From Swimming To Running; Adjusting to the Pandemic

@daisymae Schitts Creek is one of my all time favorite shows!! I am always jealous of people who haven’t watched it yet b/c they get the joy of seeing it for the first time! I really don’t watch much and only take recommendations from trusted advisors (!!), so trust me when I say: Ted Lasso is a show that I think you would LOVE if you liked Schitt’s Creek! It’s on Apple+ TV, which is sort of random, but honestly I would pay for the subscription only to watch Ted Lasso. The second season comes out tomorrow, I think. It’s that good!

Do you like to listen to audiobooks or podcasts? Do you think you’ll be up for that type of listening as you recuperate? I’ve started listening to podcasts as I’ve driven between Boston and midcoast Maine way too many times this year and have a list of favorites there, too!

GETTING READY, my mental breakdown:

I’m not a drinker, but yesterday sure made me reconsider this. I could have easily downed an entire quart of either Tequila or Whisky all to myself…take your pick. (I’ve tried both, cared for neither of them, so it is a bit of an irony why I felt like drinking either of these 2 liquors .)

As I am already stressed out enough, I thought I would take yesterday off and do NOTHING but rest. I dozed comfortably on the couch right after breakfast…but then the phone began to ring…Schedualing pre-op didnt seem like such a big deal last week; blood work and an EKG. But then it turned into more, especially bc I would need more than just those tests and they were all in COMPLTELY different locations in Manhattan on the same exact day.(Do you have any idea how difficult it is to get parking in the City??)

I also was emailed a surgical consent form (they couldn’t have done this in their office??) which was about 10 pages long, that I had to read and sign. There were a lot of frightening things I had to read about, especially all the potential things that could go wrong, ranging from DEATH to PARALYSIS. egads. so on Monday, I must go for a full Cardio exam , then off to the surgeon’s office to drop off the consent form, then all the way up to the hospital to get a CoVid test. Scheduling all of this and trying my best to coordinate all of the appointment times was a truly aggravating experience. I just wanted to scream and cry (which I did over the phone bc my husband was away for the day and I had no one to lean on.) I put myself in such a tizzy that my BGs spiked up to 140!!! (yes they came down later, but only after taking 2 1mgs of Klonopin, a SOMA, and a Percocet (I was thoroughly stoned by the time I finally hung up the phone and plunked back down in front of the TV…no Whisky or Tequila in the house   :grimacing:)

Maybe this doesn’t seem a lot to have warranted all of my insanity to you, but with less than a week before my surgery (and right after that miserable colonoscopy) I was a complete basket case. Just too overwhelmed and bombarded at once.

Anyway, I thankfully see my psychiatrist today to really let it all out, and get some shock treatment (for my schizophrenia; which, btw, is a type of miracle cure), and he will do an extra “zapping” targeting the area of my brain where all the craziness comes from and this will dramatically calm me down.

(TRYING, I am sorry that we won’t b meeting up today in Bronxville, but I do hope you understand!!! I promise that we will see each other soon  :hearts:)

SO that was my day of the crazies. Hoping Monday will go smoothly and all I will have left to do is to show up for my surgery on Wednesday.

OMG, sounds like a full time job just organizing all of the Dr appts, much less actually going to them all over the city! I so feel for you with all of the frustration and exhaustion this entails! Good luck at your Dr appt today and I hope you feel much better and a bit relaxed afterwards. :crossed_fingers:

So looking forward to seeing you in Bronxville or elsewhere in the city, whenever you feel up for it!! :heartpulse:

Try to relax, maybe even with a bit of Tequilla or better yet, a bit of brandy, and enjoy the weekend!! :hugs:

I’m praying for you, @daisymae, and sending lots and lots of hugs. I wish you had an easier path but I’m so glad for your example of courage and honesty throughout your challenges. We’d all do well to display your strength!

RETURNING TO MDI AFTER ALMOST 25 YRS OF PUMPING:

Well, after a very LONG talk with our beloved and wise Eric, I began my Levemir/NovoLog experiment this morning. We discussed it at length last night. He is, as almost EVERYONE knows, the most kindhearted, patient, and knowledgable (I could continue adding acclamations, but I’ll spare you for the time being ) I know for all things related to D, and then many other “life” things as well. This is the very first time I am doing this the “old fashioned way” since pumping, and, I havent a clue what I am doing. But Eric set out a plan for me that seemed reasonable and appropriate and manageable.

He encouraged me to begin switching over to the MDI BEFORE the day of my surgery as a kind of “Fire Drill” (You dont wait until your home is on fire to figure out what to do to be safe.) Makes all the sense in the world to me!

