Dexcom G6 filament broke and may be in my leg

I put a new one in, had some trouble as I forgot to remove the covers over adhesive. I managed to remove them while it was on and I saw the wire in me slip and it went back in. When it attached I had pressed the button by accident while getting it in place so it did not puncture me the same way- I often bleed a lot from it.

1/2 hour later it failed. I removed it and the sensor was gone. There was some swelling- a tiny white bump and a bit of stinging. I am not sure if it is under my skin or it fell off and I can’t find it.

Dexcom told me I need an ultrasound to see if it’s there etc. Will this cause damage? I don’t like the idea of this staying in me forever.

They sent a new sensor. I wonder what to do… call my doc? Nothing is coming out at the end so I can’t see it to pull it out.

TIA

I lost a G7 filament in my arm a while ago. I wasn’t sure and it didn’t bother me the first day but by the second it was pretty irritated. I just dug around in the site with a narrow (disinfected) tweezers. Most of what I pulled out seemed to be wound tissue and I couldn’t identify a specific piece of filament (its so tiny), but after I cleaned and covered it up and left it alone for a day everything was fine.

Have you ever had a splinter? The human body knows how to deal with this kind of thing. It’s not a hazard, just a nuisance.

Hi @diabetic101
Welcome to FUD!

You don’t need an ultrasound for this. That’s just Dexcom covering themselves.

Like @bkh said, it’s basically the same as a splinter. Your body will work it out over time.

You can try to help it move out with hydrogen peroxide, but if it is already closed you will just have to wait.

Or you can use a sterile insulin syringe and open it up and work it out. I do that with splinters all the time.

Or if you don’t want to wait, you can go to a doctor and have them remove it. But that is generally not necessary unless it is causing you pain.

Whatever you feel comfortable with.

Thanks. I don’t want to start opening up the area because I have a lot of skin sensitivities, lots of irritations with dexcom and my insets too which I have to use powerful steroids for, and eczema etc. I can’t see anything there also, so who knows how deep I have to go to get to it if it’s there. I am just observing it for now. I will call my endo and see what they recommend.

The problem is also that what if I put another one in there and it hits that one, that could cause issues in the future etc. It is made of platinum and silver so I don’t think it will go away if it doesn’t work itself out etc. It is longer than the average size splinter I have had.

There is some swelling near the puncture hole now which could be where the end of it is, I am not sure. It’s not hurting at this point. Hopefully it will just come out on its own.

Thanks, I am observing it for now and will call my endo to see what they say. I have a lot of skin issues etc. so it may be more of an issue for me. Hopefully it will work itself out. It’s pretty long so I will be amazed if it does. I have never had this happen with a dexcom sensor before.

Yes I know that, however this is longer than any splinter I have had and probably deeper so I am wondering if it will. I read some accounts online where people said the sensors never came out after they broke and they still have them inside their arm/leg etc. lol, I hope this will come out in time though.

Can someone tell me how I turn off email notifications for this website? I don’t want email notifications of replies or anything. * Never mind I just figure it out…Thanks

In all likelihood, IF it is in you, it will likely work its way out by the body’s natural processes handling a foreign substance, ala a splinter. Even if treated to prevent “rejection” the treatment will likely degrade and the body respond normally to foreign substance and push it up an out or the tissue. However, if you’re concerned then talk with your doc and get advice for your own peace of mind, if not action to confirm whether it is there and possibly remove it. Anything you get from folks here will likely be anecdotal and it sounds like you want to “know.”
