I think people like it because it’s sweet! C’mon, have you had a Dr. Pepper? I swear that’s popular because it’s so sweet it’ll knock your teeth out!

Ha, I’m American, and I’ve never liked root beer because I think it tastes too much like spearmint (aka toothpaste), which I hate. I like peppermint and wintergreen, but spearmint is gross. And I’ve tried both mass market and craft/premium kinds. Also premium alcoholic ones (see Not Your Father’s Root Beer).
That said, I love Dr. Pepper—the diet version is great.
