Who at the Discourse development team thought it a good idea to separate the like button and likes count?
I haven’t been too active lately and now I find myself either trying to like a post by clicking the heart on the left or looking at the right and wondering why nobody has shown appreciation for a good post. This is confusing.

How long does it take? I’m 66, I’m still getting used to things, it takes a while. I suppose many of us just think war, rapine and bad attitude have still to be learned but for me bad UI trumps the lot. I admit I probably have two counter-rotating propeller blades on top of the G7 mounted on top of my head, but still.

Me too. We can complain about changes in user interfaces, but isn’t it like shouting into the void?
I do some work with a 'lifelong learning institute" at Tufts, and the older the member is, the more confusing they find the technology.

Being super confident in my typing skills because I had been doing it since the mid 80s when it started being a thing, (I would have been a teenager by then), I challenged @Liam-M to a typing test. I type somewhere between 80-90wpm cold and once warmed up, around 110-120wpm.
He took me up on the challenge and beat me like 4 times…kids being exposed from a very early age makes them better at practically everything “technology” related, i’ve found…even those things I thought I was certain to dominate in.

I type fast enough but my error rate is enormous. I learned to type on my mother’s Singer sometime around the early '70’s. The Singer was a massive chunk of iron; hit those keys straight and hard or you end up with a complete mess. 50 years later I can hit the “backspace” key as fast as any other key, and I need to. I tried this:
They said I took 16 minutes 55 seconds and typed at 43WPM with 95% accuracy; I did correct every mistake. Traditionally a mistake dings a word. That’s because a mistake has to be corrected with either correction fluid or, for the bad typists like me, hit the ribbon shift to get the correction ribbon up (though I think that was only later electric typewriters). It takes a really long time to correct a mistake.
I also type slower when replying, like here, because I read the words and the sentence I’m typing. If I’m touch typing I just type what’s on the paper; I do read the words because the spelling helps my typing but I certainly don’t read the sentence. I can barely remember a single word from what I typed in the test despite the fact that it started out with a subject with which I am very familiar and very interested in!
Guess what my single most prominent mistake was. Clue; it’s in every post I write and in none of my posts you read…
I type two spaces after every full stop at the end of a sentence.

I saw someone used it at the top of this thread and tried the long press on my phone! On a desktop, they pop up if you hover over the heart.
