From Swimming To Running; Adjusting to the Pandemic

Don’t you use a CGM? Doesn’t Libre show you your BGs in a graph for overnight? Or maybe you have to manually scan the sensor to get a reading? I know there are options to convert the Libre scan to an actual CGM. I’m sure other Libre users here on FUD would know what is needed.

yes, you must scan the Libre to get a reading. And it has a deviation of 20+ or 20- sometimes, with a 15 minute lag time. Not the best sensor, but it does give me a ballpark estimate of where I am. The Dexcom didn’t work for me AT ALL! that’s why I chose the Libre system. I still rely on finger sticks though. I will NEVER make a treatment decision based upon the Libre reading. :frowning_face:

VERY DISAPPOINTING:

so I was really excited to get out and run today with my brand new Hoka One running shoes. (they arrived last night and they are a perfect fit; phew)

also, Eric made a wonderful suggestion about a simple basal change, and I employed it and it worked out perfectly . maybe even a bit too perfectly :wink:.

It was very overcast when I left the house, and I knew that it was expected to shower today, but I didn’t expect it to happen this early in the morning. It was the same as yesterday, so I thought I would beat the downpour.

But ahhh, no such luck! I was 20 minutes out and the rain started with a light drizzle which quickly turned into a real shower. I saw some suspicious clouds looming, but the sun was just up ahead. I didn’t really know what to do, as I am wearing my test strips and my meter and lancet on my wrist, and I have no rain gear at all (and, I am wearing my brand new very $$$ Hokas which I did not want to get wet on their first day out).

decided to turn my basal back on 100% and head home. So I was only out for approximately 45 minutes. Well, thats better than nothing. But still, a real bummer.

here are my (new basal) stats:

5am BG 86
5:50am BG 86 bolused for breakfast
8:20 BG 63 took 1/2 a Gtab
9:30 BG 75 turned basal down to 85%
10:15 BG 82 ate 3 Wheat Thins and left the house
10:40 BG 70 (I had felt hypo) Started to rain, took 1 Gtab, turned by basal back up to 100% and turned around and headed home :cry:
11:30 BG 70 (took 1 Gtab)

So I was only on a lowered TB for 1 hour today. I am certain I will not see any spikes or anything out of the ordinary. But I am very curious to see how my BGs react to 2 days of back to back exercise and then today, a day of sloth.

Tomorrow is expected to rain as well so I will have to play this all by ear. I am going to need a “rain plan,” bc obviously this will not be an isolated incident. Rain is inevitable. (I had previously ordered a runners rain jacket from NIKE, but found it very restricting and uncomfortable so I returned it.)

What a difference the right running shoes make!!! OMG. These shoes are very supportive and very cushiony and soooo comfortable. I’m a happy customer.

today was the hottest day ever, with temperatures over 90 degrees and 65% humidity. It was muggy and felt like a potential death trap :crazy_face: :sweat: But I was out there doing my thing and very very happy to be testing out these new running shoes.

I had had one on the best nights sleep I have had in a while, and because yesterday was a rest day, I felt particularly strong and comfortable. A nice perk!

here are today’s stats:

8:15am BG 73
9am BG 100 (started climbing)
9:30 BG 115 turned down basal to 85% TB
10am BG 123 ran out the door and hit the road.
10:45 BG 96 took 1 Gtab
11:15 BG 100 turned OFF TB
11:30 BG 82 took 1 Gtab
12pm BG 81 bolused 4.2 units for refuel and drank 48oz water.

I hope that I can get out tomorrow, but it is expected to be torrential out with lightening showers. We’ll c what happens. Saturday and Sunday look promising, though.

How was your run today? This heat definitely doesn’t make things any easier! (I can say this bc we live near one another :wink: and I know that today was almost unbearable!)

It was indeed hot, and sunny! I did a new route today, very hilly, and a few places were especially sunny. I wilt in the sun, so I try to avoid it by staying on trails with trees! I know that option is available to you along the river but maybe at Prospect Park?? Overall I enjoyed the run, not too buggy. I stayed in range, too, no low, no high, only had 18g carbs (a Muir raspberry gel) about 20 minutes into the run which spiked me to BG 108. I took 0.25U about 50 mins after the gel with BG 86 and trending up. I should have taken it sooner to prevent the spike, but 108 is acceptable! ZB for the first hour or so, and then switched to 0.3U/hr. Started run with BG 71 and ended run with BG 91. No spike post run either!!! YAY!! I had a “DM” (DaisyMae) run!!! :wink:

I see you mentioned potential rain for Friday. I was really hoping to run tomorrow! :cloud_with_lightning_and_rain: Strange weather these past few weeks, lots of thunderstorms!

