Cute pink pump and CGM, too bad the site isnāt pink as well. I suppose thatās a pdm in her bag.
Actually, this is the 2nd Barbie with T1D, not the 1st.
I think the first one came out in December 2022, if I recall correctly.
@T1Allison has the details, maybe she can share them when she gets a chance.
At first I thought the pink thing on her stomach was a CGM receiver but if you look at the pix in the link it has a tube going from it and an insert on her abdomen⦠But then something is in her purse too. They supposedly worked with āBarbie partnered with Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) to design a doll that celebrates this community.ā But it kind of looks technically not correct? But pretty cool to see it actually and pretty cool in general!
Now if it would only help people learn the difference between type 1 and type 2ā¦
Well, Iām T2DM not over weight on a pump with a CGM and a phone with pump and CGM apps.
@CarlosLuis I know type 2ās can be on a pump etc. Itās just any mention of insulin and everyone only knows type 2. I just recently was talking to a neighbor that when I said I was a type 1 she said her sister was a type 1 too, that she had to take insulin and had to watch what foods she ate. I then mentioned is she a type 1 or a type 2 that needed insulin and the reply I got was that she was a type 2 for a long time before she became a type 1 and needed insulin. She didnāt think she carb counted and didnāt know if she took insulin for everything and anything she ate.
That kind of stuff is frustrating, she could have been a misdiagnosed type 1 but probably was a type 2. She really didnāt know, she just knew she had to watch what foods she ate. She brings treats over and apologized and I said itās fine my hubby eats them, that I could if I wanted to and just dose for them, I can eat what I want, but Iām a vegan so I just donāt eat regular sugar. And that probably just added to the confusionā¦
It just kind of gets annoying sometimes. I know tons of type 2ās here, but there was only about 100 type 1ās 6 years ago, and probably half are kids.
I remember T1DM complaints that their disease needs a new name. The problem is laziness, not just the general populaces but doctors as well using the word diabetes as though that means something specific, All diabetes meanss is siphon, a symptom common to 7 complete different diseases, 4 of which have nothing to do with glucose management.
Diabetes Insipidus are 4 diseases where water is not properly conserved. In DI there is polydiipsia and polyuria with colorless and tasteless urine, i.e. insipid.
Then there are the 3 main types of diabetes mellitus (from the Latin mel - honey) whose full names are:
- Type 1 autoimmune diabetes mellitus.(T1DM)
- Type 2 insulin resistant diabetes mellitus. (T2DM)
- Type 3c pancreatogenic diabetes mellitus. (T3cDM)
There are other DM diseases that are considered subtypes. I disagree, they should be have their own type.
If we use more specific names for our respective diseases there would be less confusion. A similar thing with cancer. Well, that one is worse as there 200 to 300 different cancers.
I know Iām a bit persnickety about the use of vague terms as though they mean something specific, but it goes along with my training and work with electromechanical systems. And donāt get me started about omitting units of measure.
I ran across an interesting site called American Girl. They have a doll sized kit consisting of glucose monitor, lancing device, insulin pens, insulin pump, and more. They have other doll kits, including wheelchair and more. These are accessories for their line of Truly Me Dolls which are 18ā and can look like a 4 to 10 year old child, The dolls are DEI.
American Girl books and dolls have been around forever! I had a bunch of the books when I was a kid (not the dolls because they were too expensive and I didnāt really play with dolls). I might have liked this kit though! Representation matters!
I adored the American Girl books too! A couple friends had the dolls and I loved getting to play with them when I visited. What a cool company!
@CarlosLuis maybe you could pose and come out as a Ken doll?!
I donāt have the look, not even 50 years agoš
I fortunately received the first ever Barbie with Type 1 Diabetes PLUS correctly represented and custom made mini Omnipod and Dexcom!
Iāll give you one guess who made them for me!!
Is that Barbie a virtual you? I mean, T1 and a a love of fast cars.
Oh, I just got a better look at the last picture.
