U actually saw Her!! Wow, good eyesight. I was hoping that someone would notice her  and thanks for noticing my ā€œrunners tan.ā€ I put on so much sunblock, but it doesnā€™t seem to keep the rays away. :sunny:

Iā€™m very familiar with this view but across the river, on the Manhattan side since I used to work down near Battery Park on Wall St  I frequently had my lunch with Her just gazing across the bay thinking how beautiful She is!!

Wow, yes, you get so much sun running along the East River, no way the sunblock will keep you from tanning, but at least it keeps you from burning!!! :sunny: You look beautiful, tan and healthy!!!

DM - sorry Iā€™ve been wrapped up in my own world for some time, but so glad your shoes are working out and that your A1c was phenomenal!

As far as running in the rain - I donā€™t go if itā€™s pouring out because itā€™ll make my contacts fall out, but Iā€™ll go if itā€™s spitting rain. Itā€™s actually kind of nice and refreshing during the heat. But I would not recommend doing any long run when itā€™s rainy bc of blisters you might not normally get due to damp clothes, shoes, and socks. For D supplies when itā€™s raining, I leave my meter and strips at home, but for you - could you put the testing supplies in a ziploc and stash that in your belt? The spi belt will be fine and any glucose tabs are probably in a water resistant case already. Then you can take out the testing supplies as needed when under an awning?

But ya - Iā€™m with you there with hating that the weather is determining our workouts. Not fun to get out the door to 90+ and crazy humidity, and then for the run to feel much harder than usual. I probably complained about cold temps before, but Iā€™m ready for Fall and Winter already

Hi Larissa! Nice to hear from you again. Yes, this weather is sheer Hell. I am really looking forward to the Fall season. A little sketchy about the cold of winterā€¦but not to fear something that hasnā€™t happened yet !

Look bk up at my post. I mentioned that I took Tryingā€™s suggestion and put my meter/strips,etc in a ziplock baggie for the rain yesterday! But, like you, if it had been pouring, there would be no way I would have headed out. Tomorrow is going to be one of those days: terrible thunder showers all day long (also, I see my endo on a morning video visit so I wouldnā€™t have been able to get out early anyway.)

anyway, today looks like a beauty, so I am looking forward to my run. Hope youā€™re able to get out there too and enjoy yourself! How has your summer ben going?

Certainly intimidating, but I think youā€™ll really appreciate it after this heat.
Yup - tomorrow looks pretty gross (well all of this week calls for a lot of rain! :frowning: )

Hope you have a wonderful time today! Iā€™ve gotten so lazy over the summer and sleep in so by the time Iā€™m up and running itā€™s always warm already   that will have to change once I get back to classes. Iā€™ll be heading out for a run after finishing writing this up :running_woman: I will try to make it a long run, but will take whatever Iā€™m feeling (Eric is probably so mad reading this). Anyways - enjoy your run today, Iā€™ll be thinking of you while on mine!

No, that is always the best type of run. Yesterday I doubled the planned distance I had at the start, because I ā€œfeltā€ it. I like the idea of you listening to your body!

Best temp, you remember it, right! :grinning:

RELATIVE FLATLINE AND A BAG OF FROZEN PEAS:

well, its amazing what changing out a pump will do for your BGs  all throughout the night my Bgs were perfect: 85,87,87,69ā€¦so this morningā€™s run prep continued to go smoothly! Hooray! Today was my 3rd day in a row, and I was very excited bc the weather was extremely accommodating (90ish) (tomorrow is expected to be a nightmare, but I am taking off anyways)

here are todays stats:

