Medtronic and Abbott launch new Instinct sensor

Medtronic and Abbott just introduced their new Libre 3-based Instinct sensor which will integrate with Medtronic’s 780G pumps. I’m very curious to see whether this sensor will be priced similarly to Libre 3 sensors and when they’ll start rolling out this sensor globally. With all the troubles Medtronic has with their own sensors, this could be a major improvement to their hybrid closed loop system.

Sounds like it will be proprietary.

The Instinct sensor was created exclusively for the MiniMed™ 780G system.

I really dislike the proprietary stuff.

Tandem did that with their infusion sets about 8 years ago. They went from the standard Luer-lock to their own t:lock, which meant you could only use their infusion sets.

Yeah, that was their intention from the get-go. When they first announced their plans for this sensor, they said they were going to develop a new Libre-based sensor. I think it’s stupid they didn’t just develop Libre integration for 780G pumps like Tandem, but if this is introduced in Europe too and pricing will be at the same level as Libre sensors, I’ll look at it from the positive side. This will make the case to finally extend insurance coverage to hybrid closed loop systems a lot easier than with Medtronic’s wildly overpriced CGMs.

Friend has reported 93% in range with the new Medtronic pump, so let’s see if that can be improved upon!

Finally! Medtronic teaming up with Abbott sounds like the smartest thing they’ve done in years. The old sensors drove me crazy with all the calibration errors. Curious if insurance will treat this like a Libre or make it another “premium” product.

It’s inexcusable if they sell this at a higher price than a Libre.

Sad how Medtronic destroyed the innovation of MiniMed the past 25 years.

Lol, they seriously couldn’t decide on that name before announcing the separation? How many hours of deliberation went into that?

TCOYDs Dr. Edelman has raved about the new Medtronic pump algorithm on their YouTube and podcasts quite a bit over the last year. I guess it’s pretty aggressive once your CGM goes over 150 as compared to Omnipod 5 and Tandem.