AND OVERDOSE OF GTABS OUT OF PANIC:

Oh my goodness. I was doing so well. I was not even a diabetic during my run :wink: today…until my BG dropped to 51 and in a panic I over corrected the low with one too many Gtabs. And, of course, I spiked, bringing me back into that familiar diabetic BG range ( but that only lasted 15 minutes.) Oh well, live and learn!! Maybe my instincts were right after all.

I did a lot of running today, which is probably why my BGs dropped so low. I was glad at least that I had even stopped to test, bc I wasn’t feeling the hypos at all.

it was over 90 degrees out by 10am, and the humidity was high as well. I was absolutely soaking wet throughout most of the run and afterwards I was dripping. I felt really good though; nice and well rested, stress free, and thrilled to be running in my new Hoka shoes. I must have drank gallons of water along the run bc I kept having to fill up my water bottle at every pitstop. and, of course, once I walked back into my front door, I went immediately to the fridge for some wonderfully ice-cold water (48oz) and then bloused for the refuel.

here are todays stats:

9am BG 84
9:30 BG 86 turned down basal to 90%
10am BG 86 took 2 Gtabs and left the house
10:45 BG 100 took 1 Gtab
11:15 BG 98 took 1 Gtab
11:30 turned off TB
11:45 BG 51 took 3 Gtabs and took the short route home (feeling a little wobbly)
12:15 BG 118 bolused 4.2 units for 32gms of refuel
12:30 BG 98 drinking shakes followed by more water :yum: :joy:

very satisfied with the run. hoping that tomorrows thundershowers come later in the day so I can get out there early and avoid getting soaked.

Could the 11:45 BG 51 be wrong?? That is a 50+ point change in half an hour, but pre and post BG 51! It could happen, I surely know, but just wondering! :thinking:

Maybe I should have done another finger stick to make certain, as I had just taken a Gtab (4gm glucose) a 1/2 hr before. But even though I spiked to 118, within 15 minutes my BG came back down to 98.

I just tested 15 minutes ago and my BG was 79 and dropping. I had some fast carbs and some Pringles potato chips (love the salty ones after a workout).

I have been doing the “water test,” and so far I havent spiked with less water, in fact I am trending low. I think that this is due to too much insulin bolus for my 2 shakes post run. Tomorrow I will take less insulin and see what happens. Also, I am considering lowering my basal this afternoon/early evening by .025 units/hr (just a modest TB) so there is no crashing.But I havent decided yet. ANY THOUGHTS? It’s already a little after 3pm, so I don’t know whether I should just continue taking more glucose or lower my basal.

I sometimes get false lows if my fingers are sweaty and the blood gets diluted with sweat!

Well my fingers were definitely sweaty!!! I try drying them on my shirt, but my shirts just as sweaty (despite the fact that its supposed to wick the moisture away). I have really nothing to wipe my fingers on…well, tomorrow I will try wiping them on the wristband which is cotton and probably less sweaty.

Get a washcloth and cut it in half. Safety-pin a half of a washcloth to your SPIBelt.

Anything you are wearing will get wet. If you have the washcloth hanging free and not in a pocket, it will stay dryer that way.

I usually trend low in the afternoon myself. For me, it is probably too much basal but I don’t bother to lower my basal rate. I know I should, but I let Loop suspend my basal instead. I think if you have consistent low trend in the afternoon/early evening (as I do), it is reasonable to lower your basal rate. You may need to lower it more than 0.025. I’m not sure my body would even register that small amount. OmniPod only supports increments of 0.05 though.

I am super insulin sensitive, and when I was swimming this is all I needed to reduce my basal after my swims. It worked perfectly, so I am figuring it might be a good starting off point. But even when I am not active, I trend low in the late afternoons and early evenings, so I might consider just lowering my basals for that period of time on my regular “profile.”
