Daisy Mae's swimming BG thread

post swim all has been great; so far, so good. leveled off at 91 pre-dinner. had fish and lg salad which only requires coverage for 10grms (.1 units), so having very little IOB feels safe. (how low could i possibly go that a piece of chocolate wouldnt fix ?)

thats not too complicated at all. but what if i end up wanting to swim longer? as long as i am in the water, i am disconnected from my pump. but i must say that maybe 3 days/week, i only want to swim for an hour or so. a 2 hour swim is a lot (at least to me). then perhaps that formula would work well. of course, i will only find out if i give it a whirl. also, i think you hit the nail on the head; i think that the Ucan bar is f-ing me up, bringing me way too high pre-swim. tomorrow i will skip the Ucan bar and see what happens. the only thing is, i like to have some kind of fuel in my body for the workout. perhaps i should try having a larger breakfast and then not having any IOB for the swim???

anyones thoughts on this strategy?

You said you donā€™t take any insulin for the UCAN, is that right?

yes, thats right. i take 0 insulin. no bolus at all. like to have 0 units of IOB for my swim.

Then try 0% basal for 1 1/2 hours.

If you skip the UCAN, you will start lower. Thatā€™s what you want to get to eventually (starting lower). But until you get the basal figured out, that higher start is a bit of a safety net for you.

thank you !!! none of these men can grasp this concept, it seems. my husband thinks i look sexier than ever, and weā€™ll be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary June 6th. (iā€™m 53 and heā€™s 65) and as wonderful as that is, that he still finds me that attractive, it has absolutely no bearing on how I feel in my body. i dont feel fat at all; i just feel bigger. i am a bigger version of myself. i prefer the smaller version

Yes, after 25 years of marriage, that sounds really badā€¦
:cheeky:

There ya go! Exactly why men and women donā€™t understand each otherā€¦

But congrats to you and your husband!

question for you regarding FUD: why are there so many ā€œco-founders?ā€ how many of you got together and figured this whole thing out? and what does the ā€œFUā€ stand for?

About 30 of us got together to start this place, coming from existing forums that we found too limiting. We were all very close, but also ready to disagree and be open about it.

One interpretation of F.U. Diabetes is ā€œFor Unlimited Diabetesā€. The other one, well ā€“ we all have our own thoughts on that  [itā€™s a common twitter hashtagā€¦] But we do believe, all of us, in being unlimited!

i used to be on TU Diabetes, which is where i met some of you guys, particularly eric. i lost interest in the site b/c i was always being monitored and it made me feel very uncomfortable. i never felt that i could be myself. i also rarely got the feedback i was hoping for. i felt judged.

since i have recently joined this site, i feel so much happier; so cared for and accepted for who and what i am. i feel encouraged. and i do feel i am beginning to get the ā€œunlimitedā€ sense of self, which is a dream come true for me.

MAY 31, EXPERIMENT # 3

@ 12:15pm my BG was 80. i set my pump at 0% basal for 1.5 hours. since i was on the low side, i ate a sliver (really, just one small bite) of my Ucan bar. now i wait.

i am anxious that my BGs will not reach 150/160 pre-swim. what if i only come up to 120? do i go into the pool anyway and then check in 20 minutes or so? how does this work?

SOS. anyone have any thoughts on this scenario? much appreciated. Daisy Mae

Based on my sonā€™s experience, I would go in at 120 but check frequently. After 20 minutes, he is often down to 90 or even lower.

what do you do when your son is that low? is he a swimmer also? does he take GTabs and then just jump back into the pool? or does he have to wait for his BGs to come back up?

He is a swimmer. He takes sugar and jumps right back. He is on MDI. He checks his BG every 20 minutes. He knows exactly how his BG reacts because we have worked on it a lot ā€“ essentially, we did just what you are in the process of doing to figure out how his body works.

when you say that your son ā€œtakes sugarā€ what type of sugar does he take? i always bring my GTABS down to the pool with me. how long does your son swim for at a time?

its been an hour so far at 0% basal. i am waiting another 1/2 hour and then testing again. so far my BG has climbed from 80 to 136. i am keeping my fingers crossed that they will go up a bit more. then i will feel much safer.

He takes hard candy such as jellybeans or skittles. He swims for 1.5 hours to 2 hours at a time, but he comes out every 20 minutes to test.

i LOVE jellybeans. i should have thought of that. i will buy some this afternoon

1 jellybean = 1 skittle = about 0.9gr carb I think.

When you get to about 8 or 9, you start needing 1 more than the number of grams of carb you need.

Swedish Fish make a good sugar treatment as well, each regular size fish is 5g of sugar, and they are hardy and survive the heat better than most candies.

This looks good. When you get to 1 1/2 hours of disconnect, you should be in good shape!
