From Swimming To Running; Adjusting to the Pandemic

thank you so much. I am grateful if my posts can help even just one person know that they can have obstacles and still live UNLIMITED with D.

(that is what had brought me to FUD in the first place, and that is what has continued to keep me coming back. Unbelievable 24/7 support, shared knowledge and encouragement…and so much more!)

JUST FINISHED WITH RHEUMATOLOGIST APPOINTMENT:

So, I was with my specialist for over an hour and a half! Oh my. He strongly believes that the problem I am having is a deterioration in my hip/groin called a Laboral Tear, and that that is what is causing such extreme pain.

The next step:

Another Xray (bc my insurance will not cover an MRI without one) which will show the soft tissue in the area. The MRI will be more specific and show the bones and muscles.

Discontinue PT as it is causing more harm than good.
Discontinue Ibuprofen (and Meloxicam) but continue with Robaxan (muscle relaxer) as neither of these are producing helpful results and are causing potential damage to my stomach.
Continue icing the area 4 times daily for 20 minutes a session
Begin taking Percocet for the pain as necessary until we get this all sorted out.
Possible need for Cortisone injection in between hip joints ( this I dread bc of the problems it causes D BGs and D management.)
Possible need for surgery ( this I also dread) :weary: :sob: :grimacing:

I am trying to keep my spirits up and t live in the moment without projecting negatively into the future…however, living in the moment comes with substantial pain.

SO, now I am definitely having that super duper grilled cheese sandwich this afternoon!!! I totally deserve it. :yum:

Oh, I am so sorry DM. I thought the PT was helping. Yes, I agree, try not to project any negatively into the future. Proceed with the next steps and do your best to stay positive despite the pain. I’m hoping the muscle relaxer will help with the painful area but it probably takes more time.

Yes, enjoy that grilled cheese sandwich and yes, you deserve it! :sandwich: :hugs:

You made the sandwich taste so good, tonight I bought tomatoes and plan to make us grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato this weekend!!

I’m sending you lots of hugs, good thoughts, and prayers that everything works out for you and you don’t need surgery or cortisone, but they find a solution which helps! Hang in there!

A SIMPLE UPDATE:

so the pain is excruciating. I am living with icepacks straped around my back and hip area, so much so that I am actually sleeping with one under the right side of my hip and but! The Percocet does take the edge off the pain, but its the ice packs that are really relieving the most of it. So, basically, I have become an ice pack addict .

This coming Thursday I will have my X-ray. I am hoping that it will reveal something helpful, but the doctor believes that it is only a gateway to the MRI, which he believes will be more telling.

My blood sugars have been unsurprisingly wacky during this time. I have only needed 85% basal from the later part of the evening through my overnight. But as soon as 11am comes rolling along, I must go back to 100% basal. This confuses the crap out of me. Maybe someone, like Eric, will have an answer to why this is. I am totally out of my league here. I have been trying to keep my BGs in target range, but it has been a true challenge.

EDIT: just did a finger stick and for whatever reason, I did not need to turn off my TB today. Go figure ??? :upside_down_face:

Good luck getting some revealing results tomorrow in the x-ray. I hope it is helpful in getting approved for an MRI. AND I’m glad the Percocet is helping with the pain. Can’t wait 'til you feel better on your own though!! :heartpulse:

LATEST UPDATE:

had my X-ray this morning at the NYU Langone Hospital. Twisted me this way and that. thank god it went quickly bc it hurt quite a bit. I have been living with 24/7 ice packs wrapped around me. and under me as I sleep. They seem to be relieving some of the pain, and, I hope, alleviating some of the swelling.

My next step is having an MRI, which should reveal a lot more helpful info for the doctor. all soft tissue, etc. The as of yet undiagnosed thought by the doctor is that I have a Labral Tear in my hip. This is something that surgery can fix, not that I am looking forward to having any surgery! But happy to know that something can be done.(my other option is steroids, which I absolutely refuse to go anywhere near unless I had no other options.)

just keeping you all in the loop!

It this is instead of the osteophytes, I think that would be a much better diagnosis.

Unfortunately no.I still have the osteophytes. Bum Luck. If it were just the osteophytes, the PT could have been very useful. But bc of the level of pain I am in, and bc of where the pain is located, and bc they never took a MRI of the specific part of my hip and groin, they were not able to see 100% of what was needed to b seen. :weary: :grimacing:  :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

UPDATE:

just got results bk from X-rays:

hope bone is out of rotator socket and there are even more osteophytes than originally seen on previous X-ray and MRI;

Now I must wait for the MRI results. Surgery will be in order. Hopefully this will be done without general anesthesia, just either twilight or local; and in an outpatient procedure.

I will definitely be using a surgeon from HSS and not from NYU Langone. I want the best of the best.

Also, my current specialist is fully aware that I have refused to have a steroid injection for the pain treatment, and he understands why, Phew.

I was planning on treating myself to another grilled cheese sandwich after this news, but realized at the last minute that I no longer had an appetite. :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:. I’m having chocolate pudding instead :yum:

Those can be very helpful. Is it because of the BG stuff?

If it is because of the BG, you can knock it out with aggressive dosing.

Yes. I have ben on steroids in the past with my D. It as sheer hell and I refuse to go that route again. I don’t care how much insulin there is on this planet, it won’t b enough for me on steroids. Especially bc I must take anti-psychotics. bad bad combo for BGs.

I am sure you are on top of this, but please don’t go with a surgeon because he/she is at a better facility, vet the actual surgeon. There are great surgeons and awful surgeons at every facility I have ever worked at. Sorry, you need to vet a surgeon, that is never fun.

I will definitely vet a surgeon but am choosing HSS bc this is exactly what they are known for; and, they are not a hospital for the sick, they are strictly a hospital for surgery patients only. They get u in and out asap so that you are not in proximity to others illnesses. They have MANY surgeons to chose from in every possible specialty.

Awesome. I just said it because I have had people say things like I am having my surgery at XYZ awesome place, and not know who their surgeon is going to be. If the surgeon is good, I would let them operate in the alley rather than have a sucky surgeon do it poorly in the OR.

DM, I am so sorry to read this. Hoping that you are able to quickly remedy the labral tear and have a speedy recovery. I actually have had a partial labral tear in my upper arm/shoulder for a long time (that doesn’t require surgery unless I tear it further) that is exquisitely painful if I tweak it the wrong way. I can’t imagine a full tear and the pain you are in. :frowning: Sending good thoughts your way. xoxo - Jessica

HAD MRI THIS MORNING; THE VERY LATEST:

so now I am just waiting for the results of the MRI to reveal more info and to help me determine what actions to take. I feel comfortable with my current doctor, but he is NOT an MD, he is an OD…and especially NOT a surgeon. So I plan on finding another MD who specializes in my needs from HSS and get another opinion and action plan.

So far it seems like I will need a sports surgeon bc they mostly specialize in exactly my injuries.more will be revealed. still in terrible pain. :weary:

I am thinking you meant a DO, an OD is a Doctor of Optometry and probably wouldn’t be advising you on your hip. Just a comment from my perspective, DO’s and MD’s have very small differences in their schooling and one shouldn’t be preferred over the other based only on that differentiation. They are both capable of being board certified physicians, which is what I am looking for in a specialty physician.

Thank you for clarifying that. I was concerned that DOs were not “real” doctors, despite what the internet said.
