Uncrustables

I am headed to an outdoor ice hockey tournament, entirely older players so I will be in my element. The town we are staying in does not have much in the way of restaurants, just bar food. I am seriously considering bringing some Uncrustables to help get through the 3 days without eating too many french fries….but I’ve never had one.

Just curious if anyone has tried Uncrustables for similar purpose, refueling after exercise. The label says 28 grams carbs and 9 grams fat. Are they fast carbs, slow, medium?

The origination of the idea is an article I read recently saying the 32 NFL teams all added up go through 80,000 or more Uncrustables per season, with players eating them at halftime as well as after practices etc.

I have not had them. But based on the ingredients it looks like they would be fast with a little bit of slightly medium (jelly would be the fast part, the bread would be the medium-ish part). Certainly nothing in there is a very slow carb.

For refueling after exercise, fast is good. :+1:

I tried my first uncrustable today at lunch…I think you are right about the fast carbs. Definitely no delayed BG rise…and an hour after eating one I was starving.

Not sure if the Uncrustables will be filling enough to get me where I need to be, they are more like a soft candy bar than a sandwich. I am guessing those NFL giants probably eat 5 or 6 at a time.

I personally love them as a 37-year-old adult, and take them in my work lunch almost every day. I try to eat a variety of stuff (Greek yogurt and raw vegetables, usually) and that seems to help prevent a spike. Good luck with your experimentation!

I’m sad to report that the Uncrustables, while yummy and pretty quick for the 28 grams of carbs, did not pass the test. The weekend hockey was good until Sunday’s games were all cancelled (water main break) which was a real bummer and might have influenced my totally subjective review. Got all prepped for playing Sunday morning and then turned around instead and drove home (4 1/2 hours drive…) By the time I got home and unpacked, the Uncrustable I had packed for that morning game was pretty well mashed.

Overall I was able to eat one after each game with a minor bolus amount and successfully avoid a BG spike, but the “bread” pouch around the outside was a little too thin/fragile and sort of grossly spongey for my taste. I never got used to that. I’m playing before dinner today and plan to switch back to a traditional PBJ on grainy bread for the drive home.

So Uncrustable does not mean unbreakable. :joy:
