RxFood App

Food is my nemesis and my joy, I love food. For maybe 2/3 of my 55 years T1D I got away with almost no management of diet. Alas in the last few years the ups and downs have been problematic. Yes I know the how’s of carb counting but after starting strict I usually slide to wild guessing.

Moving to the Tandem T:slim and Dexcom has made a huge difference in last my control, a few spans I’ve his over 70% time in range.

Still my primary doc suggested weighing my food to be carb accurate. I felt my hesitation growing.

When talking to my diabetes educator (thank you Canada health care, I get one on one review calls every 2 weeks), they suggested I try the RxFood app.

Wow it’s been so helpful- I take a photo of my meal, type in a few descriptions and it returns a carb estimate. It still might not be perfectly accurate but it’s much better than my guesses. It’s almost fun.

The other side benefit is that having to analyze the meal means I almost never do seconds.

The app also connects to the Dexcom so it shows the pattern of 4 hours after a meal.

Has anyone else used the app? Im happy with its effects since starting a few weeks ago.

I have not used it.

Is it easy?

I have used different apps before, but the problem with them has always been how long it takes to get the food entered in. Different brand names and so forth, and then the amounts, etc.

It’s much much easier, I would not still be recording if it took a lot of entry, which was my history with apps.

All you really need to do is upload a photo. I feel it helps to give general names, but I have been as vague as “shrimp tacos, guacamole “

It takes maybe 2-3 minutes to process, but is almost effortless. It’s sometimes like magic.

There is no entering of amounts, it does that likely with some AI on the photo.

@cogdog Thanks for the reference. I’ve used MyNetDiary (D edition) to carb count for a couple of years. Like you and @Eric, the failing point is the time it takes to enter data and the source of the carb data, though they’re experimenting with the picture submission like RxFood uses; time for entry vs picture seems about the same. At first, I had issue with the data sources as people are able to submit their own info to MyNetDiary (supposed to provide the nutrition label, but that’s problematic too, and the company supposedly checks it. I wonder how the carb results vary for the two apps.

RxFoods is almost no data entry, that’s what I dig. I could calibrate with food of known carbs but at this point I’m much more tracking than ever.

I barely dug in, but it does all kinds of analysis just based on the photos and when entered.

That looks helpful.

Update, I deleted it and re loaded it and got it to work!

I think it might actually require a prescription here? Maybe a Medical group paying for the ap for their patients? I went to their website and it talks about your patients using it. And when I downloaded the ap it requires you input your e-mail you registered with or in your welcome e-mail sent to you. So… it sounded easier but…

Are any of the other aps easier now?? I too do not want to enter in info. I will not bother with it if I have too!!

According to the webpage:

"I downloaded RxFood, but why am I not able to get in?

At this time, you will need to be invited or prescribed onto RxFood from your clinician. Please contact us if you would like to be referred in as a patient."

I downloaded and was able to set up. I was asked for a clinician code, but was optional. I skipped that and continued to the finish.

I did not get a prescription nor am invite from my clinic, but now I am fuzzy. I believe I just downloaded the app and it let me create an account.

No clinic code needed. I asked my clinic but they are not set up.

Also, I am not sure if me being based in Canada is an issue.

@CarlosLuis Iphone or?? Because it won’t let me get past the first page it says enter e-mail you registered with or on your welcome e-mail. It won’t leave that page, it just highlights use your e-mail. I tried putting in an e-mail just in case that worked and it didn’t either. I am in US.

iPhone in the US.

Thanks @CarlosLuis !
It let me bypass it this time. It wouldn’t leave that screen before. I had deleted it and redownloaded it so maybe that did something!

I’m beginning to think that these smart devices are making fun of us.

I never give devices that kind of power! It’s how people end up describing bad results from AI as “hallucinations”.

Apologies for any confusion here. I am sure my diabetes educator just recommended the app, they did not invite me as later when I asked about a clinic code they said they did not have one.

But… I did find an invite email to set up the app, but it says the invitation is from “Dexcom at RxFoods”— now my theory is I set up the app like some of you tried, and maybe the email came after I connected to my Dexcom app (more guessing).

I will reply to an address form RxFoods in that message and ask for clarification.

@cogdog FWIW, I found this about the Dexcom Canada and RX Food integration on the RX Food website. It seems you can get access to RX Food if you are wearing or have been prescribed a Dexcom CGM and they will somehow bill your Canadian insurance company for the RX Food service.

So I was actually able to create an account with a fake username, and I’m at the point where I either have limited functionality or I act have to link my real Dexcom account.

If I link my real Dexcom account, who pays the bill for this service? I need to go back and read the fine print in the TOS…oy!

Rx Foods wants my CGM data for the app. Then again, Dexcom doesn’t “see” my CGM data as I’m not using their app. I wonder if Tandem shares that information with Dexcom since Dexcom is an investor and I do use the Tandem app.

Time to do some reading…

Does that mean if you used a really big plate, it would think you were eating mini-bagels and underestimate the carbs?

I might actually give it a try, though I minimize the apps in my life, and I’m so used to weighing what I eat at home it never seems a nuisance.

@Beacher I like your idea of a large plate! :joy:

I got an email that I’m in a trial period and to start using the ap. I may not. I do think this is an interesting concept. I’m just not over the moon about adding another app.
