From Swimming To Running; Adjusting to the Pandemic

@daisymae I’m happy that possibly relief is in sight for you, and know that you have the fortitude to endure what will ensue. I’m also confident that you will make a full recovery, quickly.

Surgery is like a nap for superheroes. You take a nap while you get fixed up. When you wake up, you’re more powerful than ever, especially you @daisymae !

Do you need anything pre-op that we can help with? If any unexpected needs arise post-op, please do let us know.

Anytime Ms @daisymae . While I have never had the pleasure of meeting you in person, on FUD we are all brothers and sisters of the D. The offer still stands.

Goodness, @daisymae , I haven’t been keeping up with this thread, but now see how much you have been going through during the pandemic. I am very happy you have found a surgeon you like and hope you have a relatively speedy recovery. A friend just had surgery for a labrum tear (different obviously, but also an orthopedic surgery). Recovery is slow going but he’s feeling much better.

Hey Tia, just an FYI, I also have a Cabral tear in my right hip, as well as many osteophytes in the joint, but I am leaving them alone for the time being. It was suggested to me that I tore the Labral from my swimming stroke (breast stroke with whip kick). Now my doctor doesn’t want me to do that stroke anymore, just freestyle. Ugh. I am HORRIBLE at Freestyle!!!

I hope your friend has an easy recovery!

Today became official: Surgery scheduled for next Wednesday the 28th of July. A total reconstruction of my spine.

This will be interesting to report to everyone on FUD, especially anyone who will be going through any kind of surgery. My surgery will be 6+ hours long with about 2 more hours in recovery post-op. I do not know yet whether I will even be able to wear my pump. Furthermore, I do not know if I will be able to wear my pump for the first 2-3 weeks after surgery bc I will b wearing a back brace which prohibits me from bending, twisting, turning, or reaching. So, I am just waiting for my endo to get back to me with a plan for my return to MDI (which I have not used in over 20 yrs and am a total loss over).

My basal rates and my ICRs are sooooo widely varied, I dont know how on earth I will begin to attempt to manage my D care during this time. BUT, a saving grace: Mt. Sinai Hospital is wear my endo works and they have a stellar endo dept. SO I hope and pray that I will be in excellent hands.

I am guessing, just from reading everyones posts on Long Acting Basal Insulin that some people prefer splitting their doses. I have a sneaking feeling that that is what I will have to do, and then use my NovoLog for my boluses. (and I will have to learn how to do that all over again, just like when I was a child. Egaaads!!! )

Today I had my 10 yr colonoscopy/endoscopy. The prep was a nightmare. I won’t begin to even go into that. Lets just say that It was successful, and that I am healthy and that my D gastroparesis is well managed. My BGs are soooo wonky. Keep going low low low. Drank an entire quart of Apple Juice yesterday just to keep my BGs over 70 (all the while on a 70% TB!). When I woke up from the anesthesia, my BG was 245!!! Now I am bk on track, but still recovering. God has certainly been challenging me this past year and a half! :grimacing: :upside_down_face:  :mask:

Thank you ALL for your wealth of support. I dont think you can begin to imagine how much it means to me to have this magnificent and beneficent community behind me. :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: You have all kept me going when I didnt believe in myself, when I didnt think I would or could get through this, and you continue to outdo yourselves daily!

Wow, @daisymae, they really scheduled you fast!!! I’m so glad. Are you going to NYU-Langone in Manhattan on 17th? They are great. Will your husband take you? Will he be able to enter the hospital to give you moral support, as well as wait with you during recovery. I hope so as I know he will be anxious to see you.

Surgery is long, but hopefully you’ll be napping the whole time, and I dearly hope you can wear your pump, but at a reduced basal. I hope they will be able to monitor your BG, too, while undergoing surgery. I also use Mount Sinai, but just for my annual physicals and really like the Drs there.

DM, please let me know if you need anything or I can help with anything. I’m just a short train ride away! Text me if you need anything! :hugs: :heartpulse:

It is so so good to hear that all of the pieces are falling into place and that you’ll have surgery in one week! It seems completely fair to be frightened. I certainly would be. This is a big deal and an enormous recovery. It absolutely sucks to have to be going through. But it also sounds like you’ll be on the road to recovery quickly, and knowing you you’ll be making progress as soon as you can. It sounds like this is exactly what you need to do to continue living your life.

You have such an avid fan club here … please do say the word on anything that can be done to help! I don’t know if TV show recommendations would be helpful (I am terrible about actually watching television, but keep a list of shows that are highly recommended!) – I am happy to send through the list that I keep!

So happy that you have a plan in place and that you’re able to be hopeful - xoxo - Jessica

My Surgery will be done at Mt Sinai Hospital on 5th Avenue and 101 Street in Manhattan. There are many reasons why this is great: 1st off, it is an exceptional hospital, and my surgeon has his own private medical staff that will be assigned to me. 2nd, this is where my endo is and Mt Sinai has one of the best endo departments in the country (so my D will b in excellent hands!!! And they are all on board with my endo already.)

AND YES, OF COURSE MY HUSBAND WILL B WITH ME!!! (but they only allow one person in with you at a time bc of COVID restrictions, so my mom, family and friends won’t b permitted to visit so long as my husband is there. I am assuming that they will take some shifts, though.

I have become obsessed with Schitts Creek lately. My husband and I have already watched 5 seasons without moving our butts off the couch  It is absolutely hysterical, well written, acted, and produced.

laughter has worked miracles that my Percocet has not been able to completely fulfill  I recommend this to everyone!!!

How do you watch that? Like do you use Netflix or something? Do you need membership to do it?

Its on Netflix and you do need a membership to get access to Netflix. but it is well worth it!!! I am a very satisfied customer. (Plus, there is sooo much more to see on Netflix that you will never run out of great shows, movies, documentaries, etc, to watch.)

We’ve been watching Heartland on Netflix … well, it’s the second time we’re watching the series!

We’ve also enjoyed the shows The Crown, The English Game, Bridgerton, Virgin River, The Queen’s Gambit,… so many great shows/series!

@Eric we have a Netflix membership; we pay a monthly fee and can watch as many shows as we’d like. In the very early days we had a DVD plan and a standard HD plan. The DVD plan we had gave us 3 DVDs at a time, but when the prices went up and we found we weren’t watching as many as we did originally … that, and there weren’t as many to select from anymore, we went to the straight HD plan. We also will buy movies from amazon prime and a few other services. We only watch television from about 8-10 at night, but it’s enough for us!

Edited to add @daisymae, we’re going to have to check out Schitts Creek! Thanks for the recommendation
