That’ll be Plan B if further tweaking doesn’t work. The frustrating thing is that on my old basals, I’d pretty much nailed overnight settings. So putting those numbers in and running in Manual for a while makes sense.

Last night after the first low I switched to Activity mode for 6 hours. It kept me hovering around 9 or 10, but at least I didn’t have another night of successive lows.

Maybe I’m just an opposite kinda guy. Another example: most people experience “foot on the floor” syndrome. As soon as I get up, my BG plunges. (The cure for diabetes: stay in bed and never eat. Could go viral.)

I agree…but my interpretation of the insulin delivery history is the “normal basal” is calculated by the algorithm and constantly changing. The software does not differentiate between basal and mini-bolus in the history. So that IOB number reported by the Omnipod 5 makes no sense to me. That is because a user can’t go back into the history and differentiate between “normal basal” and “mini bolus”…only one number is reported every 5 minutes.

It’s a moot point for me anyway, I use Affrezza and/or syringe for about 75% of my meal bolus or corrections with no way to tell the Omnipod 5 about that insulin. The software is never able to include the “true” IOB in its calculations but the bolus calculator does include the “mystery IOB” from mini-bolusses.

My understanding is that the algorithm works off only the last 3 or 4 pods worth of info. I wouldn’t wait around for weeks with poor numbers expecting the algorithm to suddenly learn you.

The juice box podcast has several episodes on the Omnipod 5 algorithm. They explain pretty well. Also Loop and Learn did a couple of hour long YouTube videos with in depth explanations. I believe they’ve been linked to a few times in past discussions on FU.

I might not have explained my idea fully…the idea is to use manual mode with a good reliable basal program to have good BG numbers for 3-4 pods, so the algorithm can learn what the TDD was that gave you those good BG numbers.

Sorry if I misunderstood. The few weeks part of the comment was what I was taking issue with.

It doesn’t matter what your control looks like on the last 3 or 4 pods. Only TDD which you can manipulate on pod 1. I don’t see any reason to wait around with poor numbers.

I really haven’t seen it behave any differently in auto mode after running very different manual basals for weeks at a time. It’ll never give me more than about 30% of my TDD in basal while in auto mode, and my blood sugars are constantly spiking without explanation in auto mode, causing me to have to bolus more than I should. It’s just a pretty ineffective algorithm for some people it seems. I’m ordering the tandem mobi and hope to have better performance from it

I’ve also given up on Omnipod 5 Auto mode for day to day. I’m waiting for Sequel Twiist to be covered on Medicare and then I’ll make a change, figuring it will be easier to deal with the algorithm (reportedly from Loop). In the meantime, I’ve got my own fly by wire manual combo of pod basal, pod bolus, syringe and Afrezza that does an OK (but not stellar) job of BG control.

I definitely have a love/hate relationship with the algorithm. Love how safe it’s been(for me). Hate the fact that if I’m even a little resistant at night it will not keep me below 180 and I have to go into manual or wake up a couple of times a night and bolus.

I hope in the future they will allow a lower target BG which might help with this problem. Or something the exact opposite of activity mode. Like a - I’m going to need a LOT MORE Mode.

How does one actually reset the algorithm?

Iv read forms, asked AI and searched but can’t seem to find a step by step process on how to actually reset or start over with the algorithm.

Iv looked all over the menu settings; made sure my app was updated and nothing.

Or is it just deleting and reinstalling the app?

Could use some help please

People will say to do a factory reset or something like that which is somewhere in the settings.

The only thing I’ve found helpful in my own case is injecting a long acting dose of basal (tresiba in my case) to pick up some of the algorithms slack

Try this first because it may be faster. Long click on the app icon, a menu with “App info” will pop up. Select that and then click “Storage usage”. Click “clear cache” and then “clear data”; the latter will give an explanation/warning.

If that doesn’t work uninstall/reinstall will be required but that is a much longer process. Here is what I suggested but using xDrip+ as an example (since I don’t have an O5). _Do not do this with xDrip+ or AAPS; you will be sorry if you do._

The Reddit link is more informative about what is happening, according to that Reddit the pod stores accumulated data after 48 hours of use and this is used by the controller (app or Omnipod PDM) to set up the next pod.

That implies that if a pod is used for less than 48 hours it does not change the learned settings.
