Discussion of Government Response to Covid-19

If she also did it, take her down too! Just like how the Dems actually hold all our people to a much higher ethical standard, to our detriment sometimes—see Al Franken for an example.

Oh yeah, Democrats are the party of ethics. Morals too.

No, people called him racist for using unnecessarily inflammatory language around the virus and immediately talking about needing to close the Mexican border despite its irrelevance at the time.

I’m out of time to educate you. I sincerely hope one of these days you take the time to educate yourself. Good luck.

Again, this was ineffective because returning citizens were a much larger threat than tourists. No screening was implemented for citizens… because they didn’t produce tests fast enouch.

@jag1

Yes jag, it is your very biased opinion.

It has been documented in the literature that the Wuhan Virus is heat sensitive, especially on environmental surfaces. On environmental surfaces small increases in temperature commensurately diminish the sample’s viral load, making it less infective. What is wrong with the President of the United States saying what has been shown to be true in the medical literature?

This, in fact, is true. The risk of infection and/or death from the Wuhan Virus is pretty low due in great part to people taking the recommendations of the CDC. The flu has a far greater risk according to the numbers. " During the 2018- 2019 season, the CDC estimates 16.5 million people went to a health care provider for the flu and more than 34,000 people died in the U.S. The prior season saw 61,000 deaths" from that bastion of Conservatism USA Today. Compare that with the latest Wuhan Virus numbers of 250,000 cases resulting in 250 deaths in the US. Certainly that will get higher, but it’s got a long way to catch up with the devastation of the 2018-19 flu outbreak.

I don’t know anyone who has contracted Wuhan Virus much less died from it, and I bet you don’t know anyone with it either. There is reason for that–the risk at this time seems low, due to the extraordinary measures instituted by the Trump Administration.

Yes, it is unusual to die from the flu. And this is a bit different. And in some ways it’s easier, due to the extraordinary forces being applied to it. And in some ways it is a little bit tougher. It is probably more contagious than the flu. That’s why the extraordinary measures are being employed. But we have it so well under control. Yes, the virus is itself is under control because of the Trump Administation’s extrordinary measures. It is my opinion, when all is said and done, the Wuhan Virus statistically will prove less damaging medically than the flu. What is far more damaging has been the way it’s been politicized and allowed to destroy our economy.

Yes, it will go away like a miracle, through our hard work and sacrifice. And it is going to get worse before it gets better, at least that’s what the experts say. I guess we’ll just have to see what happens. But shame on the President for trying to put this in historical perspective to calm the American people. Orange Man Bad. He should have told us that we’re all going to die from the virus.

Thank you for making my point. I think what he said is that the “democrats politicizing the coronavirus” is their new hoax. And from the way it is working I think he is right.

This is the truth. If you’re healthy, you will go through this process of containment and probably never be infected. And if you are infected but otherwise healthy you, probably nothing will happen to you and if you get sick you’ll recover.

Yes, anybody who needs a test will get it. That means recommended by their doctor. I hope it doesn’t become an “on demand” test, otherwise we will be overwhelmed.

We are prepared for the virus medically about as well as we could be prepared for any pandemic. What we were not prepared for was the economic and social fallout, primed mostly by the left and its media arm.

Yes, many many people do just get better because they have no symptoms or very mild symptoms. This seems to be the norm. And because they are asymptomatic they go to work, but they get better.

This is the left’s biggest spin. What he said was that he does not take responsibility for the system that was put in place before his Presidency. And he further said, and Dr. Fauci said, that now a public-private partnership exists thanks to the President that can handle the testing problem. And, contrary to what you keep saying, the testing problem has been solved because anyone who needs a test can get one.

Obviously, his Administration knew about the risk of Pandemic. But I’ll bet very few if any people in the general public though about this. It is my opinion that you are really grasping at straws on this one.

The truth is that Trump reorganized pandemic threat into the Pandemic Strategy Initiative, no loss of scientists, and most of the staff was reassigned. Savings came from this consolidation. And to add to the previous point, the Press release in mid 2018 did specifically mention the possiblities of a global pandemic, proving that his Administation was “thinking about it”. And you complain about the term TDS? “that idiot trump” is how you refer to OUR President? idiot trump, with a lower case t? Give me a break.

The “random idiot foreign minister” was a direct microphone for President Xi. He made outlandish statements about our military that was on direct order from Xi.

And Sen. Tom Cotton, is a scumbag? Be careful, he’s a former Army Ranger. And isn’t it curious that the "high security biochemical lab in Wuhan, China, was in the same town as where the outbreak started? Quite a coincidence if not true. And a doctor at that lab sounded the alarm about Wuhan Virus, was silenced by the government, and later died. Maybe he died of Wuhan Virus, maybe not. We don’t know because China will not tell us the truth.

It is perfectly reasonable to think this is an attack from the Chinese government, meant to destabilize us and much of the world, in order to rebuild their economy as the preeminent economy in the world and execise more power than they already are? If you don’t even entertain that idea you are very naive.

It is CDC protocol to name a virus from where it originated, in order to easily differentiate them. Wuhan Virus is NOT racist. In fact, even suggesting that it is, is racist. Please, I beg of you, quit the racist BS, it’s getting old.

