By now we have started receiving the notifications of change that apply to our current coverage. In my case that’s Part D; Part A, Part B and “Medigap” (Medicare Supplemental insurance) do not change on the year. Only Part C and Part D change.
My “AARP” (aka United Healthcare) Part D premium is going up massively; $1300 to $2200. The deductible goes up too, but that increase is small; $130 to $300. The OOPMax, which is set by Congress, increases somewhat but probably in line with inflation.
The OOPMax (AKA “catastrophic coverage”; a catastrophe is using a prescription insulin pump) change as follows:
2026: $2100
2027: $2400
That corresponds to 14% inflation. (2400/2100). Ask your congressperson why prescription drug costs have inflated by 14%. Ask your businessperson why your insurer’s premium costs have inflated by 69%.
The 2027 number is hidden in very small print on page 11 of my “Annual Notice of Change”. The 2026 number ($2100) was not included. This number matters a lot.
On October 15, or whenever your insurance company manages to fix all the bugs in their Web UI, you can, and must find out how much your drug costs, your doctor/hospital costs (Part C only), your maxes, will increase. I know it is a PITA; every time I see a web page I scream. Most likely everything will have changed.
The only good apple in the barrel is that October 15 is the last day for submitting our tax returns. Of course it’s the first day for dealing with our healthcare nightmare. Good apple, bad apple; we end up eating them all regardless.
