Daisy Mae's swimming BG thread

It’s amazing you were able to recover from that. A double bolus is a major change to your normal routine! That was pretty impressive.

A double bolus has never been part of my routine!! HAHA! this morning i woke up an hour later (6am) and did my very best to stay awake while i did my 20 minute pre-bolus. it wasnt easy, but i managed. PHEW.

i am hoping that today will be as wonderful a swim as yesterday’s. of course, i’ll be reporting back later

OOPS, FORGOT ABOUT THE EXTRA IOB EXPERIMENT #1:

well, when i began my swim prep, my BG was high (147) so before turning off my pump, i pre-bolused .5 units. i didnt want to go any higher. i grabbed two bottles of Diet Pepsi from the fridge and guzzled them down in an effort to lower my BG. well, it didnt lower anything, but probably kept me from going higher. anyway, i decided it was in my best interest to leave for the pool a 1/2 hour earlier than usual so i could keep my nasty BGs at bay.

when i got to the pool, my BG was still 147 and, obviously, i didnt need to take any carbs before jumping in. i just threw myself into the water and swam hard and fast, having absolutely no clue as to what to expect. well, within 1/2 an hour, my BG dropped significantly, and it didnt dawn on me to fuel up with more jelly beans bc of the quick rate that i was dropping. OOPS. all went well though. so i’ll just put the info and the lesson in my back pocket and hold onto it for next time.

here are todays stats:

1:10 bg 147 (with .3 units still OB)
1:40 bg 105 ate one jelly bean (1 gram carbs)
2:10 bg 67 ate 3 jelly beans
2:40 bg 84 bolused 1.9 units for basal replacement (only 3.5 hours of ZB off pump)
3:20 bg 80 bolused 1.4 units for 32gms re-fuel

I noticed a pattern in my morning/early afternoon BGs. my overnight is excellent, my evenings are just right, but after 9am, my BGs start to climb (thus the high BG when i started my swim prep). so i did a tiny adjustment to my basal rates and we’ll see how that works out tomorrow. other than that, all is well in the Land of Daisy Mae. (btw, the pool was empty today, but there was that horrid, horrid man there that i got into a brawl with a couple of weeks ago. we gave one another nasty looks from different lanes .)

EMPTY WATERS MAKE FOR A GREAT SWIM EXPERIMENT # 1:

so there was literally only five people in the entire pool today. i had a lane to myself for 1.5 hours. it was magnificent. i totally got into a zone. i felt free, relaxed, mindful, grateful, and at complete peace with myself. i let go of every worry, every fear, every crazy unhelpful and unproductive thought in my head. i was completely unlimited. and now, back at home, just thinking about it all, this is what 2+ (almost 3) years of dilligence and perseverance brought me to (and, of course, you guys were an enormous part of all of that!!!). i have a place for myself that i am not just rid of diabetes, but i am rid of every negative little bug-a-boo in my mind for every moment of my swim; every moment; from the early morning wake ups for breakfast, to the ZB prepping, to decisions about how many carbs i should take and when…things now are becoming second nature for me. i am no longer struggling from fear about my BGs, whether i will go low and drown. i am simply enjoying myself. and its not just the swimming itself; its how i feel about my success. its who i see when i look in the mirror in the morning while i am brushing my teeth. its the mental/emotional joy ( freedom from depression/sorrows) that i feel.

here are todays stats:

1pm bg 95 walk to pool
1:20 bg 103 took 6 jelly beans (6gms carbs)
1:50 bg 88 took 3 jelly beans
2:20 bg 90 took 1 jelly bean
2:50 bg 98 took 2 units for missed basal
3:20 bg 95 took 1.4 units for refuel shakes (32gms carbs)

btw, that basal change that i mentioned in my last post worked out perfectly. i’m glad i saw the pattern and made the change (and it was only a .025 u/h change). that’s about it. i am high as a kite from the endorphins (can you tell ???)

