Saw a pharma rep learn that one the hard way when they told a DO customer they weren’t a “real” doctor. It was priceless. Also, this rep didn’t stay around very long.
One of my girlfriends is a retired nurse. She wasn’t even properly informed, despite her years working in her profession. She told me that a DO was merely a glorified chiropractor. This confused me to no end bc I couldn’t understand how this type of doctor could actually prescribe something like Percocet.
Yes, this is not an uncommon perception because in addition to all of the medical school topics, DO’s do have to learn some chiropractic techniques. And of course some MD’s love to be “better” than someone else. In practice they are the same. Best surgeon I ever met was a DO.
Thanks for the great info and encouragement!
HOPING TO AVOID SURGERY:
so I got my MRI results back yesterday, and they they revealed a multitude of different problems with my hip. But nothing that was so drastic, but rather info that explained why I am in so much pain.
I am now considering having the cortisol injections in my hip. I have been in touch with my endo and he believes that we can make a plan for raising my basal and ICRs to accommodate the potential spike from the steroids. And, apparently, they don’t stay in your system for more than 72 hours, so it shouldn’t be so bad. I have also spoken with others who have had the injections and they have, across the board, claimed that they got almost instant relief from the time they were injected. Instant relief sounds pretty darn good to me.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the cortisol gives you instant relief. Good luck getting an appt SOON!!!
Get the shot, DM!
BG stuff is easy when you know ahead of time. You will increase your basal, make your IC stronger. Nothing you can’t handle.
That’s me, nothing I cant handle!
Keeping everyone posted as promised, I found a specialist in pain management through my DO at NYU Hospital. I was able to get an appointment for next week. Yahoo. I no longer have to wait until the end of October to see a doctor for this.
I’m gonna go for the cortisol injection.

Yes, get the shot.
Our daughter recently had a disc bulge (lower lumbar area) and was in so much pain she could not talk, just cry. The ER gave her some pain/muscle meds and sent her on her way. I sent her to the family doc a few days later, after she wasn’t feeling better. They changed the pain med, to something lower strength, and gave her oral prednisone. She had relief within a day.
Take the shot
UPDATE:
well today I had my appointment with the hip pain management specialist and was expecting to get my injection of Zilretta.
At 8am the doctor phoned me (just hours before my scheduled appt time, despite the fact that I made the appt 2 months ago and have been calling him every day for the past two weeks) just to let me know that he was unfamiliar with the drug and would not even be able to perform any kind of injection today. He would need to assess me first, and there was no room on his schedule to give me the injection anyhow. I cancelled the appt on the spot, after, of course, giving him a lg piece of my mind and in no uncertain terms letting him know how delinquent and irresponsible his behavior was, and how it certainly did not instill one iota of confidence in me. what an unprofessional A-Hole.
So I moved onward. I contacted my DO specialist and let him know what had happened and that I still was on the schedule to receive an injection with another specialist on Oct. 13th (a little over 2 weeks away, egads ). I needed him to pursue contacting her on my behalf, bc these doctors don’t seem to return phone calls, only reply to emails via a system called MyChart. He said that he would, and throughout the day he has been updating me and begging me to “hang in there.” (well what else am I supposed to do?)
SO, I contacted my cousin, the Radiologist, and spoke with another cousin who had had tremendous success with a surgeon at HSS, and I was referred to HSS. I called. They were absolutely lovely and respectful over the phone. Within 1/2 hour, I had my MRI and my Xray and their reports emailed over to this surgeons office, where they will evaluate them and let me know how I should proceed. Basically, what I am learning is that for what I am dx with, the injection is just a bandaid, whereas the surgery is a lifetime repair. They do orthoscopic surgery now, so u are in and out the same day, recoup for a little and then go right out for PT, and within months are as good as new.
Please pray for me. This has been an ordeal I do not wish on anyone however horrid they may be. I am positively at my wits end here. I wanted to cry and cry all day long. I was able to limp my way over to my favorite diner, though for a late lunch, and ,deservedly, enjoy a trippled decker 4 slices grueyer grilled cheese on thick seeded Rye with grilled tomatoes. It almost fixed everything. I smiled at my husband for the first time in quite a bit. Then he bought me 2 dozen red roses. Isn’t he a dream

Wow. I shouldn’t be, but I shocked by the doctors lack of … decency.
I’m glad you were able to find someone else who can help!
You’ve got my prayers!
Prayers, good thoughts, rainbows and unicorns on the way!
Wow, you have been through a lot with this. Thank goodness you are a strong person and persevere! You are indeed due for some good news and results and I pray your appt goes well and surgery if needed goes well. I am so looking forward to hearing that you are pain free and back to doing your daily activity!!
I am glad you are considering the surgery! That really is the best way to go!
I just hope that I am a candidate for the surgery. I should find out soon…maybe as soon as next week.
Sometimes they do things like analyze - “Well, has she tried other therapy first, before trying surgery?”
So if it comes up, make sure you emphasize that you have tried physical therapy and have been on medication for the pain for several months…
DM, I am so sorry you are going through all of this. Hoping that you have a calm weekend with as little pain as possible and appointments next week that start the path that leads you out of this. It sounds like you are being a strong, smart, tough advocate for yourself, of course which is what we all need to be… but it is exhausting. Sending a hug - Jessica
DM,
You’re such a trooper, hang in there and persevere! Sending healing prayers and positive vibes for good measure.
Lisa
JUST ANOTHER UPDATE:
so I found a phenomenal MD (surgeon) at HSS and he reviewed my radiology reports. He felt very strongly that I am NOT a candidate for surgery as my condition doesn’t warrant it at this point. He felt that the Cortisone injection is the best way for me to proceed and refereed me to someone else at HSS who does these.
So sick and tired with all of the rigamarole that I am keeping my appointment with the very first DO that I was refered to by the Initial dx DO that I saw who I trusted and liked. I am scheduled to see her on next Tuesday the 13th of October. I hope that I will be able to receive the injection then and there and not have to be assessed (again) and then have to make another appointment to come bk for the shot.
Also, another update: NO ONE I have spoken with seems to have heard of ZILRETTA. (Maybe bc its a relatively new drug) but EVERY doctor I have spoken with is aware that I am a T1D and that I must proceed with caution. My Endo is also on board and is behind me 100% so I feel very comfortable and safe knowing that there are plans in place for any reaction to the steroid.
As Eric has pointed out to me, insulin is always an answer to high BGs.
(this conversation came up bc one of the doctors I spoke with told me that if my sugars went up to 300, I should go to the nearest ER immediately. HA! what a moron! Clearly that doctor has NEVER visited us on FUD!)
