Anyone been there? It’s a system where you see a case manager, not an Endo, and then the Endo joins for the last bit of the appt. to essentially sign off on the plan. That’s my basic understanding of it anyhow. My Endo left his practice, so this is where I’m maybe going to go next. Kind of nervous.
I’ve been using Loop since 2017. In 2023, I signed up with BC Diabetes in order to switch to Omnipod Dash from old Medtronic pumps. I was trained to use pods and was set up with Nightscout and monthly Loop downloads. This saved me a yearly $100 US Apple fee and a montly $6 heroku fee. My endos are Dr. Lee (and… Dr. Elliot). My case manager is Mitra Hosseininejed and she has been great. It really depends on how much help you need. They have over 1000 users combined of Loopers, Trios, IAPS and AAPs
Thanks. I hope my experience is a good one. The idea of having a “case manager” vs an Endo is off-putting to me, but I don’t know if that’s just me appealing to tradition.
Is BC Diabetes a national program or specific to BC (British Columbia?). i live in the boston area and get seen at the Joslin Diabetes center. A wonderful institution that perpetually loses money. It was merged with Beth Israel Lahey and they are now moving towards that “case manager” system - where I see an endo once a year and a case manager for my other visit.
I expect this system will work well if your diabetes is well-controlled, you are pretty engaged with your symptoms, and you are a long-time patient. I like my endo a lot, but it did seem strange to have these 20 minute “check-in” meetings with him twice a year where I wasn’t fully using his expertise. Let us know how it goes.
In US a similar diabetes coaching program is/has been available by Gary Scheiner(author Think Like a Pancreas).
