Trio 1.0, going by the name “Gummy Clusters,” was announced on Sep 15th. Trio is an AID app for iPhone. AID’s receive BG information from CGMs, put that together with known information regarding past and forecast BGs and insulin doses, put it through an algorithm, and use the results to tell insulin pumps what the next dose should be. Trio was built using the OREF algorithm as the basis with lots of modifications and optional settings. It is BG centric, has many settings not found in Loop. My understanding, Trio 1.0 has much if not most of the code updated to the Swift programming language. If you’re contemplating switching to Trio, please subscribe to the Trio Discord channel for information, or the Trio group on Facebook, and read the docs at [https://triodocs.org](https://triodocs.org). Trio can be built using either a browser build process using virtually any computer, pad, or phone (note it is built for iPhone); alternately, it can be built using Xcode on an Apple Mac computer.

I like the new notifications for required carbs to prevent a LOW. I might get tired of it at some point but for now it is a helpful reminder.

I find the carbs notifications on AAPS useful too: it’s always on the home screen. I can ignore it or not.

Because it’s a number it is much easier to grok than the graphs that display the same prediction. I don’t know how the Trio GUI does it but AAPS presents both. They’re both useful but a simple number is, most of the time, easier to understand in an instant than a picture.

Yes, Trio shows carb requirements on the home view plus it will announce the requirements if audio is enabled for it. I like the audio especially when exercising. It just gives a heads up. For me, I tend to ignore BG lows so this helps keep me involved.

I’ve found that invaluable though unreliable… My audio comes from xDrip+, not AAPS, and when skiing I set it to give me the reading every 5 minutes. No headphones; it just squawked my BG, but it was very useful because it avoided me having to worry about low BG.

When driving I do the same thing; reading every 5 minutes. The problem is that we listen to music while driving and audio levels on CD tracks are extremely unreliable. Music recorded for airplay has a constant, clamped, high volume and that drowns out my BG. Older CD tracks by bands who grew up with their music being listened to rather than being background tend to be quieter with higher dynamic range and xDrip+ BG readings come through just fine.

Audio BG is extremely important and should be on a “required” list for any controller (iAGC), but then again 'phone manufacturers should acknowledge that health apps are ours to do with as we please and accommodate that.

Trio used to have that feature, too, but the recent version removed it. I did like it for exercise sessions as well.

The Dexcom app live activity will display your BG if you have Apple Carplay. I’m not sure if it works with Android Auto though. I use Dexcom on iPhone, maybe it works if you use Dexcom on Android. I carry both Android and Apple but I prefer to connect to my car via my iPhone for the Dexcom app and the ability to see my BG on the car display.

@jbowler I think it must depend on how your car is connected, via CarPlay or otherwise. In my and my wifes cars (a 2023 Kia EV6 and 2019 Honda CRV respectively, not sure what versions of CarPlay they have) our music reduces volume or cuts out entirely while our phone apps do their magic talking, playing, phone calls. It may vary a bit my app as well?

It may be a bug in xDrip+. The volume used to reduce but it does not do so adequately ATM.

I don’t think I want to criticize xDrip+ because they are all FOSS; I didn’t pay. But I certainly do think that the lack of standardization in areas like this will certainly kill people, certainly has.

Wow, this sounds like a big update! Love seeing more options for people looking for different AID setups. Definitely seems worth checking out the docs and Discord before making the switch.

Which DIY are we guessing will be live with Mobi (I mean not just beta testing) first? I know AAPS is in beta now and it’s looking like a final release in Dec or Jan…

Thanks for sharing this. If anyone is thinking about switching to Trio, I’d definitely join the Discord or Facebook group and read the docs first it’s a powerful DIY AID system, but it takes some time to set up and understand before using it with your CGM and pump.

Here’s the main web page:

> **[Welcome to the AAPS Documentation — AndroidAPS Documentation](https://androidaps.readthedocs.io/en/latest/)**
>
> Android APS (AAPS) is an open source app for people living with insulin-dependent diabetes. It is an artificial pancreas system (APS) which runs on Android smartphones.

Anyone thinking about AAPS needs to know that the above pages (all of them except those that are device specific) are **compulsory** reading. AAPS has a very strict examination system such that actually getting it to do AIDS stuff, rather than just be a neat non-automated system, requires passing the tests; all multiple choice.

Don’t build the beta unless you are familiar with AAPS; the beta times out and AAPS will force you to rebuild with a non-beta if you are using it. (In fact the general release times out too after there has been a new approved version, but it takes longer.)

And here is what just happened to me:

 ![Screenshot_2026-10-01-17-55-22-84_3eaa31bb2c2a38a1c605d9dc918cf694](https://canada1.discourse-cdn.com/flex030/uploads/fudiabetes/original/2X/9/9a1613abea5c7558a723c829f17663e1b51aeb5b.jpeg)

Yep. My AAPS was disabled. There was absolutely no warning of this. Previously AAPS has warned about rebuilds being required well in advance of the “drop dead” date, but at this point I can’t do anything other than “open loop”, which means no AIDS, and I have to try to remember how to rebuild the stupid program, download it, install it, without losing all the settings.

What is worse, and probably the end of my use of AAPS or, indeed, any free software implementation, is that Google has recently decided that a Google Developer License is required to install self-built applications. Kind of catch up with the Apple money making.

This is a disaster on wheels.
