Is my Dad a Type 2/have Type 2 levels?

I tested my Dad’s blood sugar 3 hours after his breakfast, and it was 6.7. That seems high to me for a non-diabetic. Should he tell his Dr./ask for an A1C?

Wouldn’t hurt. I wish I had been diagnosed with a lower BG. 6.7 mmol/L is not terribly high but 3 hours should be closer to 5.5 or less.

It may be a fluke, like he had a carb rich meal with fat and protein to slow digestion.

I don’t know why they don’t make A1C a standard test. Especially for older adults.

They always test blood pressure. They weigh you. They ask you if you feel safe in your home. They ask you how many times you drink alcohol in a week.

How about doing an A1C too?

There are the simple point-of-care A1C testers that don’t even require a vein draw. You can test it with a finger-stick.

While costs can add up for everything we might should check for, seems knowing and treatment based on suspicion is better than not knowing and suffering the consequences. Labcorp puts the cost @ $89 (includes cholesterol and diabetes screening), CVS @ $59 for diabetes screening alone. Both are without insurance coverage being taken into account. I think screening alone can be found even less expensive if you look around (look for previous post about ADA and Congressional funding for programs to emphasize screening). I often wonder if I’d known before symptoms became apparent in late life if the impacts of T1 could have been prevented or delayed by the “right” tests and treatments…
