I have T1D and my husband has a crazy sleep/work schedule that results in a lot of “quiet hours” in our household. We prioritize keeping a calm household without overscheduling both to protect my husband’s sleep management and to help maintain my blood sugar routines.
This morning, I was talking to my 12 year old on the way to school. I told him that sometimes I feel insecure that maybe my Type 1 Diabetes (as well as their dad’s sleep schedule) holds my kids back from doing things they would otherwise do.
Without missing a beat, my son responded, “Your Type 1 Diabetes PROTECTS us. It keeps us from being overscheduled like every other family at school. We don’t want that.”
I thought that perspective was AMAZING and wise.
