mites when needed. Vet just called saying all went ok and discussed potential tactics for the next time. Opinions and advice welcome…

@TomH He’s way past play all the time mode!
He likes a little arm tackling/biting before breakfast and will chase shadows at bedtime, but that’s about it. Rarely, he’ll tolerate the laser pointer, and that’s when he’s decided to protect the dining room table at all costs! (Its glass and he thinks that no one can see him being so undignified.)

Harvey has been adopted! Finally! He was a total grumpy old man, and had resting B face, but that made him so much more special. We had him for a month, and that was a bit too long. We all got very attached to each other. It was hubby’s first pet, and he’s been crying a lot today. :sob:

Awww @Mariethm, your Harvey looked like the sweetest. I had a cat, Pond, who we adopted at age two, who was a grumpy nut and was such a wonderful part of our lives for seven years. Seeing the pics that you posted made me miss him so, so much (and he died almost 20 years ago!). My older daughter is super allergic to cats so I don’t think we’ll ever be able to have another one, but I really wish that we could. Thanks for sharing him with us and thanks for facilitating a great home for him. xoxo

That’s Java. Named Java because a friend of ours was in a coffee shop and this kitty ran into the shop. He was just a little kitten. She asked if anyone wanted a cute kitty and we took him in. He’s about 6yo now, I think…. Very skittish. Whatever happened to him as a kitten before we took him in altered him for life. The name fit.
