I’m a 50yr old female diagnosed with type 1 LADA just four years ago after a fall off a ladder at work. I married less than 2 1/2 years ago to a wonderful husband who dotes over me.
Still getting used to this illness and watching my once fit body change for the worse is difficult. I’ve regained the 22 lbs. lost after being misdiagnosed for first 8 months after my fall.
It’s still quite difficult to explain my illness as most people in the south don’t understand that skinny people can have diabetes so I must explain it’s Type 1. I usually get an eye roll every time I ask for special items or even a Diet Coke! But then again I’ve always received some amount of prejudice because of my stature where I’m from. I guess haters gonna hate! I now have an advocate in my mate that proudly defends me and tries to make me feel beautiful like I felt before this diagnosis. I’m lucky to have finally found my King.
I hope to meet other newly diagnosed Type 1 LADA folks in my area, especially in the age range of 35-55. It would be nice to feel like I’m not alone.
