Protein Requirements - Underestimated?

Evidence that protein requirements have been significantly underestimated. by Elango R, et al; Curr Opin Clin Nutr Metab Care. 2010 Jan;13(1):52-7; doi: 10.1097/MCO.0b013e328332f9b7 >> https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19841581

“SUMMARY: The indicator amino acid oxidation-based requirement values of 0.93 and 1.2 g protein/kg/day and the reanalysis of existing nitrogen balance studies are significantly higher than current recommendations. Therefore, there is an urgent need to reassess recommendations for protein intake in adult humans.”

check out the research by Stu Phillips at McMaster University; he’s done some great work on protein requirements in exercising athletes, the elderly and others. In generally he’s found that higher levels are better for building and maintaining muscle. I don’t think he has looked at those with diabetes though.
Here’s an interview:

And here’s a link to a bunch of his articles on PubMed
