ok. i pressed “send.” let me know if you receive it. DM
I got it! I will send you a couple boxes this week.
Now if only I knew somebody in New York who could send me some Junior’s Cheesecake…
well, i live in NY and am nearby the Juniors in BKLYN. maybe i should send you one of their mini cheese cakes???
DM.
PS: didnt go low at all. 2 1/2 hours post dinner, BG 130 (it was 129 before my meal).
Hey, wanted to ask you, I wrote a thread to answer your question about wasted carbs. Did you see this and did it make sense?
https://forum.fudiabetes.org/t/post-exercise-wasted-carbs/?source_topic_id=894
unfortunately, i could not make much sense of it. i am no mathmatical wizard and cannot for the life of me understand why something is wasted and why its helpful.but i totally get the article you sent me about refueling after exercise, though. i found that very affirming, and since all your advice has been affirmed by my mini achievements, that artical just re-re-affirmed my understanding. also, in that re-fueling artical, it gave me more of a leeway regarding how soon i would benefit from it. (up to 1 hour 20 minutes post exercise. that made it very simple for me.
now, lets get down to business. woke up today at 74, ate bfast and 2/12 hours later, was 109. still have bfast IOB. i need to go to sit shiva this afternoon, so i can only swim for 1 hour. do you think it would be ok if despite having a bit of IOB still take the .5 units when i turn off my basal? it worked wonders yetsterday. kept me from spiking and in a somewhat decent target range. i will most likely begin lower today than yesterday, but i will only be off my pump for about 3 hours in stead of the usual 4.5 hours.
please let me know your thoughts. DM
Since it is only 1 hour today, and your BG is running so well today, I think skipping the 0.5 units would be the way to go. But maybe shorten the time you have no basal by 30 minutes. Turn it off 30 minutes closer to the time you get into the pool, but don’t do the 0.5 units.
Let me start with this simple question:
What two things are needed for your body to be able to use carbs for fueling? I’ll give you a hint - one of the things is carbs. What is the other thing?
the only thing i am thinking about is that time when i started at 107 and spiked to 173 before i even hit the pool. maybe i could lesson the amount of the bolus to maybe .3 units?? i just dont want to spike, but at the same time, i dont want to go low.
turning off my basal for 2 hours (as opposed to 2 1/2 hours ) is easy enough to do.
Shortening the time you turn off your basal, you won’t spike as much.
You are running lower today than yesterday, right? Adjust and take a bit less. Whatever number you feel comfortable with.
yesterday my bg was 133 before i turned off my basal and i gave myself .5 units. so maybe today, i should give myself about .3 units???
Today you seem to be running lower…
Taking .3 units might work, but it just seems a bit too much.
But go with your instinct! Being bold is good!
Just checked my bg again. went up to 128, so i gave myself .4 units (just a guess) and turned off my basal 0% for 2 hours. (another guess )
we shall see what happens. between the the IOB from bfast and the .4 units, i have .7 units on board. its a crap shoot. snaything can happen. (and when that guessing is the case, i get nervous, as you know. hopefully, all will work well.)
DM
But with only an hour of swimming it is not as risky, you won’t drop as much as two hours.
ok. makes sense. thx
ERIC, SOS, after 1 hour, my BG shot up to 245. OMG, what should i do???
help. DM
so much for my fear of crashing. i am going to leave for the pool now, right away; and i will hopefully swim it off. and btw, i tested 4 times on 2 diff meters. same bg#s.
F-it. what the heck???
Are you able to read this on your phone on the way to the pool?
If so, take a 40% correction for the high BG before swimming.
YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE THIS: my husband bought regular tonic instead of DIET, and i had NO IDEA. i drank an entire glass of it before getting ready for the pool.
i swam the full hour, and no lowering of my bg. i took correction dose, plus extra to account for the 0% basal, total of 3 units.
my husband was full of oppologies.
so be it. S happens. ( i am just really pissed off ) but now EVERYTHING makes sense.
i wont bother posting much more today, unless i need more space to complain and share my anger (toward my husband) , but i can say this: I DID NOT USE THAT AS AN EXCUSE TO NOT SWIM !!! I AM THE “NIKE” COMMERCIAL
the irony of the whole ordeal is that even at such a high BG, turning off the basal kept my BGs completely stable
needless to say, my BGs stayed in that 240ish range for my entire swim even despite all the water i drank.
any thoughts, humorous or otherwise ?
yours truly, DM
OK. I AM REALLY ANGRY NOW AND EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED.
just 1 tiny hour after i gave myself the 3 unit bolus, my BGs are 77 (all the way down from 220. how is this even possible???
and, i still have 2.5 units of IOB. besides chocolate what do i do?
sending out an SOS.
Yep, there really is no easy solution for that!
Are you not able to tell the difference? I sometimes make a gin and tonic with regular tonic water when I need sugar, and sometimes I use diet. Just depends. The regular tonic water tastes SO much better!
Side note:
I learned a trick where you can check your coke at a restaurant if you are not sure if it is diet. Test your BG. Then put your finger in the coke, dry it off, and test again. If it is a sugar coke, it will show up as a much higher BG on your meter than the first one…
Exercise amplifies your insulin!
This is good - you can carb up now! Whatever you have in the house. Heck, drink some more of that tonic water! This is the way I usually go after exercise, I take enough to be able to eat or drink some carbs and not spike.
2.5 units, how many carbs is that for you, about 40? This is guilt-free splurging now.
i just had a 1/8 of a chocolate chip cookie.
we are leaving for the shiva call, so we will be in the car for a while. i packed a large container of apple juice.
perhaps i will have some more of the cookie.
