There is so much in that one pic.
That’s similar wood paneling to what was in my childhood home’s family room. And on our station wagon.
I started out on U-40!
As did I
I can’t remember when U-100 came along …… It must have been around the same time?
Just checked …. In fact it was 1973
I wasn’t a diabetic back then and I was a teen. But it immediately brought back memories of smells of the old small time pharmacies.
Mine too!!
I started on U40 Lente only in 1965.
It was mid 80s before switching to multiple injections of NPH and Regular. Later to human insulin. For years they said I could not donate blood, due to risk of mad cow disease, even after switch to human insulins.
Another interesting story on insulin discovery.
The woman resembles my great grandmother!!
The U-80 is 1c more expensive that the U-40
David Godlis:
Quoting the grauniad:
This picture, of a woman outside a drugstore, is typical of those photographs, which are collected in a new book, Godlis Miami . The woman in her Jackie O shades inhabits both the confected glamour of the place that Godlis had known as a child, and the harsher day-to-day – discount insulin and cartons of smokes – of how it was turning out.
I think we can all rely on the grauniad to turn a good phrase. My wife stiff smokes the modern menthols, no lemon though, just a short sharp shock as thatcher used to say.
Search for Godlis and make your own mind.
Called T1-11. Still available and used for sheds. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Plywood-Siding-Panel-T1-11-4-IN-OC-Nominal-19-32-in-x-4-ft-x-8-ft-Actual-0-563-in-x-48-in-x-96-in-177189/100080879
The insulin price is obvious, even more so the cigarette price! Though I’m a non-smoker, isn’t the cost of a carton upwards of $60-70 these days?
I think $60 is the minimum, if you live on the east coast packs are over $10 each so I am guessing cartons would be $150+, glad I don’t smoke.
Wow, how prices have spiraled out of control since then!!!
I noticed the price of the cigarettes too. I smoked as a teen and they used to be $3-5 carton. Wow $10 a pack now??? That’s a really expensive habit to have now! I would hope that would stop youth from smoking but I bet it doesn’t.
I started on U-40 (1970) and remember that U-100 coming out was a big deal. I never knew how much my parents paid for insulin or what was covered (my dad worked for US Government so expect we had top health care, heck when I was diagnosed in 1970 I was admitted to the hospital for 10 days!).
Yes, the prices of both insulin and cigarettes jumped out. I was trying though to squint in to the names on the concert poster, Sarah and Brian? FerMe?
Yes, I tried, too, but didn’t recognize the names!
I found a higher res version - I think it is Sarah and Hayim Vershko
Some Venezuelan socialism…at least according to those who claim insulin should be “value priced” (Alex Azar - Wikipedia) in a way that doesn’t value peoples’ lives, or their financial well-being.
