Trolls!

No, not the bad internet kind!
Headed up to Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay. Visited some forest trolls, the Guardians of the Seeds, done by Thomas Dambo. Really amazing installation.
A few pics. Hubby got better ones, but gotta wait until he sends them.

Awww darn – I am sorry to have missed you! Please let me know when you return – we are here frequently! So glad you enjoyed the trolls – they’re incredible and so well placed within the landscape. CMBG is one of my favorite places around :grinning: (PS: I love your photos!)

@JessicaD A friend’s family booked a house in BBH for next week, not realizing that most everything is closed, including the Botanical Gardens! (We had raved so much about the trolls). Do you know of anything around there that might be open for fun touristy or sightseeing stuff? I figure they’re SOL, but doesn’t hurt to ask…

That is so disappointing, BUT BBH is wonderful any time of the year!

  • First, we have a “land trust” with incredible properties (just wear waterproof hiking boots if possible – it will probably be muddy). Trails/areas I love: Oven’s Mouth, Porter, and Oak Point. I would also head out to Hendricks Head BEACH (NOT the land trust trail) and have a picnic sourced from the Southport General Store – it’s a gorgeous beach.
  • Head to Damariscotta for a day trip – it’s a fun town with lots of little shops that tend to be open less seasonally than BBH (i.e., they’ll be open now!). See if anyone is running oyster boat/river tours yet-- they are interesting and a great look at the land from the water.
  • From Damariscotta you could go out to Popham Beach, which is incredibly beautiful in itself, but Cedar Grove Sauna has been out there all winter – you can book sauna time and cold plunge in the ocean and warm up in the sauna!
  • They can also run up to Camden and Rockport, which are such picturesque and nice little towns – well worth the drive. There is a place that sells pie on the way – Moody’s Diner – that is worth a stop! It’s in Waldoboro.
  • From BBH I think the Novelty, which is the Squirrel Island ferry, should be running now. They could take it out to Squirrel, walk around, and come back or even just take the boat out and back. It’s fun to be on a boat. If the Monhegan ferry is running I would definitely go out to Monhegan for a day, but it doesn’t look like it runs from BBH until May. They could also ask Balmy Days (which runs all of the tour boats) if they can charter someone to take them out for the afternoon. It’s special to see the peninsula from the water.
  • Eating – there are lots of good options that should be open! Farm 52 for pastries, Boathouse for lunch or dinner, Thistle Inn for drinks at the bar + wonderful dinner. The brewery out of town a little bit (on the road heading into town) has excellent food. There’s a sandwich shop on the main street that has a “secret” back room tavern that is really fun (ask around to find out their winter schedule).
  • I can’t believe CMBG is closed! Waaahhhh! They’ll have to come back in the spring/summer!

I hope they still have a wonderful time! Let me know if they have any questions xoxo

I almost forgot my favorite spot in town (but well outside of town): Ocean Point. Drive to my friend Lizzy’s East Boothbay General Store and pick up sandwiches, chips, and definitely cookies, and have a picnic on the rocks. (Drive past the beach and around the point.) They’ll observe all sorts of vessels headed to sea, but also seals and possibly dolphins if they’re lucky!

@JessicaD Thank you for the recommendations!
I’ll pass those along, and make a list for us as well! Next time we will make sure we don’t arrive at the height of Windjammer Days!