There was no magic wand to wave to test people earlier. Covid 19 didn’t exist until December-January on this planet, in humans at least. The assertion that trump had some magic wand to wave that he refused to is nonsensical. Further perpetuated by fake news like the WHO tests fallacy. Obviously we’re all scrambling to figure out how to respond to this as a nation, or even as a civilization. Slinging mud at the president isn’t remotely helpful whether it’s trump or if it had been obama or anyone else.

You would’ve defended any of his actions, and indeed defended the action of refusing who tests when we didn’t realize the administration had effectively dodged the question.

You’ve yet to acknowledge any misstep he’s made. It’s astounding to me this type of blind allegiance where whatever action was taken had to have been right.

No political leader or anyone for that matter is always right.

Yes, if the administration was aware enough that they implemented a travel ban, then regardless of whether testing was available, people returning from that country should have undergone immediate quarantine.

Italy has had over 600 deaths today. We’re about a week behind them.

The administration was late in action on all counts.

If he’d implemented a mandatory quarantine you guys would be howling about him tearing families apart and putting kids in cages again.

I’m not saying there has been no missteps. I’m not saying there is no room for improvement in hindsight , but somewhere along the line everyone who shares your worldview decided that absolutely everything he does is 100% wrong, and that’s incredibly unhelpful at this point

Based on analysis of the viral genome, scientists reject the hypothesis that the coronavirus originated in a lab. Some non-Chinese scientific sources:

That’s unlikely, given that the virus probably originated in wild life, rather than in a lab. I would also expect the Chinese government to be less clumsy than starting the outbreak in one of their own cities. The Chinese government and its cronies are to blame for not closing down those awful wet markets and for trying to cover up the outbreak of the virus.

I hope this whole crisis has the opposite effect. This fiasco should backfire massively on the Chinese government. The world economy is already way too dependent on these authoritarian guys.

Acknowledge one.

Anyone who did this would’ve been silenced pretty quickly and look like a fool now. Properly educating the public about the risks can make a big difference.

Never mind that that is a dramatization and references other genuinely horrific actions by this administration. No action whatsoever was the wrong move. Period.

Again, infected tourists present a much lower risk to a community than citizens returning from China. As it was, the travel ban was weak. Chinese citizens are required to get a visa anyway, so it’s not like they could run out and hop on a plane.

That’s where the term TDS comes from. When the left is so filled with hatred that they dismiss everything someone does right into a different narrative of them doing things wrong.

The right generally isn’t afflicted with that. I generally disagree with Andrew Cuomo’s policies the majority of the time but I can sit back and watch his daily press briefings and say “hey there’s a guy who’s doing his best to rise to a very difficult occasion”. The left can’t do that.

I’m not really sure why you feel qualified to say that I can’t acknowledge when a republican is trying his best. Just because someone tries their best, doesn’t mean they didn’t make an error.

Well it’s very easy to see in hindsight. Yes stronger travel restrictions might have helped, a larger strategic reserve of medical supplies might have helped, but it’s not like that was entirely up to him that’s developed over many years… hindsight is always 20/20… the real question is could he reasonably have expected to have done anything better? His actions were a lot swifter than obamas during H1N1 or Ebola… does that mean Obama did everything wrong? No it means he got luckier…

Trump (and Obama) surrounded themselves with top experts and made decisions based on resources And options available under expert consult just like any leader would be expected to do

Ok your turn… name something he’s done great

I think Fauci was the perfect man for the job. The administration chose him, and I think it was the best move they made. I’ve already said that though.

I also think that while they acted way too late, they have had an aggressive response since Italy’s numbers blasted out of control. They were just way behind the curve at that point, but I think they’re trying and that counts for something.

At this point, the biggest thing they could improve is the messaging to the public- a strong consistent message about how they’re handling the crisis that isn’t “we’re awesome.” And of course, the tests. Which I very much believe they’re trying their absolute best to create/streamline right now.

I also think they should enact the law that allows them to require US companies to manufacture much needed medical supplies. They are behind in this regard and that is a major problem.

I think it might just be a tad unconstitutional to require a private company to manufacture a specific type of product. Thankfully, we have a free market in which private companies are standing up without the government’s boot on their neck.

“Defense Production Act, passed by Congress in 1950 during the Korean War, allows the president to expand production of the materials for national security purposes.“

We’re facing the potential death of millions of citizens and our health care staff in the process. Multiple people have said we’re at war with the virus.

Health care staff need protection.

Yes they do, which is why I applaud cutting red tape like allowing industrial n95 masks (which are exactly the same) to be approved for medical use…

Why did we have to wait for an emergency to start using common sense?

The problem with just ordering businesses to make things is it doesn’t exactly work that way. Ford doesn’t have ventilator factories, they have car and pickup factories. It’s not like they just push the red button when ordered to do so and their entire supply chain and factories are rebuilt to make a completely different and completely unrelated product… so it’s practical application is pretty limited.

Luckily as doc said it’s in all their interest to do what they can, I just don’t think any “order” to do so would be particularly helpful in that pursuit

Except it can, when the will is there.

British companies have formed three teams, led by aerospace engineer Meggitt and carmakers McLaren and Nissan to pursue the rapid production of ventilators.

That sounds like a great idea. I believe cdc’s most recent guidance is to use anything you can.

Yeah in Washington state they’re asking anyone who can sew to chip in and handing out the fabric
