Hey y’all, long time no post. Life’s been crazy. Finally married my husband on 3/26/24 , so we’ve already been married for almost a year now ( been together almost 10 years too!) . Unfortunately, prolly the best part of last year… because in June I got in an accident that totaled my favorite car ever, then in September my inlaws house burnt down. My father in law wasn’t injured, and their cat survived with no injuries because he was already out, but my mil almost died and they lost their dog. My mil and the cat( who my 4 cats hate lol) have lived with us since October and my fil has been back and forth between the new mobile home and here. My fil has been battling cancer since 2023, and keeps getting so sick we think it’s the end…so overall this whole experience is a nightmare . My mom also ended up on dialysis after having a quadruple bypass in the end of 2023. Basically it’s a shocker I’m not absolutely insane yet .
Even more crazy is me doing something I never thought I’d do, but I got to almost 200 lbs after my car accident and the fire so I started mounjaro in November. I know I’m technically a type 1, but if anyone remembers me, I’ve had a tricky diagnosis. I’m on 5 mg of mounjaro and it’s been amazing. I’m really tired after the shot and very rarely nauseated, but that’s it. I’ve lost 20 lbs, cut my tresiba dose almost in half( 24 to 14 units),I don’t take as much novolog for meals now at all ,and my a1c went from 6.3% to 5.2%. Honestly, it’s making me question my diagnosis again, but I think that’s understandable. I really recommend it if you think you need it for insulin resistance and weight, it really helps! I’m eating better and exercising more, but doing that before did literally nothing! It’s amazing as people say!
Sorry for the rambling, but yeah it’s been some time since I posted here.
That’s why we’re here. So you married your longtime partner and then all this stuff happened with your car, your husband’s parents and your Mom. I mean that’s a heavy load to be carrying. Oh and as a cat person I commiserate with you about your cats hating this intruder into their perfect life. Cats don’t care much for change, “Mrrrowgrrr why she move the sofa?” Scratch scratch.
Reading up on the Mounjaro, this seems to be a T2DM drug that’ll be a good fit for some with T1DM, especially if they also have some of the same genetic variants I have. There’s no medical code for it yet but calling it Type 1 diabetes mellitus with insulin resistance.
Anyway I feel for you and am glad that the Mounjaro is helping you lose weight and decreasing insulin TDD. That alone besides the appetite suppressing will help with weight loss.
Yeah , the cats are something else… Mittens has been through it though with the house fire and he was outside for 2-3 weeks after it, and he used to be indoor/outdoor and very chill and sweet, now he bites . He’s the cutest lil dude, but he’s kinda crazy now and my cats all wanna kick his butt…pic for the cat tax btw:
I think my diabetes on the other hand is kinda complex because I apparently also have PCOS. I’ve read it’s very common in type 1 ladies , not just type 2, but since my diagnosis I have questioned it, I’ve never had severe complications of 1 like dka. I have no auto antibodies as of about 10 years in I had that tested ( but I’ve read you can test negative after years) , but I had no success with type 2 treatment until now, only insulin. I’ve thought type 1 not 2 for years, but I became overweight and insulin resistant in my 30s and I think it’s just PCOS with T1D , but it’s always been complicated. I know I’m not alone there and it’s just how it is lol. I’m just glad I have something that works and I don’t feel like it’s harder on my life.
Yeah, my understanding is that PCOS causes insulin resistance.
My story is that I was diagnosed with T2DM at age 40 with fBG 450 and an HbA1c of 14.5 %. I did respond to Micronase and because of proper diet and exercise had to be weaned off because of hypos. I was able to have near normal to normal BGs for 10 years. The it progressed. Over the years began Metformin to the max dose, added Lantus and now on a pump. My last HbA1c was 5.2%, but the next is going to be “WHAT! Exclaims my endo. Me, “Prednisone!” That’s for a different problem, but definitely causing BG management problems. And weight gain in the gut.
It’s possible that I had very high BGs for some time before diagnosis. This likely accelerated burning out my Beta cells from overwork.
That’s why it is so important for those with pre- diabetes or early stage T2DM to take it seriously and be uber compliant. Functional Beta cells are way better than exogenous insulin , well you’d know that, right?
If there’s typos it’s because I’m attempting to pedal of a prednisone spike so I can eat lunch. 219 to 166.
Mittens is beautiful! I hope the pack grow to each other.
You’ve had a rough year, but congrats on your marriage! Congrats on your weight loss. It isn’t an easy accomplishment when insensitive to insulin. The best thing for me to improve sensitivity to insulin is exercise, walking, running, biking or whatever your body and lifestyle can manage. Keep up the great progress!
We love Tuxedo cats. All of ours get the surname Maghee from the 1st who had a lightening streak across his face. Our 3 are all Tabbies but my mistress Sheelah is a tabby tuxedo girl.
Congrats on the marriage!
Also congrats on the weight loss. My new Endro put me on Monjaro last week. (I started it Wednesday.) Do you have any tips on it or what to expect?
That all sounds so rough all around. I hope the cats will grow to like each other too! If you haven’t tried it, Feliway is worth a shot. I use the Optimum version for my cats.
Our two cats grew up together (pic of them as kittens below – Miku and Ghost). They are about 6 years old now. Miku had to have some teeth pulled last year, and when she came back from the vet… Ghost acted like she just didn’t know her, hissing and growling. Not for a few days, or a few weeks, as is common enough. It took four months, anxiety meds for Ghost, and constant Feliway. Now we’re just down to Feliway, and they almost act just like their old selves again. I do notice when the Feliway runs out though, Ghost is much nicer to Miku when the diffuser is working!
My biggest advice is drink plenty of water, maybe add electrolytes of some sort once a day ( I get gatorade zero packets) and get in like 70-100 grams of protein a day. I only get occasional nausea, but other than the fatigue on the day after my shot, I’m fine.
Sorry to double post, but my father in law passed away on Friday, he’s free of the pain he’s been suffering for the past few months for sure.
I’ll never forget how he was very nice to me and he worked at a church run thrift store and would bring me diabetes supplies that they got donated. I only got one truly useful freestyle freedom lite meter ( unused and nothing was expired!) , that I’ve used for a back up at least a few times… The rest of it has often been older than me and/or way older than my diabetes … But his heart was in the right place. We always kinda picked on each other, but I know it was out of love.
My inlaws have been great people, I got really lucky. He had his issues, like being extremely picky and stubborn, but I felt like I’d do my best to meet his standards when getting him food and stuff. My other favorite memory was once before Christmas one year , I went to the gas station and they had a pack of 2 half pound peanut butter cups. He was a huge fan of Reese’s anything, so I got him those and told him to cut them up like a pie and savor them, since they were huge … Well he did not follow that advice and ate them both in that one night. He complained about his belly aching later before bed and I warned him , but he didn’t listen lol.