So I will b doing split doses of the Levemir; 6 units at 8am and 6 units at 8pm. Then I will bolus with a NovoLog Pen based upon my (detached) pumps WIZARD suggestions. So far so good, but am trending low so I just popped a Gtab to stay above 100. I truly dont know what to expect. And I am frightened. But I figure it will be just like when I began swimming; I didnt know what to do then when I began, and I just kept plugging away at it till I found a decent solution. One day at a time, one hour at a time with carefully finger stick monitoring.

I woke up with a BG of 100, I detached my pump at 8am and gave myself the 6 units basal. By 10:30, my BG had risen to 144. I bolused for breakfast, and now, at 1pm, my BG has come down to 88. I actually took a Gtab (which I would otherwise never consider doing at such a wonderful BG) But I was concerned of going low in the middle of a hectic day with errands to run.

I am treating myself to my famous food love of a double decker grilled cheese sandwich for a late lunch/early dinner at around 4pm-ish. This has always required a dual bolus of a 40/60 split over 2.5 hours, giving me 6.5 hours of active insulin. How I will manage this without my pump is an “I dont have a hell of a clue what I am doing” experiment. Eric suggested letting my pump show me how much insulin to bolus for upfront, and then wait about an hour to give myself a second bolus of the remainder of my insulin. (Do others have experience with this that has worked for them???) I would appreciate ALL suggestions, trials and errors, etc

I am thinking of trying out giving myself just a little insulin up front, followed by the remainder about 1- 1.5 hours later. I was considering doing a 50/50% split just bc its easier on my very ignorant math skills, but I am afraid of going low from too much upfront bolus. Any suggestions here? I will be bolusing at around 4pm, so if anyone is reading this beforehand, and wants to shoot me a quick suggestion, I would be extraordinarily grateful!!!

And of course, as usual, I will keep you posted and let you know how all of this plays out. And, one last thing I just remembered: Eric and some of the other wonderful people here have told me (more than once) Dont worry, bc if I dont get it just right today, I will still b D tomorrow and can try it all over again    :+1:

Sorry for the additional stress. I’m hoping things slow down and you can get some time to relax prior to your surgery. Keeping you in my prayers.

Here is how to do your grilled cheese 40/60% extended bolus with injections. There are easier ways to do this, like with less injections. But if you want to do it as close as possible with a pen, this is how it would break down.

If you are eating 65 grams, and using your 1:14 ICR, do this:

  • 2.0 units when you start eating

  • 0.5 units every 30 minutes, 5 times total. The first 1/2 unit is done 30 minutes after you start, and the 5th and last one is done 2.5 hours after you ate.

As an example, suppose you are eating at 6pm. It would be done like this:

  • 6:00pm - 2.0 units
  • 6:30pm - 0.5 units
  • 7:00pm - 0.5 units
  • 7:30pm - 0.5 units
  • 8:00pm - 0.5 units
  • 8:30pm - 0.5 units

whelp, its only 7:15pm and my BG just spiked to over 212 (they started at 87 at 4:30 before eating.) I sure am not so skilled at managing this dual bolus stuff (yet). ButI’ll tell you one thing, its AMAZING to not be attached to my pump. NEVER EVER thought I would be saying that!!! Not in a million.

OH THE MISERY:

Last evening turned out to b a f-ing sh*t show. My BGs spiked, then spiked some more, and more and more and more. I couldn’t have overdosed on insulin if I even tried. I was taking endless amounts of insulin and couldn’t get my BG down from almost 300. But, by the time I went to bed (11pm) my BG had finally come down enough (160) and I slept like a dead person (I was really worn out!!! A gross understatement)

I woke up at 6am and my BG was 56. I took 2 Gtabs and went bk to sleep. When I woke up at 7:45 my BG had climbed to 145. And then, within minutes, I climbed to 200. I took my Levemir and an IM correction of 1.5 units (which REALLY should have done it), but after an hour and a half I had only come down to 170. I won’t b testing again till 10:30 when I bolus for my breakfast…but I will keep you posted on how this day progresses. (These crazy BGs are worse and more difficult to manage than when I was on the pump and having all of those miserable steroidal epidurals!!!)

Egads. :grimacing:  :sleepy: :broken_heart:

Sorry, @daisymae! I dealt with the exact same type of fight yesterday and today. I was ugly crying by lunch today with all of the whiplash.

Yesterday was a full moon. I’m blaming that. (I see you rolling your eyes at that comment, @Eric!) :grimacing::blush:

Hang in there. We’re all rooting for you!

The only reason I am rolling my eyes is because the full moon was not yesterday, it was Friday. :grinning:

I am only a partial werewolf now.

Where are you getting your moon info from?

NASA.

The moon is full at different times in different locations around the globe. Like in the UK, it was July 24th at 3:36am.

But in the U.S., it was July 23rd at 10:37pm Eastern.
