OMG! LATEST SWIMMING A1c : 4.9%

i have maintained great A1c levels since i have started swimming. never gone above 5.6%, but still, its really nice seeing all that work i put into my D care pay off!!! :star_struck:

will be officially back in the swim of things on Monday the 9th of september. i have really enjoyed wearing normal clothing and not just a swimsuit with goggles and a swim cap ( i even put a little make-up on  .)but i cannot wait to get back into the pool and practice for swimming the English Channel .

hope everyone had a lovely holiday weekend!!!

IN THE POOL AND BACK IN THE GROOVE EXPERIMENT #1:

i had a great swim. the pool was so clean and they had redone the locker room and the showers as well. i practically had the pool to myself, and since swim camp was over after Labor Day Weekend, there were no screaming children to interfere with my getting into the “zone” peace of mind. so relaxing. and the life guards were happy to see me .

the beginning of my prep was a little lower than i had anticipated (73) so i ate 1/2 tab and pre-bolused .4 units. then i turned off my pump. all worked out perfectly.

here are today’s stats:
1pm bg 89
1:20 bg 97 6 jelly beans
1:55 bg 95 2 jelly beans
2:25 bg 84
2:55 bg 93 bolused 2.2 units to cover ZB time and 1.6 units to cover my shakes

i am hoping that this evening goes well. since i was on a “pool break” when it was closed for cleaning, i stopped eating most carbs. i had to lower my basal down to 95% just to keep in target. but, now that i am back in the pool, i dont really know what to expect. i have my TB set to 95% so we’ll see what happens. today’s swim wasnt a challenging swim at all. i figure i’ll work up to that by the end of the week. i swam at a comfortable pace, but not a strenuous one. i gave myself a little extra insulin to cover my Boost Re-Fuel Shakes bc i hadnt used as much energy as usual. hopefully, i made some good decisions  all in all i am very pleased with my steady BGs.

i’ll be back in the pool tomorrow. Yahoo !!!

Eric, those jelly beans are like a nibble of heaven. i love that i can take only 1gm of carbs toward the end of my swim instead of trying to crack a piece off a Gtab. much more convenient and easy to do at the pool.

thanks for turning me onto them. its working out very well.

AN EVENING EXPERIMENT #1:

so last night i experienced a similar drop in BGs as the night before. i was hoping that i had counted my carbs right, but i just tend, sometimes, to eye-ball things. my BG went down to 42. (btw, i have a new passion for correcting a low bg: coconut water, hard pressed. OMG, delicious and fast)

tonight i’m going to repeat the dinner process and see what happens. i didnt need a lowered TB, just enough carbs to bring me back into range. then all was fine. (and it literally happened 2 hours after dinner both times.)

A CRAZY BUT COURAGOUS SWIM EXPERIMENT #1:

an hour before i started my swim prep, my BG was 119, so i had a diet pepsi to bring my BG down. when i turned off my pump i was still 119, so i bolused .5 units and went to ZB.
by 1pm, on ZB, my BG had come down to 102. a nice number to start my swim with. i left the house and dashed off to the pool. when i got to the pool, my BG was 100. i should have taken a bit of advice from my sensor which showed the arrow trending down…and considering that i had been trending down, i could have taken more carbs before jumping into the pool. but i didnt. and, i didnt expect what was to come

after just 1/2 hour, my bg came down to 61 !!! OMG. “quit? or take some carbs and continue?” i chose to take some carbs. i took 5 grams. i figured that would do it bc it was now 3.5 hours of ZB. how many carbs could i possibly need? so i waited by the edge of the pool for 15 minutes, waiting for the sugar to kick in. i was gonna do this and nothing was going to interfere with my swimming! and so it went…

here are todays stats:

1pm bg 102
1:15 bg 100 took 5 jelly beans
1:55 bg 61 took 4 jelly beans and waited
2:10 bg 71 took 2 jelly beans
2:20 bg 87 took another 2 jellys and jumped in
2:55 bg 68 took 2 jellys and bolused 2.2 units for missed basal and bolused 1.6 units for refuel.
3:45 bg 77 drank my shakes.

this was so freaky to me. i couldnt understand why so low today. what the heck was so different than any other day? and why would i keep trending low on hours of ZB???

well, i did it. i was very determined. a little afraid, too, i must admit. but its just a gathering of more info for the next time it happens (and i am certain that at some point it will )

but let me be perfectly clear about one thing: my A1c is 4.9% and my BGs are practically hypo, so the only conclusion i can make is that i am in remission from diabetes. i have found the cure. :sunglasses:

NOT SWIMMING YESTERDAY OR TODAY EXPERIMENT #1:

yesterday i woke up at 2am with terrible teeth clacking shivers and a fever of 103. my BG went up to 286. i turned on a TB of 150% and bolused a correction. my husband and i went off to the ER at Langone NYU and i was taken right away. (well, at that hour of the morning there was practically no one in the ER.

they took tons of blood, a urine sample ,two chest Xrays, and filled me up through an IV with eletrolytes. shortly after my blood work came back they put my (IV) on a broad spectrum penacillian for a bacterial infection. after testing my urine, it came back that i had a UTI. i couldnt believe that somethineg so minor could cause such insulin resistance and flu-like symptoms.

well i was in the ER for about 8 hours. UGH.

needless to say, i am not swimming today. bummer. just wanted to keep everyone in the loop. i am still on a TB and taking Motrin. i am trying desperately to sleep through this, but its difficult when you are so uncomfortable that you just roll around uncomfortably in your bed.
i will keep you all posted.