9am BG 69 took 1/2 tab
9:30 BG 76 lowered basal to 85%
10:30 BG 79 took 2.5 tabs and was out the door ( I waited an extra 1/2 hour on the TB bc I was trending low and I figured it was in my best interest to let the lowered basal to kick in more)
10:55 BG 76 took 2 tabs
11:15 BG 85 took 1 tab
11:45 BG 110
12pm BG 84 took 1/2 tab
12:20 BG 46 (whoops) took 2 tabs
1pm BG 81 finished, bolused 4 units for refuel and drank 24oz water

with the exception of the 46 BG, it was a beautiful run. very comfortable and joyous. was very surprised that I re-cooped from the low BG as quickly as I did. I simply slowed down, waiting for my sugars to come back up. this is something I would NEVER have had the confidence to do when I was swimming ! So I was truly amazed by this. Anywayā€¦back to the frozen peas:

yesterday all throughout my run, my hip was in unbearable pain. I had to take it slowly, especially being on the concrete. when I got home I put a bag of frozen peas on my hip for about 45 minutes. it seemed to help bc today I felt much better ( I also took 800mg of Ibuprofin ). I am still uncomfortable, but I am doing the pea-thing once more. I wonā€™t b needing more than that. I also have started doing stretching exercises post-run, and I feel that it is relaxing my muscles more. I donā€™t feel as tight as I had been.

signing out,

DM

No more spiking before? Is it because you are starting earlier, or is it because your mind is relaxed about it?

Itā€™s cool you were running at 46 and kept going until you finished! :+1:
Maybe a Transcend there instead of the gtabs?

We might need to talk about some stretches and exercises for thisā€¦

I think that this is bc my mind is relaxed and even excited/looking fwd to my run. (also, I am getting out of bed earlier and getting geared up right away, and I kind of settle into the transition from bed to the road :star_struck:.)

I have been stretching after my run but just my legs, not my hips. I am seeing my Rheumatologist this Friday morning. Heā€™s the one who manages my lumbar arthritis (bi-lateral).

Ask if he can give you a list of core exercises for you hips. I can post some, but it would be great to get them from the doc and specifically meant for your needs.

I definitely will ask him. I was seeing a physical therapist for a while, but discontinued seeing her once my pain had subsided.

Do you have exercises for your hips? Did you like your physical therapist? It might be a good idea to get hooked up with her again.

bc of the pandemic, this is not possible. But I can do the exercises myself at home. I just have to put in the effort and commit to it. :unamused: :weary:

So I was in touch with my Rheumatologist who looked over my MRI and my CT scan. I have bi-lateral lumbar arthritis in my spine and now have developed something called Osteophytes in my right hip. Basically, this is a build-up of calcium deposits, kind of like a bone spur, caused by the arthritis itself. Thus, the excruciating pain I have been experiencing.

Unfortunately, for the time being, I must discontinue running and even speed-walking. I am beginning treatments of physical therapy and massage therapy. This is not something that ordinary stretches for my hip will alleviate.

I am very very depressed and disappointed. Its been challenging enough emotionally to put swimming on the back burner during this pandemic, but now without running regularly, I feel cheated. I have been trying so hard to make the most of a lousy and unfortunate and dire health crisis situation. I have been trying to go with the flow and adjust. Now what?

Any feedback and/or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I am so blue. :weary: :grimacing: :sob:

I am so sorry, DM! This was so unexpected. I know what an effort youā€™ve been making and doing so well, too. I hope that the physical therapy brings you relief and that you can get back to running eventually without pain. I know swimming is your sport but man, I donā€™t know if the pools will be opening up anytime soon, at least not indoor pools. What other sport could you partake in without causing pain? Maybe the physical therapist will have some suggestions?? Of course, you donā€™t want to make it worse, so it is best to get a recommendation. Maybe a rowing machine :rowing_woman:? It is non-impact but it would stretch your hips so could cause pain. I have one, but only use it as a last resort, like when I donā€™t have time for a run. It is actually an all-around excellent exercise and I think people even have rowing competitions on the machines. I hope you start to feel better soon and please do not be blue. Things will get better and we are all sending you our love.

Itā€™s funny that you should mention this, bc my husband had a full hip replacement about 4 years ago and (he was an ultra marathon runner) he was unable to run anymore, so he went to the Y and started rowing. Then, he found other rowers on line and began competing. What a great coincidence! And, he had no problems with his hip at all. Maybe when the Y re-opens ( which apparently wonā€™t be any time soon), I will be able to get into rowing. You never know. As I have heard before, there is a saying that ā€œwhen one door closes, God opens anotherā€¦just donā€™t stand in the hallway for too long.ā€ Iā€™ll certainly be looking for that opening window

Isnā€™t there a river near where you live. They canā€™t stop you from swimming. Just saying.
