Omnipod 5 100mg/dl goal... when and how?

I just stumbled across a new-to-me greyed out selector for 100mg/dL target in my Omnipod app. I don’t think it was there the last time I looked (but that may have been months ago before an app update.)

If I try to select it I’m told that “Your current Pod does not support a target glucose value lower than 110 mg/dL.”

Is there a release date for the 100mg/dL target Omnipods? Googling shows me corporate press releases talking about this as a future option but I don’t see any dates.

Those pods are being distributed in the US now, but it depends on your supplier. They’ll use up the old ones before shipping the new. As I understand it, pods manufactured in or after January 2026 are compatible with the new target.

Consider yourself lucky. In Canada, Europe and Australia, we don’t even have the app yet.

Has anyone had a chance to try the new pods with the new algorithm and 100 target? I am extremely curious to see if it’s any real improvement because the original omnipod 5 is pretty lackluster for me in auto mode

Looks like the 100 mg/dL option is rolling out with the updated Pods. The latest Omnipod info says compatible Pods are already shipping and should appear in refills through the summer of 2026. The app update alone won’t unlock it if you’re still using an older Pod

Yeah it’s also supposed to be an updated and more effective algorithm in auto mode with the new pods… I hope that’s actually true

Because the algo is in the 'pod, not the app; the app isn’t required, just the 'pod.

I hope that’s the case. I’ve discovered that I, personally, while considering myself an extremely analytical person.. have been absolutely suckered into placebo effects many times with new things

It looks like the 100 mg/dL target has already rolled out. The catch is that it requires the newer compatible Pods. Omnipod says Pods with the new algorithm are identified by a black R1 marking on the box tray lid. Older Pods will still limit you to 110 mg/dL and above.

While I appreciate the BG goal of 100 in the Omnipod 5, my DIY AID allows settings down to 72 (I set 95 as my goal), so don’t find a 100 setting as “earth shaking” (though a drop of 10 points is good to have available). For those with O5 experience, do the other changes to Insulet’s algorithm warrant further review? My understanding is it will stay in “auto” mode longer (not sure of the meanng of this), provides more aggressive treatment of sticky highs (anyone know the “how” of this?), and improved alarms. Are there other features making it worth further investigation?

I’ve only been on the “current” (110-goal, not 100-goal) Omnipod 5 for a couple months but it has NEVER dropped out of auto mode except when I’m changing sensors. Even when I have a wacked-out sensor delivering total junk numbers, it stays in auto mode.

I sure would appreciate it more aggressively treating sticky highs. Right now I basically rage bolus with the bolus button on the app. But realistically a set of “more aggressive correction numbers” could have kicked in long before I rage bolused.

My CDE told me that there will be a “black dot” on 100mg/dl goal Omnipod 5’s. Below’s a picture where you see a little black dot above and to the right of Insulet brand name on box, and there’s a small “R1” inside the black dot.

That’s true. The R1 indicates the pod works with the “enhanced” algorithm.

But the target change is separate from the algorithm change.

According to Insulet, you can use the new target with pods manufactured in 2026 (and if you update your app). They do not need to be R1 pods, just 2026 pods.

In my view the only real news is the hopefully improved algorithm… 110-100 doesn’t excite me at all

Ahah! In my latest pharmacy fill I got a box of Omnipod 5’s with a manufacture date of 2026-05-08 and with the black circle with a “R1”. I will “skip the stockpile rotation” and will try a R1 out starting tomorrow and see if it has 100 as a goal and how the new algorithm works.

OK I jumped ahead in my stockpile to use a “R1” Omnipod 5 with the goal set to 100. I had one bad day (75% in range) and two 98+% in range days. Which is kinda par for the course.

I just picked up two boxes of Omnipod 5’s from the pharmacy and neither of them have the “R1” on them so I think it’ll be a while before my pharmacy consistently gets me R1 Omnipods and then it’ll be a while before I work through my stockpile (3 months or so) before I’m consistently using R1 Omnipods.

Am I getting it right, the medical device manufacturer is allowed to just “let” the supply chain choose which prescription medical device a user gets? Seems odd that device users are at the whims of the supply chain, vs the doctor/patient team that supposedly gets to select what medications are prescribed by the physician. Seems to stand the industry on its head.

That’s what I do with AAPS as well. It works because the AIDS algo reacts to my excess by holding off on any more insulin (as, indeed, I would were I an AIDS).

I discussed going back to a commercial app a couple of days ago with my medical provider and the feeling was that the commercial apps were not going to get as good a result as I did. This was a 30 minute appointment, so I didn’t get round to explaining how I did it. It may be that the O5 with appropriate (of course) rage would work as well. My AAPS target is 100mg/dL; I wouldn’t go below that because I use a G7 and it simply isn’t accurate enough to make me feel safe.

The two firmwares are not different unless the prescribing doctor tells the patient to change the target.

I guess it depends on where you live but in the US the supply chain is not under the control of anyone so far as I can determine. The manufacturer (Insulet in this case) sets a “sell by” date, which is, for Omnipods, based on a “use by” date 18 months after the date of manufacture. So if Insulet change the firmware they have to wait 17 months minimum, 18 months maximum, before they can be confident that the supply chain is flushed. A month is 30 days.

I guess Insulet could have changed the firmware and not changed the app or told anyone for 18 months, but then they couldn’t have told the physicians either, or the supply chain, or, these days, the FDA; no one can keep a secret.
