FreeStyle Libre readers Nov 2017 – Feb 2023 are recalled for fire hazard

There’s a class 1 recall of Abbott / Libre readers. I hadn’t seen this before.

“Abbott is recalling the FreeStyle Libre, Libre 14 day, and Libre 2 Flash Glucose Management Systems because the systems’ reader devices, which use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, may get extremely hot, spark, or catch on fire if not properly stored, charged, or used with its Abbott provided USB cable and power adapter.”

The actual date of the FDA notice below is April 6, 2023; not June 4th.

Hat tip to DiaTribe where I saw this.

@bkh Yea Omnipod has that problem to, they just notified customers that if you notice the issue to contact and they will replace at no cost. but they are not hole sale replacing everyone’s.

My wife brought this to my attention and, not being a ‘user’, she thought it meant that my arm was going to catch on fire. I use my iPhone, not a reader, and it’s not a Samsung, so (hopefully) not going to be an issue.

This seems to be a recurring theme with a variety of lithium ion batteries. Definitely a technology that still needs some work.
