Thank you for introducing me to these awesome cartoons! Wracking my brain to figure out why they are sooo familiar. Major rabbithole of modernish artists that were influenced by his stuff. And, no, I didn’t know that he was involved with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Yes; the common link with Emett is most likely Rube Goldberg, which WaPo cites as an influence on Rhoads in their obituary.
Emett somewhat post-dates Goldberg; I read an article which describes them as “contemporaries”, but they differ in age by 26 years; the difference between 2022 and 1996. Rhoads offers another 20 years.
