The great milkshake and banana split challenge!

It is really awesome to see how you and @TiaG are able to progressively come up with methods that work even with toddlers – the hardest of all. To me, it shows how our forum philosophy – experimenting over and over with a strong scientific backing, and taking advantage of what others find – makes such a difference.

I am really proud of what you have achieved! Kudos to you and your WONDERFUL family!

Wow that is impressive!!! I can’t believe you didn’t get above 120 and high 60’s isn’t bad at all.

I picked up another wendy’s chocolate frosty so I can try again. This time hopefully the spike is in the 160’s not 190’s. I’m waiting until peppermint ice cream is back in stores for sundae’s since that’s my favorite.

I think my whining about not having a milkshake for years was the inspiration for @Michel to start this thread, so here is my contribution.

I was out with my family yesterday and we decided last minute to eat out at a restaurant that has excellent milkshakes. Three of my children ordered milkshakes, and I felt some peer pressure from this group to order a milkshake, so I went for it. I was a bit high to start 115 (6.4) from a bit too much snack from earlier in the afternoon- but went for it anyways.

The game plan was to do a superbolus for all carbs up front and two hours of basal plus a correction and then hopefully the timing between the arrival of the milkshake and the meal would work with the insulin action to keep me from going high. I usually bolus for protein, especially with a giant burger, but didn’t in this case because of the large amount of carbs I was eating.

I was using Fiasp for those interested and I am also a lower carb guy so this was like eating a couple days carbs in one sitting.

Here are the results after I ordered my food: (Green zone is 3.8 to 8 mmol/l which translates to 69 to 144 mg/dl)

4:25 pm Super bolus (milkshake + burger + 2 hours of basal + correction)
4:35 pm Started milkshake - drank it pretty fast because my T1 toddler was trying to steal it. I gave him a little bit and he ate all the whipping cream off the top.
5pm Ate giant burger with extra carbs and a few french fries.
T=2.5 h Blood sugar started to rise as it appears insulin was running out but food still digesting. hit it with corrections of 1u, 2u, 1u and then got a nice drop. Got home and had some more insulin and a beer (which explains the next drop and the rise around 10pm).

Overall - pretty happy with the results. Highest BG was 185 (10.3) but I was only above 180 (10) for about 20 minutes.

I did not wait for my blood sugar to drop after the initial bolus because there was lots going on and I just could not wait. If I had the luxury of time I would have waited for my BG to drop closer to 70 before I had the milkshake, but as I said, life got in the way and I just went with it.

I try to keep below 144 all the time, so there was a brief excursion into high territory with this try. Next time, I will bolus for the protein and fat which should keep me from getting that rise around 2.5 hours and will try to start with a lower BG.

What did I ever do before owning a CGM?

EDIT: Another excuse for the milkshake was to celebrate my first A1C in the 5’s

@Aaron, this is unlimited! Congratulations on that, and super-congrautlations on celebrating an A1c in the 5s, and hyper-congratulations for a totally glucose-normal looking track-- that is OUTSTANDING! What a great result and what a great post!

I am thrilled! You made my day

I missed two things from my previous post:

  1. It was Strawberry :strawberry:
  2. The grainy cell phone photo (It looked bigger and better in real life)

Thank you @Chris! I kinda felt like running, so it was not really because of the split, more of a coincidence. My dad was not super-happy about my long run because I was not able to do a real banana split test.

Please say hello to @Cody for me, I was bummed that he spiked on the brown basmati rice.

lol, @ClaudnDaye ! I probably can’t run as fast as you right now, but if you give me a year I’ll get a lot better! Mostly, I am a swimmer though.

Thanks very much, @CarolynA!

That’s great! I figure it will take us a long time to figure out exactly how to deal with your frosties and my banana splits. That’s good, cos it means we get to eat a lot of them  That’s why I like science (heh).

I like your write-ups on triathlons a lot. I really want to try, but I am not a very good biker or runner either (or a swimmer, really). But I read them all anyway, and I figure I will learn from you.

Btw I really like peppermint ice cream too.

Haha I consider myself “mostly a runner”. At least that’s whats on my strava profile. But I swam in high school, and I swim 2-3h/week masters now, so I know how swim team goes. 12-15h/week in high school was really hard, and I was the slowest one on varsity and I wasn’t even t1 then.

Just gave myself 1.5u pre-bolus for my frosty (48 carbs). That’s my dinner tonight. Its also cheating since I’m very insulin sensitive in the evenings (I spiked to 260 for waffles and maple syrip for breakfast this am since I was runnign late to the office and wanted waffles, not eggs__ and it was the right ratio since I was back where I started 3h later). I’ve been in the mid-90’s since after lunch swim practice. Plan is 1.5u until I start to drop then 1 more unit.

I did my first tri the weekend of my 16th birthday since my parent’s bought me half a road bike when i got my drivers license. I did a bazillion tri’s in your neck of the woods '03-'07. At my best (06-07) i was equally mediocre at swim/bike/run… now I’m still equal but slower at swim/run and awful on the bike since I don’t actually bike anymore. Triathlete’s can’t swim at all- my best 100 free was like 1:00.1 (grrrr…) and I still come out top 15% even though I’m much slower than that now (if we are doing 100’s for time I can do a 1:10 in practice).

Got it! Much easier in the evening than earlier in the day for me. 1.5u humalog at 7:30. I’d been running steady in the mid 90s. Ate a small, 10oz Wendy’s chocolate frosty 48carb at 8:15, finished 8:30. Took another 0.5u at 8:35. Now (10:14) down to 110 and peaked at 145. Based on a 4h insulin action time for the humalog, I think I have enough on board to get me back to 90 which is my target always.

The next challenge will be when I get peppermint ice cream again… that’s my demon.

@CarolynA, that is supercool - a peak of 145 is what a normal would do, that’s really great!

90 is a great target. I always try to be on the lower half of the range, i.e. below 100 for myself too.

Good luck with the peppermint ice cream!