BAG IT OR BE PATIENT EXPERIMENT #1:

today was a brand new experience for me. all throughout the night, my BGs were stellar. at bfast my BG was 90. i ate what i always eat before a swim. nothing seemed out of the ordinary. but when i tested my sugars 2 hours later, i had spiked to 175. dont know why. immediately, i took an IM shot of 1 unit to bring myself back into target. i didnt think that this was going to ruin my swim plans…at least i wasnt going to let it. so even with a whole lot of IOB, i added on to it. what could go so wrong that i couldnt somehow fix it? well, within a half hour i tested again, and my BG was still stuck at 167. so i did what i typically do under the circumstances, i changed my (brand new) pump site and drank 3 bottles of Diet Pepsi. (i’ve never peed so much in my life  .)

as i waited to turn off my pump, my BGs started slowly going back down (phew). and by the time i was ready to start my swim prep, my BG was 122 and dropping. after 2 hours of ZB, my BG was 95 and i left for the pool. i had been watching UTube videos all morning on maximizing your breast stroke and learning better form (again) for a faster swim. (the key is in the kick) so i was all pumped and psyched and ready to put the new info to a test. i planned on swimming harder and faster than i have ever pushed myself to swim. i wanted to swim until i could hardly breathe . i just know that i am going to pay heavily for this later tonight. OMG. i can hardly walk.

here are today’s stats:
1:15 bg 89 ate 2 Gtabs and jumped in
1:50 bg 51 ate 2 Gtabs and waited beside the pool for my sugars to go up (part of me considered calling it a day, but i didnt want a little inconvenience to interfere with my Friday swim. besides, the pool was practically empty (again) and i wanted to make the most of it. so i sat and i waited. after 15 minutes my BG had come up to 63, so i took another tab and waited some more. i was shaky and sweaty, the way you get when you’re low. but i was gonna wait this sucker out. finally, at 2:15, my BG had come up to 86. i jumped back into the pool and swam my heart out, as if this were the last day on earth.

2:15 bg 86
2:55 bg 85 bolused 2 units for missed basal
3:25 bg 80 bolused 1.4 units for 32 gms of refuel

currently i am racing from the caffeine in all the soda i drank and the endorphin rush from my workout. i dont think i have ever typed on my computer this quickly :star_struck: HA!

now i know another new bit of info: i dont have to stop something that i am enjoying just bc of a minor glitch. i can wait it out and resume doing what it is that i had intended on doing. I refuse to let diabetes interfere with living a fulfilling life.

bc of the w/end and the upcoming Jewish Holiday, i will not be back in the pool until Tuesday. but, rest assured, i will face those waters again, so watch out YMCA!!!

Happy New Year to all who celebrate it!

OH WHAT A TERRIBLE SWIM EXPERIMENT #1:

so i have been out of the pool do to a combination of life things, but i went back into the pool today after battling (which i still am) a bacterial infection which is causing my BGs to run amuck. i am on one TB after another, trying to balance things out, but i have not been tremendously successful. but finally i decided that i am not the hapiest camper in the world if i am not in the water. so i decided to just do it.

going in, my BG was quite high, and it pretty much remained that way. after jumping into the pool, i pulled my groin muscle, and i wasnt able to kick without being in excruciating pain. but, silly girl that i am, with all of my conviction, i persevered and continued swimming.

i only swam for one hour, but i really needed to clear my head, and swimming is generally the way i can do it. so that’s my unfortunate experience for today. :disappointed_relieved:

here are today’s (lousy) stats:

1:20 bg 169
1:50 bg 167
2:20 bg 154 bolused a little more than usual for basal replacement bc of need for higher TB basal rate
3pm bg 146 bolused a little more than usual for refuel for exactly the same reason

so, no endorphin rush today; just frustration. but everyone is entitled to a lousy workout from time to time, so i’m gonna cut myself some slack. i dont need to be perfect, just human

Sorry about your day. How much did you end up bumping your basal last night?

For the sickness and antibiotics you are on, you might want to consider both higher basal AND higher IC (actually a lower IC of course, I mean more insulin…).

Great minds think alike; im way ahead of you on this one!!! I found out rather quickly that i needed more bolus insulin for my meals!!! :yum:

as far as my overnight TBs were concerned, i did need a higher TB to carry me through the night. currently i am on 110% and it seems to be working just fine; of course its hard to tell bc i just finished my swim 2 hours ago. dinner will probably give me a clue as to what i will need.

thanks for the support !!!

Definitely!

I hope your groin muscle and your infection are coming around for the better!

due to increasing BGs and higher and higher TBs and corrections and pain that wont quit, my husband is taking me to the ER. my PCP wanted me to have another test for a more specific bacteria to see if i am on the correct antibiotic, as this one is clearly not working.

despite giving myself an IM shot 45 minutes ago, my BG has continued to climb. i turned up my TB (again). oh gosh, i hope this all works itself out quickly. :disappointed_relieved:

no swimming today.

