Wow Daisy! This is awesome. I just skimmed through the whole thread and you’ve been doing fantastic!
Wow! I had no idea that this subject was that interesting. I’m glad you found it so. Thanks for reading and thanks for the compliment!! Every time I do get a compliment it helps me to find the courage to continue on my experimental journey.
I don’t know if it could be related to the muscles, so much as it was for me the peaceful calm of the water. also, I would really let my mind wander when I was swimming, much more so than with the running; perhaps if I stay less focused while I am running, I will find a similar calm. But there is something so relaxing about being in the water (think “womb-like”) that there is not (at least for me yet) while running.
ANOTHER EXPERIMENT WITH GLUCOSE TABLETS:
(today worked out a lot better than Monday!)
after a day of rest, I went out for a beautiful and very fulfilling run today. The weather was cooperative this morning, and I was quite comfortable. The only problem was that it was a little crowded (despite the morning hour), and I didn’t have much opportunity to lower my face mask. (this makes breathing much more challenging. But still, I would rather be safe than sorry!)
Here are todays stats:
9:30am BG 94 turned down basal to 80% TB
10:15 BG 93 took 2.5 Gtabs and ran out the door
10:45 BG 79 took 1.5 Gtabs (perhaps I could have only taken 1 Gtab)
11:15 BG 115
11:30 BG 94 took 1/2 Gtab
11:45 BG 65 took 1.5 Gtabs
12PM BG 66 took 1 Gtab and turned my basal up to 95%
12:30 BG 65 took 1 Gtab (finished)
12:45 BG 78 bolused 4 units for refuel shake (32gms)
we’ll see what happens with the rest of my day. Yesterday was a bit tough bc I didn’t need as much basal, even though I hadn’t run. I kept going low, then I yo-yo ed from over corrections (very very frustrating.) And then for the overnight, I needed to raise my basal back up to 100%.
hopefully all goes well, but its another learning experience, and we’ll see how my run is tomorrow.

So…an hour running in the 60’s…
Welcome to the Dark Side, my friend!
Ahhhh; I am liking the Dark Side . I am wondering why it took me so long??? And I even bolus in my 60s now. I was wondering why when I was swimming I was too anxious to keep going when I went below 70. I was feeling quite strong while in my 60s. (But as you already know, I am not very hypo-aware .)
Looks like a pretty perfect run and numbers!!! You’ve got this!
Thanks. I am just praying That I don’t have to deal with a Yo-Yoing tonight. It really wipes the SH*T out of me, and I hate the stress and exhaustion that comes with it!!! Right now I’m doing fine though, and no spikes(Phew)!!!
Me, too! I think if you haven’t spiked yet, you will be fine!!
Fingers crossed
One difference is if you take out a gtab when you are in the pool, it will melt!
It’s easy to take carbs when running!
HAHAHA
STARTING OUT ON THE LOW SIDE EXPERIMENT:
well this morning I was caught a little off guard when after an hour my BGs hadn’t risen. but I thought, what the heck, I’m gonna just go for it. And I took some extra Gtabs and left the house for my run.
here are todays stats:
9:30 BG 91 turned pump basal down to 80%
10:30 BG 71 took 3.5 Gtabs and left the house
11am BG 104 took 1 Gtab
11:30 BG 80 took 1.5 Gtabs
11:50 BG 72 took 2 Gtabs
12:05 BG 72 took 1 Gtab and turned my basal back up to 95% TB
12:20 BG 52 took 2 Gtabs
12:45 BG 71 finished and bolused 4 units for refuel and drank 48oz water
Just wanted to let you know that last evening was a little tricky. I kept going low from about 4pm through the evening. I lowered my TB and ate heartily, but as this has become a pattern for over a week, I decided to lower my 1pm to 5pm basal by another .05U/hr. So today will be an experiment with that.
also, today was beautiful out. the heat was not bad at all (high 70s) with 65% humidity and a slight breeze by the East River. I felt very strong through the entire walk/run and believe that by September I will be running 100% of the time. (Thats the goal anyway). Then I will have to learn some entirely new methods of pump basals, as I did with my swimming. More experiments are always in front of me

How many days in a row did you do? Or how many total days this week?
It’s cumulative.
Do you know how little that amount is? It’s basically the same as if you added a single raisin to your diet. At some point - eventually one day - you might spike. But it would not be from the single raisin. It would be from a bunch of other factors. But if you said “Oh, the raisin spiked me, I need to adjusts my IC…” And then you chase your tail with IC adjustments for months.
There are a lot of factors at work. Making a change of only 0.05 units kind of confuses the issue.
You would probably be better off making a percentage change based on total hours of exercise in the past 48 hours.
For example, if you have had a total of 4 hours of exercise in the past 48 hours and you just finished, you would adjust down to 65%.
If it was 2 hours total and it had been 8 hours since, it would put you at 90%.
As you move toward no hours of exercise in the previous 48 hours, eventually you get back to 100%.
This will be much more effective and will make more sense for your body than a change of only 0.05 units.
Check out this chart I made for you. Consider using this.
This is an initial plan, and we could adjust it after a few weeks. But I think this makes a lot more sense than small arbitrary adjustments, because this uses the cumulative effect of your exercise and how long it has been since you did the exercise.
so far 4 days this week; Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Between 2 hours and 2.5 Hours each session.
I am ALSO on a 95% TB own top of that lower basal rate, which, I think, comes to a lower .1 U/hr lower. Does that sound about right to you???
Do you think that any of these afternoon lows could be attributed to the extra 1 unit I am taking with my bolus for my Boost Shakes?
Wow, I really like this logic! It does make sense. Eric, how did you come up with the percentages for DM? Would these numbers transfer to others or is it specific to DM?
It is specific to DM. The numbers would look very different for me.
That is what I was thinking, too
My sheer curiosity, How would they look for you? What type of basal profile do you use after your workouts? I know that YDMV, as ours all do, but I would love to get a sense of what others are doing to manage their BGs post run (or whatever exercise they’re doing). My swimming program was so much easier to manage, it seems, but there have been some interesting benefits to this running. I am just, clearly, not there yet. I am experimenting each time I go out there.
