I am having trouble matching my insulin to my actual needs although I believe I am estimating correctly. Being LADA probably doesn’t help as I don’t know how much insulin my pancreas continues to make. I would love to try an ‘Inpen’ which apparently tells you how much insulin you have on board before treating, but when I spoke to the manufacturer they assured me that Kaiser would not cover this. I suppose I should/could consider paying out of pocket to see how it goes. Anyone here have experience?
I’ve used the InPen with both Humalog and Novalog. The advantage of it for me is that it dispenses half unit doses. The pen itself doesn’t track IOB, but the app that it pairs with does. However, you can also enter doses manually in the app. I have done this when I was using Humalog Kwikpens, for example. It will keep track of your IOB just the same as with the InPen. You might try downloading the app to see if this works for you, if all you need is a good estimate of IOB at any time. You do need to enter the duration of insulin for you if it differs from the default (I think this is 4 hours, but check for yourself). The app also has a dose calculator that will take your current BG and estimated carbs and figure out a dose that takes into account your IOB. This also assumes that you enter your IC ratios correctly, but it can be useful.
Thanks so much Lisa. Such useful info…
I am currently using the inpen as @needlesandmath has said it does do a lot. I got it especially for 1/2 unit dosing. It does calculations well & tracks IOB. Problem is it is not compatible with Dexcom G7 only the G6 & I am not going back there. I am doing a lot of dual entries Dex~Inpen. If I had it to do again I would strongly look at the Novopen Echo Plus. Its G7 compatible @TomH mentioned it on another thread.
Not sure I like Inpens math on this one. Already flattened out at 134 (no carbs)
Dexcom 149 trending down
Inpen recommending 27 carbs
Different day, different coaster, same cruddy ride :head shake:
Learning curve with the inpen for me hasn’t gone very smoothly. Control pumping was better not great but better.
Last night was a bad Dexcom night. Brief sensor outages, many calibrations. I don’t think my Dexcom likes that Dexcom Tech Wait time 635 Minutes! What? post
@SobeiT All depends on your on your personal settings (basal, ICR, ISF) as well as IOB/COB. Not sure what data inpen’s take or consider. For me at that level (149) 27 carbs would drive me high with no insulin given!
Yes me as well so I didn’t take insulin or eat 27 carbs, it would have drove me high.
Edit: Inpen does not consider basal or COB but COB would be important for the pens so it doesn’t keep over suggesting eat XX many carbs. ICR, ISF, IOB are used by the pen.