DM

spent the entire morning and afternoon in the emergency room. was tested for everything under the sun, including kidney stones. they found no sign of bacteria at all, and insisted that i discontinue taking the antibiotic.

bc i have so much D neuropathy, they considered that this could be neuropathy of the bladder, and that i see a urologist asap.

does anyone here have such a thing? is there such a thing?

all input gratefully accepted!!! :sob:

So sorry, @daisymae, for another trip to EM. Man, a tough last few months. But despite all this, you have been having spectacular swim workouts!! Talk about a trooper, you are one tough gal!! We are so lucky to have you share your experience and knowledge.

I hope you are feeling better this evening, now that you are off that antibiotic. I don’t have first hand experience with this, but I do know one can be allergic to them. Maybe that is what happened? Take care!!

NOT SWIMMING FOR A WHILE EXPERIMENT #1:

so its been a couple of weeks since I have been in the pool. ugh. I’ve had ER visits, visits to specialists, new medications to get used to, increased neuropathies ( now one in my tummy)

I am planning on being back in the pool tomorrow. I have to say that I am a bit nervous about it, 'cause its been so long. I feel like I might have forgotten how to swim. TRULY. that’s my feeling… obviously not a fact.

so I started by getting ready for my swim, getting all my swim/pool supplies together. ( I have a special “pool” bag ) I figure that will help to put me back into “swim mode.” so far, so good. I am beginning to get excited. I guess its similar to riding a bike; as soon as you get back on, its easy as pie. I am hoping so.

so I was just checking in, keeping you all informed. and I will, of course, get back to you tomorrow after my swim to let you know how it all went. (since I haven’t been swimming, though, I have continued to keep my schedule the same; I wake up at the same time, I eat bfast at the same time, I take a long walk at the same time as if I were swimming, etc.) so, hopefully that will all contribute to an easy transition.

one step at a time…

GETTING MY GROOVE BACK EXPERIMENT #1:

well, I am happy to report that I did NOT forget how to swim  !!! I was well rested and well fueled, and I swam the whip kick all the way without a break.

my only issue today was that by swimming with the whip kick, I intensify my swim, and thus, use up more glucose. I really need to take in more carbs while swimming if I want to swim strong and hard. today I swam for only 1 hour, bc my BGs dropped before my last stretch, and I didn’t have the patience to wait 15 minutes for my jelly beans to kick in.

lesson learned. tomorrow I will know better. I enjoy the hard swims, so I’ll just have to double up on my carbs during my swim.

here are todays stats:

swim prep started at 11am and my bg was 79. I turned off my pump and pre-bolused .3 units. 2 hours of ZB and my BG was 75. I speed walked to the pool, excited to be getting back in the water.

1:20 bg 86 took 2.5 gtabs and jumped in
1:55 bg 79 took 1.5 gtabs, waited 5 minutes then jumped back in
2:30 bg 58 took 1 gtab, bolused 1.6 units for 3.5 hours of ZB and walked home.
3:05 bg 67 bolused 1.4 units for 32gms of refuel carbs/protein

I wanted to mention a silly thing that I did this morning: I keep an alarm on my iPhone next to my bed to wake me up several times during the night (my Libre doesn’t have alarms) I typically will eat bfast between 5am and 6:30am, but I have one of my wake-up times set at 2:30am. well, when I got up to do a finger stick at 2:30, I miss-read the clock and I thought that it was 6:30, so I bolused for bfast. it wasn’t until I was 3/4 through eating that I realized what I had done. I was so out of it, I didn’t even know if I did a correct ICR (I mean, really, who eats at that hour??? ) anyway, I went back to bed, but just to keep on schedule, I got up at 6:30 and had another cup of decaf.

hopefully I will be more careful tonight. eating at 2:30am is not pleasant  ( I mean, maybe if it were something extra yummy, I wouldn’t have a complaint.

Here is the stuff I mentioned to you last night. Next time you are in the 50’s, take a Transcend gel and get back in the water. With 3-4 hours of ZB by that time, your BG will pick right back up.

This stuff is very fast. It’s 15 grams.

You can get them in different quantities. This link is for 6 gels. That might be a good amount to start with.

There are other types of gels that are the same basic thing, you can get whichever one you want. I use Transcend because it is easy to buy from Amazon.
