A HIGH FLATLINE SWIM:

today was an interesting swim. different from most. i can only surmise why i stayed so high, as opposed to my usual drop after my first hour; i hadnt swam in 2 days, and i have been carb loading and stuffing my face silly with really rich and fatty foods (heavy jewish foods, like pastrami and chicken liver and stuffed derma, and french fries. ) maybe that is why my body was uncooperative.

i swam for 2 glorious hours. my body was completely relaxed (after 2 days of rest, of course) and i was able to really swim hard, pushing myself as hard as i could. first 1.5 hours swim, last 1/2 hour with the kick board. now i am having a wonderful adrenalin rush and drinking my chocolate shakes to refuel.

here are the (weird ) stats:
2pm BG 162
2:30 BG 167
3pm BG 163
3:30 BG 151
4pm BG 156 gave myself 2.5 units (to cover both my 4.5 hours of missed basal as well as an extra boost to cover the BG high )
4:30 pm BG 157
5pm 127 (2 boost shakes and some plain yogurt )

i am waiting to hear back from my guru Eric, to figure out the reason for this unusual BG high. (and of course, now that i am home i am coming back down and in target range )

all ideas for this unusual experience welcome (not just eric  )

Yes I think that is definitely the biggest factor. You are getting so detailed in all your stuff now that you can start to think about adjustments based on how long it has been since your last swim and how much you have eaten!

Also, very nice that you only had a 16 point difference from your lowest and highest during the swim (167 and 151), and you didn’t spike afterward. So those are good numbers. A little higher than you wanted, but flat and no spike, so it’s not bad!

i ate a hearty dinner and will eat oatmeal for bfast again tomorrow. i’ll do another 2 hour swim, so i will see how it goes.

i am curious how the rest of my night plays out. my BGs have continued to come down. last test before dinner was 76, but i feel i am going lower. this would be the right time to have a dexcom hooked up. i am testing frequently, though.

I think you will be ok tonight. Just a guess, but 2 days off and all the food you have eaten recently will do a lot to prevent the big nighttime drop.

went down to 35 right after dinner. had some juice and some delicious cookies with jam. now i am back up to 85. feeling much better. stable.

will have a 1.5 C of warm milk before bed.

its an ADVIL night for certain

Are you going TB tonight?

yes. 80% TB for 4 hours. i would do it longer, but i want to eat breakfast before 7am and i want to be closer to full 100% basal by then.

does that make sense to you?

Yes!

80 % TB was a mistake. i woke up in the middle of the night at 170 BG. turned off the TB, corrected and went back to sleep. woke up at 7am at 139. ate some oatmeal and then went back to bed. i always get a little nervous about doing a correction followed by a bolus for a meal when there is already IOB; the first bolus had not peaked yet, so i was kind of stacking my insulin. well, we’ll see how it all works out.

After two off days you don’t drop as much as when you swim on consecutive days.

hopefully today will be in a better range.

my BGs dropped post bfast, as i suspected they would. but easily corrected with a Gtab. we’ll see what happens.

one step at a time.

How many carbs for breakfast?

big bowl of oatmeal and 1.5 C milk. total 50 gms.

YESTERDAY’S NEW EXPERIEMENT:

i think that i have mentioned this before, but i will go through it again. i get terrible neuropathy in my right hand and lower arm. when i swim for over 1 hour, i start getting it and it makes it very difficult to continue swimming b/c i am so numb.

BUT, yesterday i found a solution: after my first 1.5 hours, i use the kick board. i can hold on gently to the board and it doesn’t interfere with my right hand/arm. this kicking swim also increases my strength in my legs and although it is a slower “swim” i can get a lot of bang for the buck out of this workout. and, no discomfort.

just thought this info might help someone. its only taken me a year to figure it out .

A SUCCESSFUL SWIM ; MET SOME GOALS:

have wanted for so long to be able to get into the pool under 130 BG and be able to swim for the full 2 hours. well, today was that day. so, check it out:

1:15 BG 98 walk to the pool
2pm BG 112 took 1 Glucose Tablet and jumped right in
2:30 BG 99
3pm BG 101 took 1 Gtab
3:30 BG 105
4pm BG spiked to 138 dosed 2 units and walked home.
spiked when i got home ( 168 ) bolused for 2 Boost Shakes 1.8 units and by
5pm BG started coming back down (147 ) and i drank my shakes.

first off, this totally blows my mind!!! secondly, there were only 4 people in the entire pool. i had the luxury of my own lane for 2 full hours. Awsome!!!

NOW HERE IS WHAT I THINK IS WHAT MADE THIS POSSIBLE:
OATMEAL for breakfast. seriously. i am beginning to see how the food that i eat impacts the nature of my workouts. in the beginning of my swimming i used to swim so that i could eat more; now i eat more so that i can swim. but the point i want to make, is that i have made adjustments with what i eat and when and how.

ERIC is a large part of this. he is no longer just my insulin/swim coach, he has become my nutritionist as well

its nice to be back! getting ready for the pool on this coming thursday (2nd November).

No, i didn’t drown; been home sick on antibiotics for 10 days. was on a TB of 150%. couldn’t walk to the front door much less the pool. but now i am finally back to my regular self, off all the elevated TBs and took a nice walk this afternoon. its beautiful in Brooklyn and i got to bring out my Fall coat. OMG, I love the Autumn weather!!!

hi to everyone. will be reporting back thursday afternoon. we’ll see what my body decides to do as far as cooperation is concerned. i will take it slow, one lap at a time. i feel like an out-of-shape beached whale  hopefully that will all change and i will be restored to my usual swimming shape, both body and mind.

thank you to everyone who has been posting; being able to to read whats been going on has kept me in the loop, educating me and providing me with a way to not be alone at home isolating and feeling depressed. i love being part of this awesome community.
