Daisy Mae's swimming BG thread

michel, i dont understand what you are saying. how many carbs does your son take in order to get back into the pool?

also, just retested and my BG was 128. reset my Temp Basal for another 1/2 hour at 0%. we’ll see what happens. if i get close to 140, i will walk to the pool. otherwise, i am not certain what i should do? as of now i have no IOB except a trickle of my post basal.

Given that he is on MDI, he goes down a lot while he swims so he continuously takes sugar. He takes 15 carbs every 20 minutes. But that is only because he cannot turn down his basal. For you, you would need a lot less to nudge up.[quote=“daisymae, post:161, topic:894”]

If you have no IOB then you are not likely to drop much – although some of your insulin before you shut off is still active for a while (for my son, Duration of Insulin Action = 5 hours, but a small % only is left after 3 hours).

If I were in your shoes, I would go in at 128 but check every 15 minutes early on. In the past, you dropped 100 per hour, so in 15 minutes you should not drop more than about 25-30. Based on your last try, your second hour should be pretty stable. Your first hour is the big question.

thx a lot. i am waiting another 15 minutes before i test again. that will bring it up to 2 full hours OFF basal.

and BTW, my insulin duration time is 4 hours (approx)

What is your total time of 0% so far? It’s been about 1 1/2 hours right?

If you get to the pool and are still below 150, take a small amount of carbs to get there and hop in!

I see, you just posted. 1:45 so far. Go for it, DM!

i will be off basal for a total of 2 hours now. my BGs are stubborn and not rising as i hioped they would. but after 15 minutes, i will retest and have a nibble on something. not certain what to nibble on though. UGH.

What is your BG now?

129 after 2 hours off pump basal. should i take some carbs (maybe a bite of a Baby Ruth bar?) and walk to the pool?

Yes!

OK then; i’m off to the gym. quite frustrated and nervous, but i’ve committed myself to this experiement and i want to see it through. so, i am looking at this like another learning experience. i REALLY hope it goes well. otherwise i think i should go for more carbs before i set my 0% TB for next time.

i’ll keep you all in the loop. i will document it all, 15 minutes at a time.

thx guys for all of your patience and encouragement and hope. i need direction and you are all great directors.

When you find yourself frustrated by you bg not going in the direction you want, in our case we often treat with 4-5g of sugar, early on, to nudge it in the right direction when lowering basal and trying to get it up. Worth a shot tomorrow, if you find yourself in the same situation.

That is also just what we would do  Good luck! can’t wait to see what you get.

How did it go?

YAHOO !!! !!!

here are the stats:
12:15pm BG 80, turned pump down to 0% temp basal for 2 hours
1:30pm BG climbing 130
2:15pm 131 BG then bite of candy, then brisk 15 min walk to pool
2:40pm pre-swim 158 (which i believe is from the mini bite of the Baby Ruth Bar right before i left my home)
3:15pm 1/2 hour into my swim, BG 131
3:45pm 1 hour post swim, BG 106

WHAT I LEARNED TODAY:
1st of all, i think that i nailed it for a 1 hour swim;
2nd of all, i saw a radical difference between a 1.5 hour 0% temp basal and a 2hour temp basal.
3rd of all, i dont have to be so afraid of either spiking or crashing as long as i am testing every 1/2 hour. i felt strong and comfortable the entire swim.
4th of all, i dont know yet how to manage a 2 hour swim, but if i can push myself and not give up in frustration, i will figure it out eventually !

total time off of pump (including 2 hours at 0% temp basal) 3hours 30 minutes. gave myself 1.2 units of “compensation” manual bolus insulin, followed by a brisk walk home. also, was very well hydrated the entire swim as well as before and after. slightly sore but in no real pain. just a good strong swim.

Goal: would like to achieve more of a flat line, but i am guessing that it will come with time and tweaking.

you guys are the BEST. your encourgament carried me through this every minute of the way!!! thank you sooo much.

please leave all comments for me so i will know your opinion about this accomplishment. its progress, not perfection. and the endorphin rush is awesome and then some.

Such GREAT news! On the road but will reply further later!!!

This is wonderful stuff! Just about 50 points of drop.

And if you kept swimming, I would not be surprised to see you not keep dropping. Once that basal has flushed out of your body, you can keep going without dropping!

Here is a recommendation:
Hang with your formula for a few days. Get comfortable that this can happen over and over again. After a week, then maybe you should tinker with it a bit more.

Now carb up, DM!! That will help prevent you from dropping low tonight!

Happy for you!

DM,
You might consider cutting your basal down tonight when you are sleeping.

Really outstanding!

My thoughts:

  1. The candy bite push was a good move
  2. Only 50 drop in first hour, huge progress!
  3. Were you tired at the end of the first hour? If not, why not taking a small bite of carb, then go on?

Really awesome :+1:. it is great to follow the whole thread and see you progressively move in – thrilling!!!

thanks. last night i went low in the early morning hours (54) and i had a really hard time getting my BGs back up so i could eat my bfast. maybe something like 10% over 6 hours? from midnight to 6am? uncertain. what do you recommend?

this exercise thing is a lot of work !!! i feel like i need a PhD

i was exhausted after yesterday’s 2 hour swim. but i did bring my candy bar with me in case i had the energy to continue. yesterday’s swim was long and hard. much faster pace than todays.

Well done, @daisymae! Way to stick with it! Enjoyed reading what you’re trying and learning. And especially to see your victory at the end!
