That line “on this side of the grass” is one I use too. Since 2021, I’ve been in recovery from what I call the 3C’s Covid, Cancer, and Complications -T1D being one of the Complications. As a retired senior, I got knocked out of my comfortable and quiet life, and have had to learn how to survive in my new normal. This group has been so helpful in learning to deal with and manage our common disease. The humour, inventiveness, creativity, and sharing gives hope on those dark days and helps me feel like a normal person. My husband would chime in and question that I was ever normal.
The cost of this disease is crazy! I was fortunate to have the cost of my pump covered by my provincial plan, as well as my insulin, and pump supplies once we reach our deductible. I do try to get three days from a site change, but always have used a new cartridge and infusion set. My A1C has moved closer to what my Endo recommends.
Your good A1C shows that what you do is working for you! Way to go!
I’m feel for you, Sally, I was really enjoyiing my retirement for 8 years and then the Big C (caner) intervened, I am currently on immunotherapy which has given me the itchy rash. When I was reading that one of the possible side effects was T1DM, I laughed. How would anyone know since this person with T2DM has nearly non-functioning Beta cells.
The thing is, we have this great place with great people who are not only compassionate but can offer great help.
Great news on getting better HbA1c resutls. And I pray that you are melanoma free. I get a skin survey every year because of having the wrong skin type to live in Sunny Texas. So far only actinic keratosis which get frozen off.
I hope I have been helpful telling you that I am riding in the same boat with you. We can support one another.
Oh Carlos, thanks so much! Yes, your words of encouragement and support have been much appreciated! Yesterday I saw my surgical oncologist for my 6 month follow up to blood work, CT scan and MRI. EXCELLENT REPORT- no evidence of metastatic disease! She has now put me on a 1 year recall with my agreement. I have Derm and surgical Oncologist follow up every 6 months, and of course Endocrinologist every 3 months. My husband and I would have very few outings if it weren’t for all the medical appointments. I do “allow” him a few appointments, but thank goodness, he is healthy!
I remember that itchy rash with Immunotherapy. Is that your only side effect? Maybe I can help you with your cancer journey.
So far, so good - the rash is annoying but as of yesterday’s labs, liver, kidney and thyroid function is good. Well I have Hashimoto’s so I am on Synthroid, but my levels are all normal at the same dose. White and red blood cell counts also good.
For the rash I was prescribes a steroid cream that is helpful. My wonderful oncology NP told be about an anti-itch cream Sarna and Gold Bond with menthol and a slight numbing agent. By accident I learned that ibuprofen and acetaminophen is helpful, but I am cautious about using either too often.
Oh good! Sounds like you’ve got great care and advice from your team!
They’re the best! I have no experience with others but I know of others experiences in other places,
I too have been very fortunate in the medical teams who have helped me. I also have the best Endocrinologist!
