As my educator and I refine my pump regime (and notching some above 70% time in ranges), I sometimes end up with bolus estimates above 25 units, never more than 30.
Is there any way to override the built in limit of 25? I understand the need to make sure some people do not over bolus, but I need more. And the percentage of times I remember to rebolus the overage is maybe 10%
I just saw missed an extra 4 units I was called for at breakfast, and I peaked more than I wish I had.
I’ve bounced all over the menus and cant find a setting. I will call support (they have been awesome here in Canada) but thought maybe someone here knew.
I am not 100% sure this would work, but I think it would? You would enter two boluses, the first being extended and the second being delivered immediately. Not perfect, but it would at least mean you can do all the steps pretty quickly, instead of waiting for the full 25 units to be delivered then trying to remember to enter the second bolus after!
Enter your first extended bolus.
a. Enter your 25 u bolus.
b. “Confirm Request” as usual.
c. On the “Deliver __ u Bolus?” screen, tap “EXTENDED.”
d. Set the “DELIVER NOW” percentage to 0% (or as much as you want delivered before you can do step 2). Set the “DURATION” to 15 minutes (the lowest it will go).
e. Confirm the extended bolus.
Once the “Deliver Now” portion of the extended bolus has ended, you can enter another bolus for the remaining insulin you need, as usual. It should deliver even though the extended bolus is still delivering the first bolus.
Another alternative would be to use U-200 insulin instead of U-100. You half / double the values (as appropriate) in the profile but the 25U max becomes 50U of insulin.
With those high boluses, how long does a cartridge last?
I’d love to try U-200 but last time I checked and asked my doctor, it’s not available in Canada (but thankfully the costs here are less astronomical). I really wanted that when I was on Omnipod and only had 200 units per gizmo, another plus for the Tandem taking 300 units per cartridge.
I’m now about 118 units per day so its 2 days and a few hours.
I did recently try doing a manual cartridge refill (likely not recommended, eh?). one time it worked fine, the second it seemed to get clogged and I went sky high.
I’m at around 100 units per day so I get about 6 days per cartridge (with U-200). Medicare would pay 100% for U-100 (vials) but since U-200 is only available in pens, I must pay for it. Here in Colorado, any insulin is max of $35 per month.
I successfully refilled cartridges many times when I was using U-100 (I haven’t needed to do it with U-200). I go through the complete change procedure except only fill the tubing with the minimum (10.2U) and skip the fill the canula step.