ANTIBIOTICS AND SWIMMING EXPERIMENT #1:

well, in the past week i have been on the mend from a bacterial infection that brought about a fever of 103, a trip to the emergency room, and on 3 different antibiotics (one of which i am still taking). boy oh boy do they take their tole. my BGs were over 300 no matter how many corrections i did (IM corrections, too) .the antibiotics made me very tired and worn out. but fortunately, i am feeling undeniably better. so, naturally, i thought it would be a perfect time to get back into the pool and into the swing of things.

swimming was harder than i expected it to be, but with all that medication and illness, it made perfect sense. so i just sucked it up and swam as best as i could. my speed was the same, it just felt like every lap took forever. but it was a good swim, and my BGs were very cooperative :sunglasses:

here are today’s stats:
12:30 bg 98
12:55 bg 104 (after 2 hours of ZB)
1:15 bg 105 took 4 jelly beans
1:50 bg 100 took 1 jelly bean
2:20 bg 104
2:50 bg 104 bolused 2.2 units for missed basal
3:20 bg 82 bolused 1.4 for 32gms of refuel and peanut butter.

currently on a 97% TB, but will see how the evening goes.

getting my hair trimmed tomorrow in the city, so i wont be in the pool, but i will be back in my swimsuit Thursday. on Friday my husband is coming with me for my Endo visit, and we are going to see the CDE so she can show us how to use the Glucagon Emergency Kit.
(can you believe that in all of my years as a D, i have never once used that darn thing. and i have never even learned how to use it..)

Congratulations on hanging in there like a real champ, @daisymae!!

I hope your trip to the endo and cde are good ones! Learn lots  and tell us all about it!

I’ve never been told either, I just have the instructions on the red box and tell everyone who may need to know, to read them before they use it.

the instructions are too tiny for me to make out, even with my reading glasses. my husband and i are both dumb founded .

WHAT A CRAZY MORNING IT WAS EXPERIMENT #1:

so i was up at 5 this morning. pretty tired, but i bolused for bfast. i fixed up my meal, and lay down on the sofa, intending to just lay there for about 20 minutes. 2 hours later, i woke up. i was so disoriented and confused and couldnt remember if i bolused for my bfast. my BG was 78. anyway, i bolused (again) and waited a bit before i ate. then i went back into bed and lay down before i would start my swim prep.

few minutes passed and i felt like i was crashing. i did a finger stick and my BG was 32. OMG. so i had some juice and went back to bed. i got my sugars up to 58 before turning off my pump, so i ate 2 more tabs. when it was time to turn off my pump, my BG was 110. i pre-bolused .3 units and turned off my pump. but w/in 1/2 hour, my BG shot up to 140, so i impulsively decided to take a little more insulin (.3 units). (BIG MISTAKE; i should have just let it ride out…oh well, live and learn .) needless to say, my BGs came right down, and now i had all this extra IOB before my swim. i didnt know what to expect. i figured i would just roll with it. i had juice in my left hand and insulin in my pump; what more could a girl need ?

anyway, i made it to the pool. my BGs had been coming down ever since that extra bolus, and now my BG was 91. i knew i was still trending down, so i took 2 Gtabs before jumping in. (smart move.) it was a good, hard swim. faster than i expected of myself, but so nice to be in an uncrowded pool, i wanted to take full advantage of it.

here are today’s stats:

1pm bg 96
1:20 bg 91 took 2 tabs
2pm bg 69 took 6 jelly beans
2:30 bg 95
2:55 bg 69 ate 2 jellys and bolused for missed basal 2 units
3:25 (at home) my BG was 90, so i bolused for my re-fuel shakes 1.5 units and took a chill pill. (my husband said that my endorphin rush was killing him.) he asked me to take a look around our apartment, and i realized that he had bought me flowers and put them in vases all around the living room and my desk area. so romantic  .

so hopefully i learned my lesson about laying down while i pre-bolus for bfast, and tomorrow i will stay awake and out of trouble. i’ll be back in the pool tomorrow, and i cant wait to find out whats in store for me!!!

Dang, that double bolus is tough!

Is there a “last bolus” displayed on your pump? The omnipod PDM has the “last bolus”, both the time and the amount and it is always displayed on the main screen. It’s a nice feature.

But congrats on the nice recovery today! And jelly beans! :+1:

i have that and it is a nice feature. if i had bothered to look at it, it would have even been a nicer feature; its only nice when you use it . duh.
