I am a senior now but was diagnosed when I was 4. I am really thankful that we are able to check our blood at home now but the thing I’m most thankful for are my great parents. Everything was just an everyday part of life like brushing your teeth.
Nothing diabetes wise has ever made the headlines in my life story except as an aside to the story. The other week I was at my son’s and had a hypoglycemic event so came inside for juice and sit down for a bit. My 4 year old grand came in and complained. My son says granny has to sit still for 20 minutes. She marches over, gets her visual timer and asks dad to put it on. She takes one look at it, marches over to me, lifts my top, points to my pod and says she is getting her medicine so is fine and can play! Roars of laughter throughout the house.
So yes your kids will have things you cringe at but any of those are really just brushing their teeth when they don’t want to.
Great parents rule!

Thank you for a great story. Kid just cut to the chase when there’s fun to be had.

Children are wonderful and very adaptive. My children always knew I needed MDI for many years, and that never phased them. (Although one morning my husband gave me my insulin in the arm, which was no big deal. However, my kindergarten-aged daughter went to school that day and told her teacher that “my daddy shot my mom this morning.” Thankfully, as the teacher was on the way to the head office to call the police, another teacher – who knew I was diabetic – explained the situation before the authorities were involved!)
