Scattered and looking for something new.... Been Pumping for 12 Years and have Really known Nothing But

It’s been a really good day…

I did my levemir twice as instructed, I’ve been using my calibration factor all day to guide decisions and to determine whether or not to pre-bolus, and I’ve turned the volume down on my pump, pulled out the reservoir, and suspended it, and it’s been quiet and perfect. I’ll turn up my alarms tonight… and am wondering if I might even hear them. I haven’t heard a single one ALL DAY LONG.

So.

Couldn’t be happier.

So what are you going to do Saturday morning? 12.0 units? 11.5 units? How far off was it?

(Incidentally, 12.0 was my original calculation, but I went down to 11.0 to be “safe”. I know, I am overly cautious with other people’s lives. If it was my own life, I woulda gone for it it. )

I like your “overly cautious with other people’s lives”… wouldn’t change that. I agree if I had the slightest idea what I was doing, I’d be more aggressive. Way more aggressive. And I’m going to need to be because I didn’t do as much eating as I’d like to have today. I do remember this feeling now… that I want more than what I bolused for and just don’t feel like doing another bolus. For now, it means I’m just not eating the second (or 5th) serving… which is not all that bad… but I know myself, and at some point I will eat anyway.

Long answer for 12… I think I’ll do 12.

Thank you for giving me this. I was going to talk about it for months… But you said Friday morning, and that was both specific AND immediate… and also possible. This is good. Really good. :two_hearts:

And now I’ll go to the “mishaps” thread, which is a little less shiny, and tell about my PT today. Because I’ve got questions…

Are you square with the other “tools” you need? The 1/2 unit pen? Is that still in the works?

If you don’t have it yet, in the meantime, you can use your 1/2 unit syringes to do it. Just pull from your pen with the 1/2 unit syringe.

Yeah? It’s that easy? Okay… for both the Levemir and Novolog?? It would be nice to have a half unit option…

I’ll go pull out a syringe and try to figure it out. But tomorrow. I’m not planning on eating anything else tonight, and my brain is pretty fried.

You know… I was going to ask about keeping track of what insulin you have on board and how to calculate a correction when you DO have some… I did mark everything down today, since I know better than to rely on my memory for anything important, but I was a little fuzzy on how to handle a correction. I know this is basic…but my bolus wizard has meant I haven’t had to really calculate things except if I felt I should override…

You have used syringes and vials before, right?

Taking insulin out of a pen with a syringe is the exact same thing, but you don’t need to inject air.

Put the syringe needle in the pen cartridge, and pull insulin out.

You can spit the insulin back into the cartridge and pull it out a second time, to get rid of air if you want. But then you’d have a bit of air in the cartridge, which means that cartridge has become less of a “cartridge” and more of a “vial”. That;s fine, just sacrifice one.

Eventually, it would help to get just 3 things.

  1. 1/2 unit syringes (which I know you already have)
  2. A vial of Levemir, and use the 1/2 unit syringes to dose that
  3. A Lilly KwikPen Junior, disposable 1/2 unit pen, for rapid insulin dosing

That’s all you need.

I can send you whatever you need, but for long term, get a script.

Hey Nicky, glad it’s working well for you, so far. A suggestion to try to remember your basal doses:. Set two recurring alarms on your phone, and edit the label to “take Levemir” or similar. I have one set for my evening dose, which is easy for me to forget.

The other suggestion I have is to use an app in your phone to log injections, and especially, keep track of insulin on board. Here’s the one I’d recommend:. https://itunes.apple.com/app/id1196733537?mt=8 (I’m assuming you have an iPhone?). This app also allows you to set reminders, so my “take basal” reminder is set through this app.

I did this yesterday, and it was great. I have already forgotten to set this evening’s though. I didn’t know you can do recurring…I’ll have to look for this.

