Diabetic complication or age or both

I’ve had several incidents where my skin just came loose, leaving a wound. When I was about to board at the Charlotte airport the strap for my carryon slipped of my shoulder peeling a square inch of skin from my forearm.

Today I was taking insulin out of a cooler box when I touched my forearm to the cardboard box flap. Less damage then before only 3/8" square.

I know aging skin thins and is easily injured but this is ridiculous.

Age is definitely a factor as is medication such as prednisone. My husband has the same problem so I bought him kevlar garden sleeves to protect his arms.

Makes me wonder if this is one of those things that just needs to be accepted as the way things are, or is there some way to improve it. Maybe a good dermatologist would have ideas, or there’s always the great font of truth (the web.)

Did I hear correctly, in my head, a tone of sarcasm?

Not sarcasm, just caution. There’s truth available there, hidden in the weeds.

Even though I’ve been off prednisone for quite a while, maybe my skin has not recovered yet. I forgot about steroid induced skin thinning.

I wear leather welder’s sleeves to protect my arms fro the murder claws of my sweeties who sleep with me. Maybe I should get some more fashionable sleeves for everyday wear.

There are a couple of factors that could be at work here. You don’t mention age, but as you get older the collagen under your skin is lost, making you skin more fragile, and contributing to thinning of the skin. Another is whether you are on baby aspirin, which will cause an increase in bruising/bleeding more easily/cuts and scrapes being worse. And lastly, diabetes will cause the skin to be more fragile. I have had surgical bandages removed, along with skin - leaving a burn-like wound.

Simple bumps and knocks on my arms and legs will leave behind petechial bleeds. If Iexpose them to the sun the iron from the blood will fix in the skin - leaving a brown spot.
