Recently diagnosed with Type 1 May 2019, at 25, while hiking the Pacific Crest Trail which starts at the US/Mexico border and goes all the way to Canada (2,650 miles/4,265 km). Was interesting being a Canadian, and getting diagnosed in the US. Thank God for travel insurance. Pancreas is still alive and my BG control is good. Recently read Dr. Bernstein’s book and found the principles very interesting, and the detailed descriptions of how insulin works very helpful. Haven’t done the diet but even before finding the book I experimented with eating no “countable” carbs at meals (by traditional teachings, not counting vegetables or protein) and saw my sugars just flat line with no bolus insulin. Wondering why I was prescribed to eat more carbs than I ever did before diagnosis… And now questioning everything I was taught at the hospital and annoyed that so much of it was old thinking and no longer the best treatment.
Still processing the diagnosis and tired of non diabetics telling me injections are “no big deal”, but so far having good success with management.
