Art you relate to diabetes

I like to sort through my feelings and find new perspectives through art (an open interpretation). Sometimes it just feels like a passage in a book or a painting expresses what I’m thinking or feeling way better than I can.

Do you have any lyrics or melody of a song, pieces of literature, poems, pictures or videos that just captured some part of living with diabetes for you?

I’ll start!

This lyrics of this song just really frame how I’ve been working on “accepting” having diabetes and striving towards a happier and healthier perspective for my diabetes management:

When it went down, it was so hard to breathe
I gave up everything in a slow fall down to the floor
Life was escaping me, I couldn’t find myself
'Til it was all lost, not anymore
I’m holding on to all the pieces of my heart’s debris
‘Til it’s time
I’ll pull it together and fix myself eventually
And know it’s mine
I found gold in the wreckage, put it on a necklace
Keepin’ it ‘cause I, I, I, I know that it’s mine
I wear it like a message so I don’t forget it
Keepin’ it 'cause I, I, I, I know that it’s mine
I know that it’s mine no matter what I do
I know that it’s mine whether I win or lose
And even though my heart needs to take its time
I know that it’s mine, I know that it’s mine
Facing the change, but it’s still tough to see
At first, I fought it all, I was so mean
I’m still unsure how it’s supposed to be
But taking every day now by the skin of my teeth
Until I learn
I’m holding on to all the pieces of my heart’s debris
‘Til it’s time, oh
I’ll pull it together and fix myself eventually
And know it’s mine
I found gold in the wreckage, put it on a necklace
Keepin’ it ‘cause I, I, I, I know that it’s mine
I wear it like a message so I don’t forget it
Keepin’ it 'cause I, I, I, I know that it’s mine
I know that it’s mine no matter what I do
I know that it’s mine whether I win or lose
And even though my heart needs to take its time
I know that it’s mine, I know that it’s mine

I could go a lot of directions…but this is where I’ll start and what I feel currently…

Andy Grammer’s “Keep Your Head Up”:

Maybe a little bit on the nose but… “A Little Bit Longer” by Nick Jonas

I definitely had a huge celeb crush on Nick as a tween :stuck_out_tongue: He was also the first T1 celebrity I had ever like, heard of, and it certainly helped me feel less alone, back in the day

I always liked the Grateful Dead, and this is my favorite. It lets me know that “I will get by, I will survive”

Touch Of Grey"*

It must be getting early
Clocks are running late
Paint by numbers morning sky
Looks so phony

Dawn is breaking everywhere
Light a candle, curse the glare
Draw the curtains, I don’t care
'Cause it’s alright

I will get by
I will get by
I will get by
I will survive

I see you got your list out
Say your piece and get out
Yes I got the gist of it
But it’s alright

Sorry that you feel that way
The only thing there is to say
Every silver lining’s got a
Touch of grey

I will get by
I will get by
I will get by
I will survive

It’s a lesson to me
The Ables and the Bakers and the C’s
The ABC’s
We all must face
And try to keep a little grace

It’s a lesson to me
The Deltas and the East and the Freeze
The ABC’s
We all think of
And try to keep a little love

I know the rent is in arrears
The dog has not been fed in years
It’s even worse than it appears
But it’s alright

Cows are giving kerosene
The kid can’t read at seventeen
The words he knows are all obscene
But it’s alright

I will get by
I will get by
I will get by
I will survive

The shoe is on the hand it fits
There’s really nothing much to it
Whistle through your teeth and spit
'Cause it’s alright

Oh well a touch of grey
Kind of suits you anyway
That was all I had to say
It’s alright

I will get by
I will get by
I will get by
I will survive

We will get by
We will get by
We will get by
We will survive

We will get by
We will get by
We will get by
We will survive

I’m a Robert Frost fan, and these 2 quotes speak deeply to me:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I – I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.

These woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.

Awesome thread! My favorite song is by Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas - he wrote it for his wife, who lives with a chronic illness similar to lupus, but it’s relevant for me (lyrics abbreviated for space):

Oh what the hell she says / I just can’t win for losing / And she lays back down / Man there’s so many times / I don’t know what I’m doin’ / Like I don’t know now

By the light of the moon / She rubs her eyes / Says it’s funny how the night / Can make you blind / I can just imagine / And I don’t know what I’m supposed to do / But if she feels bad then I do too / So I let her be

And she says, oh / I can’t take no more / Her tears like diamonds on the floor / And her diamonds bring me down / 'Cause I can’t help her now / She’s down in it / She tried her best and now she can’t win / It’s hard to see them on the ground / Her diamonds falling down

Well she sits down and stares into the distance / And it takes all night / And I know I could break her concentration / But it don’t feel right

By the light of the moon / She rubs her eyes / Sits down on the bed and starts to cry / And there’s something less about her / And I don’t know what I’m supposed to do / So I sit down and I cry too / But don’t let her see

And she says, oh / I can’t take no more / Her tears like diamonds on the floor / And her diamonds bring me down / 'Cause I can’t help her now / She’s down in it / She tried her best and now she can’t win / It’s hard to see them on the ground / Her diamonds falling down

She shuts out the night / Tries to close her eyes / If she can find daylight / She’ll be alright / She’ll be alright / Just not tonight

I bought this picture from my favorite hippie photographer who frequents our annual local art fair…

It seems about right to me.
