Martin's Law (like Murphy's law, but worse)

Liam’s Fred (POD) expired early this morning and we changed it around 6am…then he went back to sleep until around 7am. At the time of changeout, his BGs were around 90. I didn’t notice after the changeout that his BGs started slowly creeping up (even though he’d had nothing to eat). He left for school with his brother around 0715 and BGs kept creeping up, but not fast…just gradual up to around 150.

Well, guess what today was? The school spelling Bee…I had meetings and wasn’t able to attend, but his mother was able to be there. Regardless…I was confused because his BGs just kept moving up and up and up…even though he’d eaten no breakfast (he wasn’t hungry) and even though I’d also given a remote bolus.

By the time he was in his 3rd round (many dropped out during the 2nd round and there were only 2 remaining…him and one other kid). That kid had the word “Warlock” (Liam was like…really??? He actually told me “They threw him a softball word”….) Anyhooooooo! By the time he got to the 3rd round, his BGs had gone all the way up over 300 and I had to have him do a fingerstick IN THE MIDDLE of the Spelling Bee…he didn’t want too. He actually said “I can’t.”…then corrected it with “I don’t want too”….I had to be an ogre and say it’s important, so he did it. He was 292.

Long story short, his mother brought him home after the spelling bee ended (he ended up being runner up with the word “Wittle”…he spelled it “Widdle”), and we changed Fred and put a new one on (something I would have wanted to do earlier given he was bolused a total of 8u in the hopes he’d start coming back down, but he didn’t.) Going by the old addage of “If in doubt, change it out,” we changed it out and immediately it started coming down…he got up to nearly 400 before Fred was changed, and he started coming back down again.

The post is really about why every single day of school is pretty seamless and uneventful, but the day of a big event we have BG issues.

At least he had a soft landing. Here’s the BG chart for the last 24 hours…he at late and lingered just under 200 most of the night too.

We also ran into another issue a couple weeks back when the school was taking a trip to the Biltmore Estate in NC (beautiful mansion…been there a few times.) His phone suddenly started losing charge more quickly than usual and he indicated he wasn’t using it. Well, idiot me forgot to pack extra supplies because we were rushing that morning to get him to the bus in time (big families always seem to be rushing for some reason. lol) Anyway, I forgot to pack insulin pen, extra pods, THE CORRECT CHARGING CABLE, etc., He did have a power bank that I packed, but it did no good because I packed the wrong cable for him to plug it up.

His phone actually died during that trip and thankfully I had really good communication going with the principal and the adult responsible for Liam and the other kids with medical conditions. Long story short, they found the correct cable and he was able to get plugged up, charged and had a great time.

That’s a great lesson in just pushing through life.

And congrats on 2nd place, nothing to be disappointed about there!

:star_struck:

As a consolation prize, I offer some Warlock spell cards. :slightly_smiling_face:

When my daughter was in middle school she was in an individual spelling bee (it had been a team activity before then).
She wasn’t one of the last two, but during the final competition (between one of the really smart kids in her school (Robby B) and someone else (we’ll call her Linda W), Robby B was declared the winner and then the judge realized that there had been a technical error, forcing them to redo the round, and Robby then lost. This was in a big middle school auditorium at the end of a long spelling bee.

Many tears were involved, and we all agreed that it seemed unfair, to win and then lose. We were glad that it didn’t happen to my daughter. Very rough.

Congrats to Liam!

In elementary school I knocked myself out of the spelling bee on “indelible” and since then I have never misspelled that word. Liam will remember how to spell widdle forever, that is the legacy of spelling bees. (Edit: wittle)

I was gonna say!!! I asked him and sure enough, he knows for sure how to spell that word now. Lol. Wittled was the exact word and he spelled it widdled. He knows it’s t’s now (and probably forever).

Isn’t it spelt “whittle”? I can understand that if someone pronounced it without the “h” (which is barely there but certainly is there) I might spell it “widdle” (because “t” and “d” are difficult to distinguish) or maybe “little”, as in, “Ooh, a whittle doggie.”

You are right! I confirmed with him that although he spelled it Widdled, the correct spelling is what you stated…”whittled”. When i asked earlier, he wasn’t paying attention to me, or my question about the word, how he spelled it, and what the correct spelling is…(he was playing with his brothers.). But you are absolutely correct.

Congrats to both Liam for his spelling accumen right up to the end (I’d blame it on being high!) and your/the wife’s follow thru to get treated appropriately! At over 400 I’d have probably freaked out a bit more, though I’m sure you were all just a bit anxious! Good lesson for us all on ensuring we have the needed supplies for a trip (don’t think I’ve been to the Biltmore Estate!).
