I’m going from the US to Italy tomorrow. Would putting a G6 sensor in my checked luggage destroy it because of the temperature fluctuations or would it most likely be fine because it’s just a filament with a reagent and a mechanical inserter? Would the answer be the same for a G7?
I would be bringing this one as a backup to my backups which I’ll have with me in my carry on. So,while I wouldn’t welcome it, I’m okay with the risk of lost luggage. I just don’t want to make the Dexcom inaccurate/inoperable.
Thanks and apologies if this question has been asked and answered previously.
Bonus question: assuming Dexcoms are fine going through airport x-rays. I’m pretty sure I’ve done it before without incident. Anyone think otherwise?
I have generally placed them in my carryon bag. Have not seen a problem with them going through x-ray there. I do not expose a Tandem pump to x-ray though as literature from the company says it is not approved. You can avoid a hand check by removing the pump and going through normal screening. But be very careful to keep up with the pump. Even under normal circumstances a TSA staffer will run off with it to have it checked for explosives. And you will have to go to it; they will not be looking for you to get it back.
I think it’s probably fine. I’ve done this and it was fine. I wouldn’t put insulin into checked luggage because you can’t guarantee that it won’t reach freezing temperatures, but it will probably be OK. Mark the packaging on the ones in checked luggage so you know which ones were subject to temp extremes incase you see funny behavior.
Just returned from a couple of weeks of European travel where my bags wound up being checked a number of times and spare G6 + dash pods seem just fine! I kept insulin w me in carry on. Have so much fun!
I always carry all my stuff with me, just so I don’t lose it. However, the Sexy Dexy and the Poppin Pod will likely be fine in checked. Assuming it makes it to your destination. That seems like a very big if to me, but to each their own.
May be too late to answer They are fine from experience, but there is always a risk of your checked bag not making it. We travel a lot and have experienced this problem several times. Now we never check anything.
When you carry medical equipment with you you are able to take in more volume in-cabin. My son has a “medical equipment” tag on his large backpack and has never had any problem. Good luck!
As a general rule, and just to be on the safe side, I always tell them I cannot go through the x-ray machine and get hands scanned. I just posted something about traveling with the Dexcom G7 but reading all these responses. I’m hearing that a lot of people travel even abroad with them. I’ve been concerned about that since they’re always so many potential problems.
Hope all parts of the travel went well. I hardly fly any more but did much international trips in the past (one year I was fine more than 80% of the year).
I always carried supplies in carry on and also never experienced any issue in the security lines— I always explained was wearing a pump and it was always recognized as medical equipment without question.
I’m back. Everything went well. No security issues. I used to request pat downs, now just walk through machines and I’m happier. Started the G6 I put in my checked bag today and it seems fine.