Another great idea. I’ll look for it now. I realized I can just make note of it when I log my blood sugar, since I’m doing that anyway, or I could maybe enter the boluses into my pump and use the pump as a “counter” of sorts… since I’m carrying it anyway. Organization is not a strength of mine though, and there’s something about an app that sounds more organized. I’m getting my coffee and looking at for it now. Thanks! :hugs:

I have to read all of that… I posted whatever I posted last night and then ran out of steam and passed out. And slept…all…night…long.

My pump has been quiet since yesterday morning. I can’t even begin to tell you…

Anyway. I did 2 sugar tabs over night, and I did go with 12 units of Levemir this morning. Here’s my 24 hour graph… and keep in mind that I started following the one hour suspend my pump managed to sneak past me before disconnecting, so I had to deal with that and morning coffee…

So maybe 8.0 or 8.5 this evening?

This is your new normal.

It looks just like that now, too… but I’m heading into a banana. Big test.

Pre-bolus. It’s magical.

And a little less impressive… here’s my 24 hour. Most of it was great, but I had a couple of hours yesterday that were rocky. It was nearing time for my next Levemir, and I was starting to think about exercise and didn’t have any idea how to handle it (so was just kind of pushing carbs without much attention), AND both my guardian and Libre were both unavailable. I knew I was starting to rise, but I thought I had caught in time with the exercise… realized I hadn’t when I tested at 270 afterwards. I think being at the end of the Levemir may have contributed to that? Also the carbs, but it was still a disappointingly high number…

How close were you to 12 hours? When it is done, that Levemir will haul ass out the door like a late-night bar pickup early the next morning. No hug, no kiss, no goodbye, it’s just gone.

Wow. Never actually had one of those, but that does feel very much like what happened yesterday evening. It did really hurt on the inside.

I tried looking back but can’t really discern the times. I remember thinking it was near injection time (maybe 7:00??) but that I would take care of it after exercise. I was on the rise. I had a banana figuring I might need it to get through. And maybe a coffee. But I walked with my cousin for like an hour and then jumped for almost 35 minutes— I figured I had it covered.

I almost always rise when I lose my CGM…

So is this the Levemir bail out you describe?? There was drama yesterday in my house revolving around the kittens (drama to me—no one else even knew anything was happening), and it meant that I ended up pre-bolusing 5 units and then not remembering to eat until an hour and a half later. I never felt the low until I tested, but then it was like an HOUR after that where it felt very bad. So I just got locked in and ate for a really long time. I also did a lot of insulin and even tried to jump for a few minutes, but that number just kept pushing… which made me think of your Levemir and it’s no kisses and no goodbyes. The prick.

Oh, and on the libre you’ll find my night and my coffee rise. But that is the rise after pre-bolusing 5 units and jumping for 10 minutes I did the bolus at 8 and am just now ready to go have a second cup. This is how I have to work my coffee in the morning… it’s a lot of wrestling at the front end, and then it all usually topples forward and I end up with too much on board around 2 hours later…

I don’t know, what were the times of the doses? I can’t see the dose times accurately on the CGM.

What is your schedule now? Do you want to keep trying it 2x day, or try the 3x day thing? Have you done enough 2x to see that it will or won’t work?

I think 3x would help resolve the Levi “bail out”.

Or the other thing would be to try both Tresiba and Levi in the morning…

Did 8 am and 8 pm for two days. Yesterday I had it at about 8 am and 7 pm. And I’m currently at 12 units in the morning and … well, last night i did 9 because it felt like i was pushing up.

If two of a thing is enough to establish a pattern, I’d say I’ve gone heavy into a high at around the same time 2 evenings in a row, and that time, possibly coincidentally, is within an hour or two of my next dose of Levemir. I don’t like jumping to conclusions and believe most things to be multicausal (there’s a picture of diabetes next to that word in the dictionary), but let’s do Tresiba.

Yes, this… please.

I am aware of yesterday’s blunder with the pre-bolus and its contribution to the evening high, but every evening has been similar enough to guess i need something else. Or more. Or more better. I also see it in the morning as I’m getting up. It’s subtle, but there’s the beginning of a rise. However, tomorrow morning is back on schedule and will mean getting up 2 hours earlier… so that should take care of itself. Yeah?
