Still minimal follow-up from endo

I wasn’t misdiagnosed, but that’s because I got myself referred to an endo very early in the emergence of the disease. Chalk one up for my health hypervigilance, I guess. My A1C was slightly elevated and I pushed to get it checked, which was when I discovered that I was weakly positive for GAD antibodies and had low C peptide. It took 6 years of monitoring for me to hit the formal diagnostic A1C threshold–a very drawn out waiting period–but when I did it was clearly time for insulin.

I think that counts. What do you think? One week is pretty good.

I was misdiagnosed for about 3 months. To be fair to Cambridge City Hospital, where I was initially diagnosed, they did get me on insulin quick, but first came Metformin. And really long pen needles.

We are fortunate to have the Joslin Diabetes Clinic in Boston, and once I was seen there they immediately changed the diagnosis from Type 2 to Type 1 adult onset.

I was initially reluctant to go to Joslin, as the folks at Cambridge City seemed good (and neither they nor I knew any better). But a colleague at work pointed out that we had this world-class resource in our town, and it would be a shame if I didn’t use it.

Which is another illustration of the adage: “As a patient, you are your own best advocate”

and to @andrea8 - “the squeaky wheel gets the grease” - so if you are waiting to hear back from the endo, drop her a line or give a call to remind her.

@needlesandmath What a long honeymoon!

BTW my Mom’s good friend was a tax expert and a weaver. She could be taxweaver. Funny to me.

Where is our technical documentation (trusted) for Omnipod 5? I expect to see something like what we had for Loop, for Omnipod 5 and Twist. Does that not exist? LoopDocs

Twiist appears to be based on the Loop algorithm, so lets inspect some of these resources and evaluate which are useful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjJ7IqgQ0ug

Check out CBCDE (certification Board for CDE). They have a Locate a CDE resource on the website. That might help. Be sure to ask about their T1D caseload, When I was first Dx’d, 45+ years ago, most of the CDE’s were skilled in T2D. At least the admitted that, and sent me elsewhere.

I regularly check that site for my area. There are 2, one will not take my insurance, The other is not a certified diabetes educator but a nutritionist.

I am in Western New York state.

Just read your other posting about your visit. Can you get a different endo or is this guy the only game in town?

It’s my third or fourth (if you count nurse pract. and PAs) and it’s a lot of work to get a new one.

It’s a him but they had a female Medical assistant call me back to “Relay” to the doc. I wish I had such a clinic in Buffalo, NY.. but I will research available endos here. Has Joslin been attentive to your needs? Or are they like many other specialists…in and out and hardly a word and no questions answered??? I am on my third or fourth. BTW, you look like Mick Jagger…your little image is just like him …or is that intentional?

Hi Andrea - yah the Mick Jagger is intentional – I look a little like that but not very much.

Joslin is a great clinic - world class - and pretty easily available to anyone in Boston. I see my Endo once a year for about 20 minutes where we tweak this and that. I have appointments every 6 months with a PA who is also very good.

We are lucky in this part of the US to have a lot of very good medical care. I know this might not be the case in many other parts of the world.

He’s 85 and you’re 57 so you don’t wanna look too much like him

The TYOCD guys in San Diego would be good also but only 3400 miles…We do have a world class cancer research hospital here in Buffalo but I would rather not have to use it.
