I’ve read another topic for JANUVIA here, but that was back in 2023. My A1C is terrible, and I’ve been working with a clinical pharmacist who has been helpful in improving my results. However, the last 3-4 months have been particularly challenging. Today, she prescribed JANUVIA in the hope that it would help stabilize my blood sugar levels.
Apart from the high monthly cost, I read the warnings stating that individuals with type 1 diabetes should not take it. Additionally, the potential side effects of pancreatitis are a major concern for me.
One person from the 2023 discussion mentioned that their endocrinologist had stated that diabetics with non-functional beta cells should not take Januva as it would be ineffective.
Has anyone had any experience with JANUVIA? The more I learn about this drug, I’m questioning why my clinical pharmacist would prescribe it.
I am type 2 and was prescribed Janumet which is a combination of Januvia and Metformin. It DI absolutely nothing for me except empty my wallet. At the time it was brand new and tier one. After 90 days I told my doc, no mas- no more. Shortly after that I began once a day Lantus while continuing Metformin.
If you still have some functional Beta cells left it might help. But it might accelerate their decline, not from immune system attack but over work.
The 2023 post you mention might have been mine? I did decide to start Januvia and have been taking it for about a year and a half. My endo prescribed it based on my c-peptide level saying that it has shown to protect Beta cell function. I know it’s typically for T2 but I trust my endo and figured I’d give it a try. I have not had any noticable side effects (diagnosed T1 in January 2023 at age 57). My diabetes progression has definitely not been linear. I continue to be in a honeymoon phase - went on long acting insulin last fall in October but then stopped mid-January due to good BG numbers. So, I guess I would say that Januvia has not harmed me and possibly has helped prolong my honeymoon phase.
